Ik ga snel en ingewikkeld. Onderbreek me wanneer je wilt.\n
Wat ga ik bespreken?\n
cartografie en big data, post digitale praktijk\n\nprogrammeur, ontwerpen aangeleerd\nhttp://monsterswell.com\n
we landscape silence\n
we map discontent\n

This is not me, but some fat dude on Flickr (though of course you only have my word for that): \n\nA bunch of grownups who are sensorizing their lives and measuring everything EVERYTHING to be able to spend their time and energy better.\n\nCrash course in quantification.\n\nphoto: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nettsu/4785047145/\n
On the one hand everything’s going to be crammed full with sensors. ‘Volgesensord’, Terrific Sensorification\n\naudio, movement, orientation, video, RFID, IR, etc.\n\nPersonal: everything you can cram into a cell phone\nDe-personalized: cc-tv, car/cycle-loops, transit gates\n\nphoto: http://www.flickr.com/photos/flag75/2382433582/in/photostream/\n
Many of these sensors are personal and embedded in our most personal devices.\n
It has been personalized and expanded on by devices such as the Fitbit that monitor you in realtime and give you statistics about what your body is doing.\n\nTo the recently announced Body Area Network. Where your bladder can signal it’s full to your cell phone which will automatically enable the nearest urinal Layar.\n
This is my personal map of Amsterdam. I can see where I’ve been regularly and what my friends’ preferences are. This uses Foursquare for the location data, but that could be Facebook or Hyves or any other social checkin service.\n\nThe act of checking in creates a personal, local and global taste map of the area. All these checkins in aggregate give you views of the area. Enable you to create personalized maps.\n
Chromaroma, your ambient actions are a game for you and your team, but top down game level controls can influence overall transit behaviour. Snakes and Ladders for public transportation.\nhttp://vimeo.com/10017464\n

Hoe zichtbaar? Hoe test je dit?\n
The Dutch version of Mint, Yunoo enables you to more clearly scan your finances and get an overview where your money goes.\n
“For the exogenously extended organizational complex functioning as an integrated homeostatic system unconsciously, we propose the term “cyborg”.” - Manfred Clynes & Nathan Kline\n\nOr our own data and technology will enable us to more effectively and with more flow navigate through a hostile information landscape. Like the cyborg in this picture.\n\nThe truth of the matter is that we are all cyborgs. We have almost always been augmented by technology and media to be more than we are and to thrive there where we otherwise wouldn’t in often hostile environments (for various definitions of hostile).\n\nThe increase in data and intelligence (this communion with the cloud) could help us to further become what we already are: better cyborgs. Not in the pie in the sky way, but in the every day way we already are augmented by technology to make our lives easier and more fulfilling.\n\nBut for that to happen we have to be aware and engage in active choice about the design future that data holds for us.\n\nReading: #50cyborgs\n\nphoto: http://www.flickr.com/photos/webwizzard/3931165028/\n
Slide from Niels: http://nielsthooft.com/3-thoughts-about-kinect\n
But many others are all around us with their own sensor fields and connections to each other and the network, permeating everywhere through our lives without us even knowing it.\n\nVideo by Timo Arnall: http://vimeo.com/3684601\n
technical dimension: sensors\nexperience dimension: ambience\nmobile dimensions: mobiles and sensors and various networks, beyond mobile, everyware (re: Adam Greenfield)\nsoft issue: ethics\n\nWhat creates the data? What is it about? Is it about you or about other people? Who mandated the creation of data? To what ends? Is the data created consciously or not? Do the subjects opt in? Does everything create data or will we stop certain things from doing that (a data moratorium in certain fields)?\n\nOnce the genie is out of the bottle. There’s no putting it back. Now would be a good question to ask ourselves what we would like to record.\n
technical dimension: storage and management\nexperience dimension: control and privacy\nmobile dimension: local or cloud\nsoft issue: control, politics\n\nWho controls the data about you? You may have created it yourself with a personal device but it still may have gone into the cloud. Somebody else, a corporation, an institution or government may have (probably does have) created data. Do you even know it’s there? Are you aware at any level?\nCan we get at it? Is it open? Is it privacy sensitive? Who controls access now and in the future? How long will it be stored? Will it be copied and replicated?\n
technical: processing and application\nexperience: context and relevance\nmobile: break out of screens, mobile\nsoft issue: design, epistemology\n\nWho/what uses it? Why? Who understands it? Who knows how to best employ it? What were the design decisions and values underlying that usage? What are the assumptions? What happens when it breaks down?\nWho commissions its usage and to what ends? What kind of stories are formed around the data? Is any one of them truth or anywhere near a reasonable facsimile of truth?\n\nComplicated questions.\n\nProgression from mainframes to cellphones, to the fabric of society: From board rooms and business analysis, to policy makers and planning (cybernetics), to everyday life, to help people optimize their lives, to help our environment to take care of us.\n
OODA Loop, iteratief proces\n
Verbaas me.\n\nWe all have to become data visualizers. Both to increase basic literacy in the material, but also because making is one of the best ways of controlling technology development. In these technocratic times, making something is a political act in and of itself and the best thing that conscious citizens can do. Creating faits accomplis shape our thinking about of possible futures.\nAs Bill Buxton says: The only way to bring about the future tomorrow is to live in it today.\n\nThere are tons of tools out there to enable you to build your own. From scratch, Excel, SPSS, Tableau, to Google Charting, Impure (Bestiario): http://infosthetics.com/archives/2010/10/impure_a_new_visualization_programming_language_for_non-programmers.html\n\nI believe there is great value in creating situated solutions for groups of people, but there is no denying that there is a massive opportunity in creating mass market solutions (for random definitions of ‘mass’ and ‘market’).\n\nThanks @moleitau, for a Zeitgeist\n
\n

Interesting to see what others are doing but also: good designers are always wanted in this field. Programmers cannot do it alone.\n
