MITOSIS! Thurs. Sept. 23, 2010
Review Mitosis has 4 stages: Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Mitosis is the process by which the nucleus of a cell divides into TWO IDENTICAL nuclei
Why is it important that the nucleus divides into IDENTICAL nuclei? Remember: the nucleus contains the genetic information GENES! (section of DNA) Genes are located on chromosomes, which are long linear strands of DNA So the cell has all the information it needs to create NEW cells!
On the back of your mitosis worksheet: PROPHASE METAPHASE ANAPHASE TELOPHASE
PROPHASE Chromosomes have made a copy (replicated) and are now visible
METAPHASE Replicated chromosomes line up in the centre of the cell
ANAPHASE The identical chromosomes separate and begin to move toward opposite ends of the cell
TELOPHASE Chromosomes are harder to see as a membrane forms around them Now what happens?
