What is the difference between digital and analogue
TV?
Television has been around since the 1920s in more or less the
same format until recently. With the introduction of digital TV,
television as we have always known it has been transformed with
better picture and sound quality as well as access to a wider range
of free to air channels.
If you haven’t yet made the switch to digital TV you will need to
get a digital TV antenna at some point. Why? Analogue TV is
gradually being phased out and will eventually be switched off.
What is so great about digital TV?
Analogue TV uses radio frequencies to broadcast its signal, which
leaves it open to interference from other sources. The signal is
also variable in quality depending on how close your TV antenna is
to the source of the signal.
Digital TV is different in that it is transmitted much like internet
data, in small pieces of information. Rather than having varying
strengths of signal, the signal is either there or not, leading to an
all or nothing result and a much more consistent quality of picture
PDFmyURL.com
all or nothing result and a much more consistent quality of picture
and sound.
Due to the way it is transmitted, analogue TV takes up a large
amount of bandwidth, which does not leave space for many
channels, or additional features. Digital TV uses smaller segments
of bandwidth, which means it can transmit higher quality pictures
and sound and there is also additional space for features including
surround sound, text services and multiple languages. Within the
set bandwidth for each TV station there is room for a larger
number of channels, meaning more variety for digital TV viewers.
How can I get digital TV?
Traditional analogue TVs aren’t able to read digital signals. If you
want to get digital TV you will need to get a TV with a built in
digital TV tuner, get a set top box or a digital TV recorder.
Depending on your location you may also need an antenna amplifier
or an antenna booster to help improve the signal to your TV. The
right digital antenna system for you will depend on the type of
building you are in, your location and your budget.
If your digital TV reception is bad you will end up with a pixelated
effect so it is important that you get the best digital TV antenna for
your needs.
At New Image Antennas we are happy to assist you with any
questions about changing from analogue to digital TV and we can
help you find the best antenna for your requirements. Call us on

What is the best television antenna to buy?
Over the next few years, digital TV is being introduced in Australia.
As analogue transmission is phased out, it will be replaced by
digital transmissions, which offer superior sound and picture
reception, as well as new features like widescreen and high
definition television.

If you want to receive free to air TV when your area switches over
to digital transmissions, you will need to have equipment capable of
receiving digital TV signals. That equipment is a digital television
antenna installed.
You don’t have to wait until analogue TV is switched off in your area
to start watching digital TV, as many digital TV channels have been
launched and are currently broadcasting.
How to receive digital TV, today
There are two ways of receiving digital TV: by installing a set top
box or personal video recorder on your analogue TV set, or by
upgrading to a TV set with a built-in digital tuner. An aerial
installation technician will be able help you to decide which of these
options is best for your circumstances. A television antenna
technician can also provide guidance and advice on the selection
and installation of a digital antenna that will give you the best
quality TV picture.
Your old television antenna may provide adequate sound and
picture quality, but the best way to experience all of the benefits
of the new digital TV transmission services is to install a new
digital antenna.
Selecting the right television antenna
Selecting the type of television antenna that will give you the best
TV picture and sound reception requires technical knowhow and
experience. Many factors are likely to affect digital TV reception,
including the strength of signals, the type of digital signals
available, weather patterns, and buildings and features of the
terrain that block signals and degrade picture quality.
Signal levels at your site must be accurately measured to allow the
correct television antenna type to be chosen. Having chosen the
type of antenna, decisions need to be made about its positioning
and orientation, and about the type of cables, connectors and other
components.
Selecting and installing a television antenna are complex tasks that

What does a digital antenna actually do?
Have you ever wondered what happens when a free to air TV
program is broadcast? Your digital antenna is one of the key
components that make your evening entertainment possible.
It all starts with a signal
Let’s put it as simply and briefly as possible. Video and audio
signals are created in the television studio. A transmitter
modulates the video and audio signals into one signal and sends it
over the airwaves. Your television antenna picks up these signals,
which then travel along a cable to your TV set. From there they are
translated into the video signals that are seen on the television
set’s screen and the audio signals that are heard through its
speakers.
Your digital antenna interprets those signals
A typical digital antenna consists of a several pairs of aluminium
rods on a central metal boom. The rods are of different lengths,
and the length of a rod is related to the frequency of TV signals it
receives.
The actual television antenna is a relatively simple device when
compared with other high-tech components of your TV set-up.
Although technically uncomplicated, the antenna installation is
highly sensitive. Everything has to be spot-on if you want crystal-
clear pictures and perfect sound. Your television reception will be
PDFmyURL.com
clear pictures and perfect sound. Your television reception will be
less than perfect if the antenna’s gain, direction, bandwidth and
height haven’t been installed at their optimum settings.
Low gain VS higher gain antennas
The gain of a digital antenna is a measure of its capability to
receive signals. Generally speaking, if you are close to a
transmitter and the signal is strong, a low gain antenna is needed,
and if you are far from the transmitter and the signal is weak, a
higher gain antenna is required.
A digital antenna’s bandwidth indicates the frequency bands that it
is able to receive. A digital antenna has to be designed to receive
frequencies that match the digital services that are transmitted in
the area.
Point and shoot
Your digital antenna should point towards the direction from which
the TV signal is transmitted. When a transmission tower is close
enough to be seen, it’s easy to adjust the antenna’s direction, but
adjustment can be problematic when transmission towers are far
away.
The height at which your aerial installation should be mounted
depends on how far it is from the origin of the TV signal - the
greater the distance, the higher the television antenna needs to be
mounted.
The approach of Australia’s digital switchover – the transition from
analogue to digital TV – means that you will have access to a wider
range of TV channels and can expect high standards of audio and
video quality. More than ever before, the quality of the television
programs you view will depend on the digital antenna you choose,
and the aerial installation.

installation, call us on 1800 351 121.

