Civic Participation and Voting
  Rights in Athens and U.S.

United States
U.S. citizens 18 years and older can vote.
You have to be a u.s. citizen to become
president, and at least 35 years of age.
The president chooses the vice president to
help him.
The president can only serve two terms.
If you are born in a different country you can
run for governor.
Every few years people vote for congress men.
Presidents or candidates campaigns have to be
successful to win the election.
In 1776 only people that owned land could
vote.
14th Amendment granted former slaves
citizenship.
The 19th Amendment passed letting women
vote in state and federal elections.
The 26th Amendment lowered the voting age
from 21 to 18.
North Carolina was the last state to let people
that didn't own land vote.
Only 6% of the population could vote when
George Washington became president
Athens
● Athens was a democracy, the first of its
  kind in the world as far as we know.
with all free males being eligible to
participate in the government of the city.
● Women were not able to vote or
  participate in government and upper class.
● Athenian women were expected to stay at
  home and spin and weave and supervise the
  children.
● Only male citizens, age 20 and up who have
  finished their military services can be apart
  of government.
● Women slaves and immigrants were not
  allowed to vote in ancient Athens.
● Women were not allowed to vote because
  they weren't considered citizens.
● Women in the classical period, especially
  those of the upper middle class and
  aristocracy were not even allowed to leave
  home without escort and were confined in
  Their home.
● One female did become an office holder in
  the golden age (450 B.C.)
● Slaves and foreigners living in Athens were
  banned from participating in government.
● The idea of democracy started in Athens,
  Greece in about 400-300 B.C.
● In Athens women had no power, Could not
  even own properties.
● In Athens only free male native born
  Athens could vote, In Sparta only males that
  had graduated from the agoge (school)
  could vote.
● Athenian women were not able to cry at all.
Comparing U.S. and Athens
ßoth the u.s. and Athens had to live in the
country to vote
ßoth had restrictions to vote at one time
In u.s. you have to be 18 or older , in Athens
only land owning men could vote
500 names were picked to see who runs the
laws
ßoth gathered to discuss laws
united states is 1200 times larger than Athens
Athens did not let women vote
In Athens not all religions were allowed.
U.S. Isn't a democracy its a federal
constitutional republic.
Athens government is more advanced.
USA's government is a constitutional republic.
Athens government has 2 bodies (executive
and legislative)
U.S. has 3 bodies (legislative,Executive and
Judicial.)
Question:
Cleisthenes invented democracy because he
was tired of being told what to do by the
ruler. he came up with a system that land
owning men got one vote on whatever they
were voting about.They had meetings when
everyone got together that were called
assemblies.They randomly picked 500 men
that were paid to be there every day.
