HUMOR
• The quality of being amusing or comic,
especially as expressed in literature or speech.
• Humor is one instructional tool that teachers can
use in the classroom to increase their
effectiveness. (Melissa Wanzer)
TYPES OF HUMORS
•Humor can be of two types
•Good or Positive in use
• Jokes, Riddles, Puns, Funny stories, Humors Stories
•Bad or Negative in use
• Gender, Self Disparaging or student disparaging,
Jokes not related to subject or content, Physical or
vocal comedy, Ethnic, Sarcastic etc.
USE HUMOR POSITIVELY
• Humor is one type of immediacy behavior
• Teacher has to use subject or topic related humor
• Use humor where required includes; Cartoon, Pictures,
Videos, Funny recordings
• Use normal humor or joke in light manner
• Use smile, laugh, vocal variety, gesture as per situation
Use of Smile/Laugh in Classroom
DEVELOP TASTE OF HUMOR
• Give awareness and difference between types of Jokes
and its usage.
• Give assignment to bring a jokes.
• Ask student to build humor or jokes.
• Celebrate Joke of the day and give rewards on best joke
or humor.
CONT.
• Ask students to create funny things.
• Ask them to bring funny things, books, pictures,
poems etc. in class.
• Ask questions to them about Jokes, Fun, Humor etc.
• Develop interest, understanding and outcomes of
positive jokes.
OUTCOMES OF POSITIVE HUMOR
• Positive attitude of students towards studies and
each others.
• Increase participation in learning process.
• Increase motivation
• Strong Relationship between Teachers and students.
• Positive Learning environment.
• Work hard to learn subject matters.
OUTCOMES OF NEGATIVE HUMOR
• It could damage one’s credibility
• It can make negative impact on student mind
• Repeatedly putting own self down could damage
perception of teacher competence
• Student dislike those teachers who target them
• Increase conflict and tension in classroom
• Aggressiveness in students
TEACHER STUDENT RELATIONSHIP
• Teacher Likeness and dislikes
• Classroom environment calm and energetic
• Reduce Tension
• To alleviate boredom
• To relieve embarrassment
• Cooperation and strong bounding
HUMOR/JOKES IN A CLASSROOM
LIMITATIONS TO USE HUMOR
• Some researchers reluctant to recommend the use of
humor as an instructional tool.
• They used different tests to check the impact of humor
in classroom.
• Results shows that its impacts can be positive or
negative depend on the type of humor used, situation or
time of humor, level of class, related to topic or content,
etc.
CONT.
• They are in favor to use humor through audiotapes,
during lectures, video clips etc. but suggested many
points to consider.
• Did not perceive self-deprecating.
• Did not target or make fun of student or individuals.
• Avoid to use gender, culture, ethics, age related
topics in humor.
• Avoid to use too much humor.
ALWAYS REMEMBER
First create high level
creditability among students
than use self disparaging
humor in class otherwise
avoid to use it.
Don’t make a fun or be a
fun for others.

LIMITATIONS TO USE HUMOR • Some researchers reluctant to recommend the use of humor as an instructional tool. • They used different tests to check the impact of humor in classroom. • Results shows that its impacts can be positive or negative depend on the type of humor used, situation or time of humor, level of class, related to topic or content, etc.

CONT. • They are in favor to use humor through audiotapes, during lectures, video clips etc. but suggested many points to consider. • Did not perceive self-deprecating. • Did not target or make fun of student or individuals. • Avoid to use gender, culture, ethics, age related topics in humor. • Avoid to use too much humor.
  • 16. ALWAYS REMEMBER First create high level creditability among students than use self disparaging humor in class otherwise avoid to use it. Don’t make a fun or be a fun for others.