Revealed: Will a digital TV antenna improve TV reception?
We rely on television f or education, inf ormation and amusement. Poor TV reception is annoying
and inconvenient, and if the quality of your TV picture is bad, you’ll be keen to have the cause
diagnosed and treated quickly.
Diagnosing poor TV reception
As you can imagine, diagnosing the cause of bad TV reception is a complex task. If you are having
television reception dif f iculties, it’s important to call on the services of a technician who has
training and experience in TV troubleshooting and problem solving.
The three main causes of bad television reception are distance f rom the transmitter, obstruction
of signals, and poor antenna quality, and improving reception may involve adjusting your existing
antenna, or upgrading to a new digital TV antenna.
Distance
Television signals become weaker when you are f urther away f rom the broadcasting tower.
Distance f rom the transmitter af f ects analogue and digital television reception dif f erently; while
the picture may become snowy with analogue TV, with digital TV, the picture can break up or f ail
altogether.
Signal obstruction
Obstacles in the nearby environment can obstruct TV signals and cause poor reception. Buildings
and hills can block signals, and electrical apparatus can cause interf erence, especially if you rely
on an indoor TV antenna. Weather conditions can also af f ect TV reception.
Antenna quality
A TV antenna attached to the roof of your house is exposed to the elements, and over time may
lose its ability to receive signals transmitted f rom the broadcasting tower. In addition, an old
antenna may not be the most suitable f or receiving digital television transmission.
Having diagnosed the cause of poor reception, an antenna installation technician can advise you
on ways to improve the picture quality. You may need to simply adjusting the position of your TV
antenna, or a technician may suggest using an antenna booster or antenna amplif ier to improve
signal quality. Alternatively, you may need a digital TV antenna.
Digital TV antennas
Digital TV technology is being introduced in Australia because it is considered to be superior to the
current analogue TV transmissions, and of f ers benef its including improved picture and sound
quality. A switch to digital is going to be necessary f or everyone eventually but upgrading to a
good quality digital TV antenna you means you start accessing improved picture quality today. If
it’s time call in the prof essionals f or your digital antenna installation, call us on 1800 351 121.

Digital antenna installation: What you need to know!
Around Australia, analogue TV services are being progressively switched over to digital TV signals.
PDFmyURL.com
If you aren’t “digital ready”, it’s probably time to consider digital antenna installation so that you
can experience all the benef its that digital TV of f ers.
You have two options if you want to get f ree to air digital TV: using a set top box or personal video
recorder that converts your existing analogue TV set into a digital TV, or replacing your analogue TV
set with a set that has an inbuilt digital tuner.
You might f ind your existing TV antenna is suitable f or receiving digital transmissions, or you
might need to upgrade to a digital TV antenna to get decent reception. Many people see the
switch f rom analogue to digital TV as an opportunity to replace an old aerial installation with the
latest digital antenna system.
There are a number of steps when it comes digital antenna installation.
Work out what digital TV antenna system provides the best reception f or your situation,
including the building, its geographic location and the type of TV set you use.
Fit the digital TV antenna on the roof .
Run cabling between the antenna and the interior of the building.
Test the aerial installation to make sure that it works as it should.
Thinking about a DIY antenna installation?
If you are considering taking on the job on a new digital antenna installation, rather than getting
an antenna technician in, you need to be aware of some of the DIY pitf alls you may f ace.
You will need to spend a considerable amount of time on research bef ore you identif y the
digital antenna system that’s best f or your situation.
You will need access to some specialised equipment so that you can get up to the roof and
work there saf ely.
Testing and troubleshooting could be time-consuming and f rustrating.
There’s a risk of damaging roof coverings and internal surf aces as you work on the roof and
run cables through your property.
If you are not conf ident that you have the experience and skills to choose an appropriate digital
antenna system and install it saf ely, it’s best to have a digital antenna installation technician
undertake the work. An antenna installation technician has the training, experience and
equipment needed to do a saf e, prof essional installation job.

The digital TV switchover isn't f ar away
On 10th December 2013
Melbourne will say goodbye to analogue and hello to digital. That’s less than 18 months away!
There’s been lot’s of new aerial installations perf ormed all over Australia because a lot of
Australian homes had ancient aerials and needed to improve their signal. Luckily a new digital
antenna isn’t always required. But the only way to really know Is to try to get a digital signal and
see what you can see.
Have you gotten a digital TV yet? No major drama’s if you haven’t. You’ve got 18 months bef ore the
switchover when old TVs will go black f orever (unless you at least grab yourself a digital settop
box).
PDFmyURL.com
But since we love our TV shows we couldn’t imagine not having access to digital now.
Have you thought about what you’re missing out on right now? As it turns out, quite a lot (if you’re
a TV f an like we are).
There are so many great TV shows that our traditional 5 channels just don’t have the time to air.
We love the choice having 15 channels gives us, that’s right... 15 channels of programming to
choose f rom! And you don’t even need to pay f or a subscription.
Here are the extra channels currently on of f er:
ABC2 & ABC2 - For pre-schoolers f rom 6am – 7pm every day and af ter 7pm they provide adult
programming including comedy, drama and docos.
ABC3 A commercial-f ree, dedicated kids channel especially f or 6-12 year olds.
ABC News 24 Of f ers 24 hour, commercial-f ree national and global breaking news.
SBS TWO Some of the world’s best stories, f ilm and docos f rom Oz and around the world.
7TWO The very best of British television, comedies and movies.
7mate First-run comedies, reality and movies f or the guys.
GO! An entertainment channel f or the young (and young at heart).
GEM A general entertainment and movie channel.
ONE Premium sport, f actual programs and movies plus action and adventure.
ELEVEN A premium entertainment channel f or the distinctly youthf ul.
So if you can at least spring $50 f or a digital set top box we heartily recommend getting one f rom
your local electrical store. Don’t worry there’s a good chance you wont need a new aerial
installation f or a digital antenna but it’s better to know now rather than be lef t with dead air in 18
months time!

