They have them in suspension, and with their minds connected to a social simulation that represents the end of the twentieth century, Matrix. Humans are used by machines for energy, and the descendants of the few humans who did not fall within the networks of robots or have been released from Matrix, simulation, live in the city of Zion. From there, a small fleet of ships moving through the ground, entering in a clandestine manner to Matrix and trying to release more and more people connected, looking for those who sense that something is not right in the illusory world in which they live. Some of the captains of these ships, as Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), believe that there is someone in the Matrix that is the Chosen One, the person who would end the war with the machines according to an ancient prophecy. Morfeo is set at Neo (Keanu Reeves), a hacker who lives unknowingly trapped in the Matrix, believing he may be The One. Neo is freed thanks to the Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), a member of the crew of Morpheus, yet is haunted by a Matrix programs, staff, led by Smith (Hugo Weaving), who intend to access Zion's computers through the treachery of another subordinate of Morpheus, Cypher. The agents manage to capture Morpheus and Neo is forced to risk their lives to rescue him. At the end of the first film Neo is revealed as the Chosen One and ends with Smith.
