INTRODUCTION
A library is the store house of knowledge, the
flowing stream of living thoughts and an educational
apparatus of considerable value. This intellectual nerve centre
of the school is the hub of its academic life. It is one of the
most useful, stimulating and potent instruments of dynamic
developmental education in the school. It is the richest source
of experiences from which the teacher can choose at will, any
number of learning tasks appropriate to the student initiated
and activity centered style of pedagogy.
ORGANISATION OF LIBRARY
The school libraryis now regarded as a live
place humming with a activity. It is a place where pupils go,
not only for study but for enjoyment too. Work &play go side
by side in a typical progressive school library
Nowadays we are emphasizing‘education for
democrazy ’which in turn warrants’ democracy in education’.
Only a little is to be dictated by the teacher; the rest is to be

freely choosen by the pupil. Library is the agency for
experimentation in this ’education for democrazy‘and
‘education in democrazy’
From the beginning children need an environment
enriched by attractive books and it is one of the duties of the
school to see that this environment is provided. If a child’s
early experience with books are pleasurable, a sound
foundation is laid for their use in his future development,
because once the child has been taught to love and read
books with passion and they became the main source for
exploration of knowledge.
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF ORGANIZING A LIBRARY
To help teachers and pupils alike update new knowledge.
To facilitate self ‘studies’ and ‘learning to learn’.
To enrich curricular experiences.
To enable pupils participate in discussion and project
works meaningfully.
To develop the habit of concentrated reading of
knowledge books, with a purpose.

SCHOOL LIBRARY & CLASS LIBRARY
Books play vital role in our life. It is the most
adaptable invention for conveying knowledge. They are
the tools of learning and they act as the chain of
communication from the older generation to the young.
Books are considered to the object of art, which are
created through a process of writing, editing, printing,
and binding etc. They are the materials mean through
which the literature, ideas, view points, inventions,
incidents, experiences and knowledge etc are
transmitted to the society. Libraries are the agencies for
the acquisition, preservation, effective use and
dissemination of recorded knowledge and information
contained in other books and documents.
A library is an organized collection of sources of
information ad similar resources made accessible to a
defined community for reference or borrowing. It
provides physical or digital access to materials and may
be a physical building or a room; collection includes
books, periodicals, maps, manuscripts, films, CD’s,
documents etc. The school library is central to learning
and plays key role for encouraging innovation, curiosity
and problem solving. It is a catalyst for literacy and
reading and for teaching and scaffolding inquiry learning.

In some schools, a large library or media centre is not
available.
In these instances, a classroom library is the
only access that students have to the books and
resources they need. Class room libraries, while smaller
than school libraries, still have great benefits for
students. The books, magazines, resources etc are still at
the finger tips of the students all day long. The
convenience and accessibility of a calm library can’t be
beat. Another benefit is the flexibility of it use.
The books of the library should be selected with
reference to the vocational needs and recreational
interests of pupils. Reference books including
dictionaries and encyclopedia should be readily made
available for teachers and pupils. There should be a
liberal supply of current periodicals and news papers,
which would be useful to pupils and teachers. Also,
efficient running of a school library depends upon role of
librarian, teachers, location of library room and quality of
books.

MEASURES THAT WILL ENCOURAGE THE USE OF LIBRARY
AMONG PUPILS
Teacher should give occasional talks to pupils on
the importance of extra reading.
The open shelf system should be introduced so that
students may have free access to books.
Each student should be asked to maintain a library
note book in which he may enter data wise, the
name of all the books he has read.
Library periods should be provided for each class in
the time table.
A book lover’s club may be constituted, and the
student asked to give a short review of the
interesting stories or events read by them.

CONCLUSION
A good library is one “ that keeps books on every
subject – but only selected books ; where the librarian is true
devotee, devoid of ulterior seeking, from pride in the mere
loading of shelves, capable of discriminate rejection “ –
Tagore. So, a good library is an academic support in education
, and it is a well- disciplined concept for life also