What happens to my old TV when digital takes over?
PDFmyURL.com
It depends. Do you have a digital set top box? If your TV can connect to a digital set top box or a
digital TV recorder then you can use your old TV f or as long as you like.
Have you thought about your TV aerial? If you’re lucky you wont need a digital TV aerial installation ,
as your old one should hopef ully do the trick. But of course, if in doubt give us a quick call and we
can have a look f or you.
If your TV is so old it doesn’t have typical connections on the back then you might as well put it out
in the next hard rubbish pick-up because once we reach the digital switchover (Dec 2013) that’s
the end of your old TV giving you anything except white noise.
If your old TV can be hooked up to typical DVD players and the like then it should be f ine to connect
to a digital set top box.
A standard def inition (SD) set-top box will probably cost between $30 and $75. If you have a high
def inition (HD) TV then you’d be better of f getting a HD set top box. But if you don’t have HD then
save your hard-earned money as it won’t help you get a better picture!
If you have a little more budget to play with, we suggest you invest in a TV recorder with built in
digital receiver. That way you can record hundreds of hours of programming that you can watch at
your leisure. Once you get all the digital channels you might need to do a f air bit of recording to
keep up with all the great shows on digital TV!

Questions to ask so you get a f air deal f rom an ‘antenna man’
<=">
PDFmyURL.com
As we get closer to the big digital TV switchover there will be more and
more ‘antenna men’ knocking on your door wanting to carry out a digital
antenna installation f or you.
But wait! Bef ore you hand-over your hard-earned cash you need to ask some important questions
f irst. Who are they? Are they qualif ied? How long have they been in business? Are they part of the
Government approved Antenna Installer Endorsement Scheme? What kind of antenna are they
selling me? What will the antenna and installation cost me? What guarantees do I have?
We thought we’d take a moment to answer these questions f or you. Please make sure if you’re
considering anyone f or a digital antenna installation that you ask these same questions. Once you
have the f ull inf ormation you can make up your own mind who can help you get a quality picture at
an af f ordable price.
18 years and still going strong!
- Are we part of the Government approved Antenna Installer Endorsement Scheme?
Yes! The scheme is voluntary f or antenna installers, and in order to become an endorsed installer
they must be assessed in working saf ely, coaxial cabling, installing antennas and antenna
installing equipment. As an endorsed antenna installer, installers are required to meet minimum
standards including:
- at least one year’s experience as an installer
- have and know how to use digital signal measurement equipment
- have minimum public liability insurance of $5 million
We consider this to be the very minimum standard you should expect f rom a TV antenna installer.
So if the company approaching you doesn’t have an endorsement, maybe
you should look elsewhere.
- What kind of antenna are we offering?
Unlike some smaller operators we have a large range of antennas
available that will suit your particular need, big or small. We use
antennas of the highest quality, but most importantly we also make sure
that the complete antenna system, including all equipment and cabling
is the best quality, giving you the best possible TV picture. That’s where
PDFmyURL.com
some operators try to cut costs hoping you’ll never notice. We’ve always
believed in the best quality at the best price, that’s why we still have a
good name 18 years on!
- What does a digital TV antenna and installation cost?
Our high-quality digital antennas start from $120 including installation.
And as we already mentioned, we make sure you get the best quality
cabling as well.
- What guarantees do we offer?
All of our antennas have a lifetime guarantee. And unlike some new
operators we’ve already got an 18 year track record, so you can be
assured we aren’t fly-by-nighters. We’ll be around long after the digital
switchover has passed us all by.
We believe we are Melbourne’s best antenna installation company.
Speak to us on 1800 351 121 and we think you’ll agree!

Why is Australia going digital?
PDFmyURL.com
It’s a little bit like keeping up with the Joneses. We have to keep up
with what’s happening overseas. But there is a more practical reason
too. More and more overseas programs are being produced in the digital
format only — so going digital means that Australians won’t miss out on
all the great new TV programs being made.
Also, when the analogue signal is finally all turned off, the government
plans to use that free space for other services for the community.
- OK so I get access to new programs, what else?
There are more options with digital TV services, these include:
• more channels to view through ‘Freeview’
• access to the new digital channels through some subscription TV
providers
• the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service for regional
areas.
- What is Freeview?
Freeview is an industry body responsible for promoting the free-to-air
digital TV service in Australia. It comprises of all the free-to-air
broadcasters including ABC, SBS, Seven Network, Nine Network, Network
PDFmyURL.com
Ten, Southern Cross, Prime and the WIN Network.
Together they offer 16 digital channels, including ABC1, ABC2, ABC3, ABC
News 24, SBS ONE, SBS TWO, SBS HD, Seven, 7TWO, 7mate, GO!, GEM,
TEN, ONE and ELEVEN.
- How do I get all these free channels?
To receive all the Freeview channels in your area, you’ll need a good
television antenna, a high definition (HD) digital TV that has a built-in digital
receiver, or a HD TV plus a digital ‘set-top box’.
- How do I know if my TV has a built in digital tuner?
Can you receive ABC2 or SBS TWO? If you can see these channels, then
you are already watching digital TV and you don’t need to change or
upgrade.
- Do I really need to buy a new TV?
No, most analog TVs will be able to receive digital TV by connecting a
digital set-top box or digital TV recorder. So unless your analog TV is too
old to be connected to a set-top box or digital TV recorder (and that
would be REALLY old), it won’t need replacing. So it shouldn’t cost you
much at all to get access to digital TV.
However, just remember that if your TV isn’t high definition you won’t be
able to watch the high definition (HD) channels. But it’s only a few
channels right now so it isn’t too much of a problem. Later on, when you
are ready, you can always buy a new HD TV that has an integrated digital
TV tuner.
PDFmyURL.com
The first and most important step is that you have a digital set-top box
and, if your picture quality is bad, you might need to get an antenna booster
or, you might need a full digital TV antenna installation so you can receive the
digital signal loud and clear.
If you have any questions, we’d be happy to talk to you about your most
affordable options.

