Protests began in Brazil in June 2013 as approximately one million Brazilians gathered in the streets. They were demonstrating against rising public transportation costs, decreasing quality and funding of hospitals and education due to money being invested in stadiums for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Areas known as favelas, where 6% of Brazil's population lives in poverty with low access to services and high violence, have been affected. The main reasons for the ongoing protests have been increased public transportation costs, lower education quality, and reduced hospital funding and quality of care.
