Greenhouse gas emissions calculations with AMEE

  1. 1. Greenhouse gas emissions calculations with AMEE Dr Andrew Berkeley, Scientific Officer Dr Rebecca Smith, Scientific Officer
  2. 2.   Example: Combustion of diesel fuel 10 litres diesel -> 26.391 kg CO 2 20 litres diesel -> 52.782 kg CO 2 Diesel ‘emissions factor’: 2.6391 kg per litre Emissions kg =  Quantity litres x Emission factor kg per litre How are emissions calculated?
  3. 3. Activity quantities : representing some level of activity or ‘consumption’ e.g. fuel/electricity consumption, car mileage, industrial production * vary between each specific scenario Activity properties : universal information about activity e.g. fuel properties, vehicle fuel efficiency, chemical process data * do NOT vary between each specific scenario Emissions calculation components Activity quantities Activity properties Emissions calculation
  4. 4. AMEE AMEE aims to aggregate all of the data and calculation methodologies on the planet AMEE provides a platform for organising and storing activity data, and combining this data with the most appropriate methodologies for calculating their associated greenhouse gas emissions
  5. 5. How does AMEE work?
  6. 6. AMEE ‘categories’ Principal organisational unit in AMEE Represent collections of data around a common theme , e.g. ‘fuel combustion’, ‘electricity generation’,’transportation’,’waste’ Represent a single method of making emissions calculations Contain ‘data items’
  7. 7. AMEE ‘data items’ Basic unit of emissions data in AMEE Represents a specific instance of the category theme category: ‘fuel’ -> data items: ‘coal’, ‘diesel’, ‘gas’, ‘wood’ category: ‘car’ -> data items: ‘BMW 3 Series’,‘Ford Focus’, etc. Each data item contains specific data values required to represent the associated energy and emissions dynamics
  8. 8. An example
  9. 9. AMEE provides all necessary data and algorithms Category: /business/energy/electricity Calculation
  10. 10. Data item: country=Canada AMEE provides all necessary data and algorithms Category: /business/energy/electricity Calculation CO 2 emissions kg per kWh CH 4 emissions kg per kWh N 2 O emissions kg per kWh
  11. 11. Data item: country=Canada AMEE provides all necessary data and algorithms Category: /business/energy/electricity Calculation CO 2 emissions kg per kWh CH 4 emissions kg per kWh N 2 O emissions kg per kWh AMEE user provides activity data and receives emissions calculation Quantity of electricity consumed. e.g. 200 kWh
  12. 12. Data item: country=Canada AMEE provides all necessary data and algorithms Category: /business/energy/electricity Calculation CO 2 emissions kg per kWh CH 4 emissions kg per kWh N 2 O emissions kg per kWh AMEE user provides activity data and receives emissions calculation Quantity of electricity consumed. e.g. 200 kWh Emissions (kg)