Thousands Of North Queensland Complain About Bad Digital TV
Reception
An old or incorrectly placed television antenna is one of the reasons nearly
5000 North Queenslanders have lodged calls to the Digital Switchover
Taskforce. One in five complaining about picture freeze, no sound and
blue screens.
PDFmyURL.com
Weather can be a factor with both analogue or digital TV reception, and
North Queensland certainly gets it fair share of bad weather. However, if
the skies are clear and they’ve still got a frozen screen then chances are
high their antenna just isn’t up to snuff.
"People may also want to check their antenna and cabling are in good
working order. A faulty or incorrectly placed antenna can cause
reception issues, like pixellation or `blue screen' when the signal cannot
be received,'' a Taskforce spokeswoman said.
Down here in Melbourne we also get our fair share of bad weather, but
unless it’s torrential rain with thick cloud cover the weather shouldn’t
stop you watching your favourite programs. So the Taskforce’s advice to
check the quality and positioning of your antenna and cabling is relevant
to us ‘southerners’ too.
So, here is a good way to know what the problem is: if you’ve gotten a
nice new digital television and the weather is perfect outside but you’re
still having picture problems, don’t blame the signal… blame the
antenna.
Now one thing we would recommend here are New Image Antennas is
not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Digital is coming whether
we like it or not. There’s a few fixes for your antenna problems though.
You might just need an antenna amplif ier; Your existing aerial might need
realignment; or, if your antenna is more than 10 years old you will likely
be best served by having a new digital TV antenna installation .
Don’t worry, even if you do need a new antenna, an aerial installation doesn’t
have to cost the earth. We have 18 year’s experience in giving you the
most cost effective solution for your reception problems. Call us on

How do I know if I have a digital TV?
An easy way to tell if you are watching digital TV, is whether you can
receive ABC2, ABC3 or GO. These are all standard definition digital
channels, so if you can view them (and you don’t have subscription TV
like Foxtel), it means your TV is capable of receiving digital TV.
If you’re lucky enough to already have a digital TV, there’s one more
question you should ask: How good is my reception?
Your existing television antenna may be able to receive digital TV without
any problem. However our experience tells us that most people have
antennas that are old, broken or are simply not suitable for getting
quality Digital TV reception.
We all remember the fuzzy images our analogue TV gets when reception
gets bad. However with digital, the signal is often all or nothing. It’s
either perfect or it’s pixelated (that’s means little coloured squares on
your screen) or there’s no signal at all.
If you get the occasional pixilation and no signal message that probably
means your antenna either isn’t positioned correctly or it needs
replacing. If it’s been quite a few years since your antenna was installed
and you’re experiencing these problems we would suggest it’s time to

Antenna Installation f or your digital TV may seem "old school" to some, however, a growing number
of customers who know better are f inding this to be necessary in getting the best experience f rom
their digital TVs.
The slow but sure switch to digital TV broadcasting has eliminated most annoying picture
distortions what we consider as snow or ghosting. This technology allows the TV reception to have
the best quality, and if the highest quality isn't achieve, it will not display anything at all. With
digital TV signals you will see either a crisp, ghost-f ree picture or no picture at all.
Since a lot of local and syndicated programming has not yet been crossed over to high-def inition,
it is typical f or local stations to broadcast their digital signals in standard-def inition during the
day, then switch to f ull widescreen HDTV during primetime.
Below are some of the basic but crucial guidelines you should know when you are considering
digital antenna installation:
Consider Using Outdoor Antennas
Indoor digital antennas are small antennas designed to be placed on top of or near your TV.
Outdoor digital antennas on the other hand tend to be signif icantly larger and are intended f or
roof - or attic-mounting. Generally science would tell us that the larger an antenna's surf ace area
is, the stronger the signal it will provide. The relative strength of the signal an outdoor antenna is
much more ef f ective than an indoor one. Indoor antennas would usually just enhance the
f unctionality of your digital TV, but outdoor antennas will usually make a dif f erence in quality.
Almost all outdoor antennas will perf orm better than even the best indoor antennas. Indoor
antennas will usually be adversely af f ected by the walls of a house and even by movement of
people in the room. Other household appliances such as f luorescent lights, computers and
cordless phones will also pose as interf erence f or an indoor antenna to be used to its f ullest
PDFmyURL.com
cordless phones will also pose as interf erence f or an indoor antenna to be used to its f ullest
potential. Saf ety and ergonomics is another possible concern f or indoor antennas.
Outdoor antenna installation although obviously would take more time than simply plugging in
your indoor antenna, provides you with a sure and saf e way to receive the best signal f or your TV.
Consider Using Amplif ied Antennas
The best way to maximise your antenna installation is to make the most out of the signal your
antenna is gathering. A good way to help antennas overcome size or height disadvantages is
through the use of electronic amplif ication. Electronic amplif ication would also enhance the
signal to your television. Most amplif iers can be built in, or it can be a separate device that installs
in-line between the antenna and TV. Having an amplif ier to supplement your antenna installation
ensures that you have the top technology to receive the best signal f or your digital TV.
These are just basic inf ormation that you should know regarding antenna installation. These
however provide the necessary steps in helping you decide on crucial procedures to complete your
digital viewing experience.

there physical barriers
There are a host of other things to consider, as well as considering installaiton health and

