Monteiro Lobato was an influential Brazilian writer and editor born in 1882. He studied law but became interested in writing and publishing. Some of his most famous works included the children's book Sítio do Pica Pau Amarelo and the character Emília. He had a publishing company and translated many works. Lobato played a key role in developing Brazilian nationalism and literature in the early 20th century. He had 4 children with his wife and changed his name as a teenager.
