a digipak analysis of the indie band The 1975

1. The 1975 Digipak

2. Front cover
Following the
conventions of its
genre the front cover
is against black and
white however it is
darker than most
digipaks are. The
lighting on the front
cover is very eye-
catching as the bands
name is in lights and
glows around the box.
This is to grab the
audiences attention.
The white line around the box gives a
contrast to the background keeping the
box the focal point.
The font used on the album
has become distinctive
with the band and is very
simple making the band
recognisable and familiar.
Like a lot of indie bands the
band do not appear on the
front of the album as they
think something
simple/meaningful should be
used instead.
The font also has a
vintage feel to it
something many indie bands
associate themselves with
through clothing.

3. Once again the
distinctive font is
used on the CD this
time in black. This
doesn't stand out as
much as white would
but it could be
because the band want
the focus to be on the
front cover. The
repeat of the title
also adds a
continuation to the
album.

The CD itself is
black following
conventions.

4. Inside Cover
The inside of the
front cover holds
all the legal
information for
the album.
The bands name is repeated once again
in the same colour and style as the
front of the album. This shows
continuation throughout. Linking each
page to each other.
Although black identifies
with heavy metal/ Goth
genre this band surprises
its audiences with its
influence from the pop
genre.

5. Back of Album
The back of the digipak
keeps the black and
white theme. This keeps
a cool consistency all
the way through the
pack.
The back of the album
uses a different font
but still keeps the
white theme. This is
because this font
doesn’t need to stand
out as much as the
title and needs to be
easy to read.
The backs links directly with the front of the
album as it shows the back side of the box.
This could represent every thing else inside
the album being inside the box.
Like the front
the back of the
album is simple
linking with the
laid back feel of
the indie band
conventions.
This font is more modern
compared to the vintage style
logo possibly showing that their
music has some modern influences
to it.
The block capitals and two
line is something iconic
to the band and something
their fans can recognize
as this is they style the
band use on their social
media.
On the floor the
reflection of the
track listing can
be seen, this
detail adds to the
overall feel of
the album.

6. Inside fold out
The inside of the
album folds out to
show the band, this
picture is black and
white keeping with
the theme of its
genre and the album.
Although most indie
bands don’t feature
on their album as
they care more about
their music than
being recognized,
this is used on the
indie so new fans can
see the band and get
a feel for them.
Exciting fans could
also use this as a
poster.
The clothing sticks to theme of blacks and
whites and also matches the feel of an
indie band as its laid back and casual.
The location of
the photo is
plain and
simple and
looks as though
anyone could of
taken it, this
links in with
the overall
feel of the
pack and how
the band want
to be portrayed
to fans.
The posture of the band (not
looking, hands in pockets
etc.) appeals to their
target audience as male
students can relate to this.