Finding a Great Tradie
Tue, 13 Sep 2011 06:22:00 +0000 - We're all busy living our lives day to day. So when we
need some help f rom a tradesman to get something done around the house, and we havn't
got the time to go through the yellow pages and phone 3 dif f erent businesses, how can we
quickly f ind a RELIABLE tradie?
PDFmyURL.com
One of the best way is to use Google. Obvious of course, but I'm not just talking about the
search engine, what I really mean is Google Places. You probably havn't paid much attention
to the results you get when your type "electrician cranbourne".
But if you take a closer look at the types of results you get, it can actually save you time
f inding the right tradie f or you, and get you one that comes highly recommended too!
At the top and side, you'll see businesses who are advertising on Google. These guys have
services that match exactly what you're looking f or. Below that you'll then get a mix of
general listings, Google Places results, video, images etc etc.
By clicking on the Google Places heading or map that appears on the right hand side, you'll
uncover a wealth of additional inf ormation that will help you quickly and easily f ind the right
tradie f or you.
For example, you'll see where they're located, a phone number & what other customers have
thought of their service. And this is where the gold is. Because we're so busy, no longer do
many of us talk to the neighbours in our street about a recommendation f or a tradie. Now
we can go online and review the ratings on Google Places, and quickly f ind the right tradie
f or your needs.
Find out more about Google Places http://www.google.com/places/
How Smart is Your TV?
Tue, 13 Sep 2011 05:07:00 +0000 - TV's used to be simple things. Kind of like a f ish bowl
sitting in a box, showing 4 channels and a couple of other ones that were usually covered in
snow.
If you wanted to watch a dif f erent channel, you had to physically get out of the chair, turn a
dial (did that thing inspire the ipod I wonder?) and f ind that channel you were looking f or.
Now? Well, its so much easier. For starters, there's man's new best f riend, the remote. And
there's widescreen TV, surely the best thing to happen to the lounge since...well nothing
really. On top of that we've got 3DTV, HD, cable TV, digital and the list goes on.
For those that love their computers as much as their TV's, you can put the two together and
get the perf ect marriage of internet and TV. Except that doing this bit can be pretty techy,
and in spite of Apple's best intentions, its not always straight f orward.
So now the big TV brands have invented a new kind of TV, the smart TV. It can do all of the
usual cutting edge TV tricks that we've come to expect - HD, widescreen, remote etc. But
now they've managed to squeeze in the internet as well. All out of the one box!
What do you get when you buy a smart TV. Basically its the best bits of the internet. You get
a bunch of TV "apps", streamed content, web browsing, games and internet TV. Inernet TV is
just TV content sent to your TV via the internet.
PDFmyURL.com
Why bother? Well, we used to have 4 channels. Then with cable it went to 50+ and digital TV
added a f ew more. Now with the internet plugged in at the back, there's pretty much no limit
- only the amount of time you have on the couch!
Stat - more than 24 hours of video are uploaded onto YouTube every minute!
If you need any help getting the best picture on your new smart TV, give us a call! Our
experienced team will be only too happy to help with the right solution.
Its Footy Finals Time!
Tue, 13 Sep 2011 03:51:00 +0000 - How quickly f ooty f inals roll around. This time its not the
one day in September, but the one day in October. Or if you're a f an of one or the other rugb
codes, there's 3 big f inals to get excited about.
Aside f rom the AFL grand f inal, (does anyone think Collingwood will lose?) we've got the NRL
(go Storm boys!) and the Rugby World Cup. (Wallabies anyone?)
As Roy & HG once said, too much sport is barely enough!
Smart retailers know where most men will want to be come f inals time - parked in f ront of
the largest screen possible with their beverage of choice.
So to help them in their quest f or f ootball glory, September (and this year it's October too)
all the big names will be of f ering great deals on the lates and greatest, all with the aim of
making that win (or loss) so much more enjoyable.
A quick scan online can help narrow down the options in terms of the model, size and
f eatures. Then get ready to do some serious bargaining, just make sure you can get your new
baby delivered bef ore The Big Day!
And if you need some help getting the best picture, give us a call, we can take care of all your
antenna installation needs. Just make sure you get in early, we're expecting to be very busy!

Hang on to Your Antenna - Its Winter
Wed, 06 Jul 2011 11:59:00 +0000 - So f ar winter in Melbourne has given us the variety only a
Melbourne winter can. We started of f with some f airly cold weather, with the opening of the
ski season in early June blessed with plenty of the white stuf f . Then we had quite a mild
stint, with some beautif ul sunny and (relatively) mild days.
This week, however, the thermometer has headed south. Rain, wind and no sun means that
we're all shivering and doing our best to keep warm. It's during these cold blasts, when
scurry inside af ter work and school to keep warm and snug inside and sit back and watch
some comf ort TV - like Masterchef or the the f ooty.
Something not many of us think about, when we're trying to ignore the wind howling outside,
is weather the antenna that's perched on the roof is going to make it through the cold
blasts coming our way. Its the unsung hero of our cold winter evenings, standing outside in
the wind and the rain, on top of the roof , doing its job without complaint.
That is, unless its getting a bit long in the tooth. Or it wasn't f itted properly in the f irst
place. Or the wiring is a bit dodgy. Then you might no be quite so warm and snug. You might
in f act be quite grumpy. There's nothing worse than sitting down of an evening to relax and
instead of it snowing (well in Melbourne its more likely to be rain or hail) outside, you f ind
that there's snow on your TV! Disaster!
What to do? Well, to make sure your winter evenings don't suf f er this f ate, and you think your
antenna might be on the wrong side of its usef ul lif e, then it might pay to get a prof essional
antenna installer in to give it a health check.
A prof essional installer will be able to give your antenna system a once over, and make sure
everything's in shape f rom top to bottom. If you've recently upgrade your home TV system,

everything's in shape f rom top to bottom. If you've recently upgrade your home TV system,
then it might also be the perf ect time to have your TV antenna system replaced with state
of the art equipment that will do justice to your TV system.
Once you've had your antenna system checked out, you can sit back, let winter do its worst
and be warm and comf ortable in the knowledge that your antenna won't let you down.
Antenna Installation f or Your New House
Thu, 16 Jun 2011 12:23:00 +0000 - Are you lucky enough to be building your dream home?
Have you thought about making sure you've got the best TV reception, especially if your
house has a home cinema.
As part of the joy, hard work and sometimes f rustration of building your new home, its
important to consider where and how many TV antenna points you'll have around the house.
Like to watch Kochi in the morning? Then you'll need a TV antenna point in the kitchen. Kids
like to watch their own shows? Then you'll need TV points in the bedrooms. Like to have an
early night and watch some TV in bed? Then you'll need a TV antenna point in your bedroom
too.
PDFmyURL.com
If you've considered all these details in building your home, then well done!
If not, then we at New Image Antennas can certainly help. Using our expertise and
knowledge, we can provide straight f orward advice on what you need when it comes to
getting a great picture, no matter where you are in your home.
Once you've got your antenna points sorted, then the other thing to consider to make sure
you get a great picture on your TV is your antenna. It is possible to install a new antenna
yourself , provided you have the right equipment and are able to access your new home site in

