35. History: a stormy night,some shepherds
The Legend is that on
who took refuge in the current Cruz Of San
Gregorio,witnessed the fall of a stone from sky , with
the inscription JHS.Since then,the the poceños come
to that place, on Saturday before May 9th to venerate
this sacred stone.It goes on a piligrimage to the ‘’Child
of the Ball’’ and the ‘’Veracruz’’ accompanied by
floats,to celebrate mass.

55. The glass blowing tradition goes as far back as the
beggining of the 16th century.
Don Hernendo de Zafra built a glass factory in the
village. The area offered all the necesary raw materials,
wich were basically wood and silica. This factory was
closed in 1878.
The glass blown at the factory was mainly for
industrial and domestic purposes: Recipient, bottles,
carafes, etc. Decorative product were also made, some
even for luxury purposes, such as the jars of Castril.

Saramago has launched the Centro Andaluz del
Vidrio, CAV, with the aim of recovering this
handicraft tradition, This project encourages culture

The CAV makes use of different techniques of glass

was the one that had been used in the old times.
Other techniques are also used, such as the technique
of the Glass Welding Torch, used to make glass
sequences to be used in jewels, and the Technique of
Fusing, which consist of melting flat glass in electric
furnaces to obtain bright and colourful bowls, plates,
astrays and other decoratice items.
The CAV also has a workshop in Carmen St from
where you can purchase pieces of glass.
