Presented at WordCamp Denver 2015 (#wcdenver).
Building skills isn't something that happens by accident. It happens by deliberate and intentional focus.

I eat books. If I’m not learning, I’m dying … and
reading books in particular (along with blogs) is the
best way to learn new stuff.
I post my reading list here:

I have a core library of actual books that cover a lot
of the high level education. Outside of that I’ll
typically turn to a combination of Google and
People I Know™ to find answers.

The first thing I do is try to do things on my own
without any instruction whatsoever. I do this on
purpose to fail [...] from there, I move to online
resources where people write tutorials. I’m able to
better understand them because they’re showing
me where my ways were wrong, and what I didn’t
understand (contextually) the first time.

I usually learn something new out of necessity. I
need to do something, I can’t, I learn. I’m very
haptic, though, so I learn by doing and breaking
and blowing up. I call it the Ms. Frizzle style
of learning...

Usually I keep a log of things I want to learn and
as resources float in front of me [...] I bookmark
them so that when I get a chunk of time to research
and learn a new thing, I have a backlog of
resources to pull from.

Believe it or not, I consult my Professional
WordPress books [...]. When I first started
WordPress development I frequently hung out in
the #wordpress IRC channel on freenode. Over time
I went from asking questions to answering them.
It was a great way to learn.