Have You Considered a 3D TV?
Thu, 16 Jun 2011 11:58:00 +0000 -
3D TV is here. In the past f ew years, we've seen the rise of 3D movies, with the likes of Avatar and a
host of kids movies that have reinvented the whole 3D experience. Remember Jaws 3D? Well 3D has
f inally arrived, and the experience is amazing.
PDFmyURL.com
But what about 3D TV?
On the back of the success of 3D movies, and also the f act that most consumers have upgraded to a
widescreen TV, manuf acturers have been looking f or the "next big thing". And they're betting on 3D
TV. Imagine, that f antastic 3D experience right in your own home!
So now 3D TV's are in your local store, but are we buying them? It seems that no one is really buying a
3D f or the 3D experience alone. Rather, we're buying them in the hope that we're f uture proof ing our
TV, but it seems that we're not really using the 3D side of things all that much.
The main reason is that there isn't that much to watch that's actually broadcast in 3D. What we'd
really like to watch is movies and live sport in 3D, how amazing would that be? But unf ortunately
there's just not much viewing available to encourage us to put on our glasses. At the moment its
pretty much limited to cartoons.
As a result of t he less t han ent husiast ic t akeup of 3D TV's, manuf act urers are looking t o ot her
t echnologies t o drive new sales. This includes "smart TV's" t hat look t o include int ernet cont ent ,
such as You Tube, Twit t er f eeds and ot her social net working sit es. Will t his be t he next big t hing in
TV's?
Only t ime will t ell. Oh and by t he way, don't right of f 3D TV's eit her. I st ill want t o wat ch t he f oot y in
3D, someday!

Federal Government Announces Digital TV Assistance
Mon, 30 May 2011 10:53:00 +0000 - A f ew days ago, the Minister f or Broadband,
Communications and Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy provided an update on the
government's household assistance scheme. The scheme was announced to help people in

The aim of the scheme is to help householders switch to digital TV. In the 2011/12 f ederal

Recycling Your Old TV
Wed, 20 Apr 2011 14 :51:00 +0000 -
As more and more people switch over to digital TV by upgrading from their existing
TV, the next question to aks is, "What do I do with my old TV?"
Well, if you live in the Albury region, one solution, as reported by the ABC Murray
Goulburn, is to take your old box to to the Albury-based recycling workshop. Here,
Kalianna, a not-for-profit organisation that supports people with a disability, will pull
apart a range of electronics including TV's for a second life.
Employees at Kalianna recycle copper wiring, cent ral processing unit s (CPU's), mot herboards and most met als
f rom t elevisions and comput ers.
The ABC report quotes Kalianna's supervisor, Ross Weeding: "People deliver their
TV's to us and then the employees pull them to pieces, out of that we are able to
recycle the wiring and everything else inside the television apart from the screens.
"Because of the heavy metals that are in the screens; led and mercury, we are unable
to do anything with them here so we send them off to South Australia where they are
recycled."
As there is a cost to send the screens over to South Australia for processing, you're
charged a small fee of $10 to handover for TV's and $6 for computers. Not much really
when you consider the benefits to the environment, and all money earned from
recycling goes back into running the workshop.
"If you can get a tonne of CPU's that is worth $70,000, but you need a lot to make a
tonne. That money is reinvested back into the workshop and we try to better the
workshop and conditions for everybody here."
What a great way to manage the huge numbers of TV's we all see lying on nature
strips. Reduces the amount of landfill, provides employment and income and
minimises our impact on the environment.

