2. Enfermedad hemolítica
crónica, hereditaria y
familiar, que padecen casi
exclusivamente los sujetos de
raza negra.
Debe su nombre a que los
eritrocitos de estos pacientes
adoptan forma de hoz o
semiluna, con extremos
puntiagudos (Sicling), cuando
se les priva de Oxígeno.
La causa de esta anomalía es
la presencia de HbS, que
precipita fácilmente al estado
reducido.
Enfermedad Crónica, que
cursa con exacerbaciones y
remisiones temporarias.

Sickle cell disease refers not only to individuals with sickle cell anemia, but also to compound heterozygotes where one β-globin gene mutation includes the sickle cell mutation and the 2nd β-globin includes a gene mutation in the β-globin gene other than the sickle cell mutation, such as mutations associated with Hb C, Hb β-thalassemia, Hb D, and Hb O Arab. In sickle cell anemia, Hb S is commonly as high as 90% of the total hemoglobin. In sickle cell disease, Hb S is >50% of all hemoglobin.