  • 1. New Image Antennas Blog 13th Feb, 2013 What is the difference between digital and analogue TV? Television has been around since the 1920s in more or less the same format until recently. With the introduction of digital TV, television as we have always known it has been transformed with better picture and sound quality as well as access to a wider range of free to air channels. If you haven’t yet made the switch to digital TV you will need to get a digital TV antenna at some point. Why? Analogue TV is gradually being phased out and will eventually be switched off. What is so great about digital TV? Analogue TV uses radio frequencies to broadcast its signal, which leaves it open to interference from other sources. The signal is also variable in quality depending on how close your TV antenna is to the source of the signal. Digital TV is different in that it is transmitted much like internet data, in small pieces of information. Rather than having varying strengths of signal, the signal is either there or not, leading to an all or nothing result and a much more consistent quality of picture PDFmyURL.com
  • 2. all or nothing result and a much more consistent quality of picture and sound. Due to the way it is transmitted, analogue TV takes up a large amount of bandwidth, which does not leave space for many channels, or additional features. Digital TV uses smaller segments of bandwidth, which means it can transmit higher quality pictures and sound and there is also additional space for features including surround sound, text services and multiple languages. Within the set bandwidth for each TV station there is room for a larger number of channels, meaning more variety for digital TV viewers. How can I get digital TV? Traditional analogue TVs aren’t able to read digital signals. If you want to get digital TV you will need to get a TV with a built in digital TV tuner, get a set top box or a digital TV recorder. Depending on your location you may also need an antenna amplifier or an antenna booster to help improve the signal to your TV. The right digital antenna system for you will depend on the type of building you are in, your location and your budget. If your digital TV reception is bad you will end up with a pixelated effect so it is important that you get the best digital TV antenna for your needs. At New Image Antennas we are happy to assist you with any questions about changing from analogue to digital TV and we can help you find the best antenna for your requirements. Call us on 1800 351 121. AUSTRALIA DAY BLOG Jan 26th, 2013 What is the best television antenna to buy? Over the next few years, digital TV is being introduced in Australia. As analogue transmission is phased out, it will be replaced by digital transmissions, which offer superior sound and picture reception, as well as new features like widescreen and high definition television. • 3. If you want to receive free to air TV when your area switches over to digital transmissions, you will need to have equipment capable of receiving digital TV signals. That equipment is a digital television antenna installed. You don’t have to wait until analogue TV is switched off in your area to start watching digital TV, as many digital TV channels have been launched and are currently broadcasting. How to receive digital TV, today There are two ways of receiving digital TV: by installing a set top box or personal video recorder on your analogue TV set, or by upgrading to a TV set with a built-in digital tuner. An aerial installation technician will be able help you to decide which of these options is best for your circumstances. A television antenna technician can also provide guidance and advice on the selection and installation of a digital antenna that will give you the best quality TV picture. Your old television antenna may provide adequate sound and picture quality, but the best way to experience all of the benefits of the new digital TV transmission services is to install a new digital antenna. Selecting the right television antenna Selecting the type of television antenna that will give you the best TV picture and sound reception requires technical knowhow and experience. Many factors are likely to affect digital TV reception, including the strength of signals, the type of digital signals available, weather patterns, and buildings and features of the terrain that block signals and degrade picture quality. Signal levels at your site must be accurately measured to allow the correct television antenna type to be chosen. Having chosen the type of antenna, decisions need to be made about its positioning and orientation, and about the type of cables, connectors and other components. • 4. Selecting and installing a television antenna are complex tasks that call for specialised skills, experience and equipment. To be sure of choosing a digital television antenna that will deliver the best digital TV experience, take the advice of a skilled, endorsed antenna installation technician. If it’s time call in the professionals for your digital antenna installation, call us on 1800 351 121. Dec 2012 What does a digital antenna actually do? Have you ever wondered what happens when a free to air TV program is broadcast? Your digital antenna is one of the key components that make your evening entertainment possible. It all starts with a signal Let’s put it as simply and briefly as possible. Video and audio signals are created in the television studio. A transmitter modulates the video and audio signals into one signal and sends it over the airwaves. Your television antenna picks up these signals, which then travel along a cable to your TV set. From there they are translated into the video signals that are seen on the television set’s screen and the audio signals that are heard through its speakers. Your digital antenna interprets those signals A typical digital antenna consists of a several pairs of aluminium rods on a central metal boom. The rods are of different lengths, and the length of a rod is related to the frequency of TV signals it receives. The actual television antenna is a relatively simple device when compared with other high-tech components of your TV set-up. Although technically uncomplicated, the antenna installation is highly sensitive. Everything has to be spot-on if you want crystal- clear pictures and perfect sound. Your television reception will be PDFmyURL.com
  • 5. clear pictures and perfect sound. Your television reception will be less than perfect if the antenna’s gain, direction, bandwidth and height haven’t been installed at their optimum settings. Low gain VS higher gain antennas The gain of a digital antenna is a measure of its capability to receive signals. Generally speaking, if you are close to a transmitter and the signal is strong, a low gain antenna is needed, and if you are far from the transmitter and the signal is weak, a higher gain antenna is required. A digital antenna’s bandwidth indicates the frequency bands that it is able to receive. A digital antenna has to be designed to receive frequencies that match the digital services that are transmitted in the area. Point and shoot Your digital antenna should point towards the direction from which the TV signal is transmitted. When a transmission tower is close enough to be seen, it’s easy to adjust the antenna’s direction, but adjustment can be problematic when transmission towers are far away. The height at which your aerial installation should be mounted depends on how far it is from the origin of the TV signal - the greater the distance, the higher the television antenna needs to be mounted. The approach of Australia’s digital switchover – the transition from analogue to digital TV – means that you will have access to a wider range of TV channels and can expect high standards of audio and video quality. More than ever before, the quality of the television programs you view will depend on the digital antenna you choose, and the aerial installation. If it’s time call in the professionals for your digital antenna installation, call us on 1800 351 121. Thurs, 8 Nov 2012 PDFmyURL.com
  • 6. Revealed: Will a digital TV antenna improve TV reception? We rely on television f or education, inf ormation and amusement. Poor TV reception is annoying and inconvenient, and if the quality of your TV picture is bad, you’ll be keen to have the cause diagnosed and treated quickly. Diagnosing poor TV reception As you can imagine, diagnosing the cause of bad TV reception is a complex task. If you are having television reception dif f iculties, it’s important to call on the services of a technician who has training and experience in TV troubleshooting and problem solving. The three main causes of bad television reception are distance f rom the transmitter, obstruction of signals, and poor antenna quality, and improving reception may involve adjusting your existing antenna, or upgrading to a new digital TV antenna. Distance Television signals become weaker when you are f urther away f rom the broadcasting tower. Distance f rom the transmitter af f ects analogue and digital television reception dif f erently; while the picture may become snowy with analogue TV, with digital TV, the picture can break up or f ail altogether. Signal obstruction Obstacles in the nearby environment can obstruct TV signals and cause poor reception. Buildings and hills can block signals, and electrical apparatus can cause interf erence, especially if you rely on an indoor TV antenna. Weather conditions can also af f ect TV reception. Antenna quality A TV antenna attached to the roof of your house is exposed to the elements, and over time may lose its ability to receive signals transmitted f rom the broadcasting tower. In addition, an old antenna may not be the most suitable f or receiving digital television transmission. Having diagnosed the cause of poor reception, an antenna installation technician can advise you on ways to improve the picture quality. You may need to simply adjusting the position of your TV antenna, or a technician may suggest using an antenna booster or antenna amplif ier to improve signal quality. Alternatively, you may need a digital TV antenna. Digital TV antennas Digital TV technology is being introduced in Australia because it is considered to be superior to the current analogue TV transmissions, and of f ers benef its including improved picture and sound quality. A switch to digital is going to be necessary f or everyone eventually but upgrading to a good quality digital TV antenna you means you start accessing improved picture quality today. If it’s time call in the prof essionals f or your digital antenna installation, call us on 1800 351 121. Fri, 12 Oct 2012 Digital antenna installation: What you need to know! Around Australia, analogue TV services are being progressively switched over to digital TV signals. PDFmyURL.com

You have two options if you want to get f ree to air digital TV: using a set top box or personal video recorder that converts your existing analogue TV set into a digital TV, or replacing your analogue TV set with a set that has an inbuilt digital tuner. You might f ind your existing TV antenna is suitable f or receiving digital transmissions, or you might need to upgrade to a digital TV antenna to get decent reception. Many people see the switch f rom analogue to digital TV as an opportunity to replace an old aerial installation with the latest digital antenna system. There are a number of steps when it comes digital antenna installation. Work out what digital TV antenna system provides the best reception f or your situation, including the building, its geographic location and the type of TV set you use. • 10. But since we love our TV shows we couldn’t imagine not having access to digital now. Have you thought about what you’re missing out on right now? As it turns out, quite a lot (if you’re a TV f an like we are). There are so many great TV shows that our traditional 5 channels just don’t have the time to air. We love the choice having 15 channels gives us, that’s right... 15 channels of programming to choose f rom! And you don’t even need to pay f or a subscription. Here are the extra channels currently on of f er: ABC2 & ABC2 - For pre-schoolers f rom 6am – 7pm every day and af ter 7pm they provide adult programming including comedy, drama and docos. Don’t worry there’s a good chance you wont need a new aerial installation f or a digital antenna but it’s better to know now rather than be lef t with dead air in 18 months time! • 11. It depends. Do you have a digital set top box? If your TV can connect to a digital set top box or a digital TV recorder then you can use your old TV f or as long as you like. Have you thought about your TV aerial? If you’re lucky you wont need a digital TV aerial installation , as your old one should hopef ully do the trick. But of course, if in doubt give us a quick call and we can have a look f or you. If your TV is so old it doesn’t have typical connections on the back then you might as well put it out in the next hard rubbish pick-up because once we reach the digital switchover (Dec 2013) that’s the end of your old TV giving you anything except white noise. If your old TV can be hooked up to typical DVD players and the like then it should be f ine to connect to a digital set top box. A standard def inition (SD) set-top box will probably cost between $30 and $75. If you have a high def inition (HD) TV then you’d be better of f getting a HD set top box. But if you don’t have HD then save your hard-earned money as it won’t help you get a better picture! If you have a little more budget to play with, we suggest you invest in a TV recorder with built in digital receiver. That way you can record hundreds of hours of programming that you can watch at your leisure. Once you get all the digital channels you might need to do a f air bit of recording to keep up with all the great shows on digital TV! Bef ore you hand-over your hard-earned cash you need to ask some important questions f irst. Who are they? Are they qualif ied? How long have they been in business? Are they part of the Government approved Antenna Installer Endorsement Scheme? What kind of antenna are they selling me? What will the antenna and installation cost me? What guarantees do I have? We thought we’d take a moment to answer these questions f or you. Please make sure if you’re considering anyone f or a digital antenna installation that you ask these same questions. Once you have the f ull inf ormation you can make up your own mind who can help you get a quality picture at an af f ordable price. 18 years and still going strong! - Are we part of the Government approved Antenna Installer Endorsement Scheme? Yes! The scheme is voluntary f or antenna installers, and in order to become an endorsed installer they must be assessed in working saf ely, coaxial cabling, installing antennas and antenna installing equipment. As an endorsed antenna installer, installers are required to meet minimum standards including: - at least one year’s experience as an installer - have and know how to use digital signal measurement equipment - have minimum public liability insurance of $5 million We consider this to be the very minimum standard you should expect f rom a TV antenna installer. So if the company approaching you doesn’t have an endorsement, maybe you should look elsewhere. - What kind of antenna are we offering? Unlike some smaller operators we have a large range of antennas available that will suit your particular need, big or small. We use antennas of the highest quality, but most importantly we also make sure that the complete antenna system, including all equipment and cabling is the best quality, giving you the best possible TV picture. Thu, 10 May 2012 Why is Australia going digital? PDFmyURL.com
  • 14. It’s a little bit like keeping up with the Joneses. We have to keep up with what’s happening overseas. But there is a more practical reason too. More and more overseas programs are being produced in the digital format only — so going digital means that Australians won’t miss out on all the great new TV programs being made. Also, when the analogue signal is finally all turned off, the government plans to use that free space for other services for the community. - OK so I get access to new programs, what else? There are more options with digital TV services, these include: • more channels to view through ‘Freeview’ • access to the new digital channels through some subscription TV providers • the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service for regional areas. - What is Freeview? Freeview is an industry body responsible for promoting the free-to-air digital TV service in Australia. It comprises of all the free-to-air broadcasters including ABC, SBS, Seven Network, Nine Network, Network PDFmyURL.com
  • 15. Ten, Southern Cross, Prime and the WIN Network. Together they offer 16 digital channels, including ABC1, ABC2, ABC3, ABC News 24, SBS ONE, SBS TWO, SBS HD, Seven, 7TWO, 7mate, GO!, GEM, TEN, ONE and ELEVEN. - How do I get all these free channels? To receive all the Freeview channels in your area, you’ll need a good television antenna, a high definition (HD) digital TV that has a built-in digital receiver, or a HD TV plus a digital ‘set-top box’. - How do I know if my TV has a built in digital tuner? Can you receive ABC2 or SBS TWO? If you can see these channels, then you are already watching digital TV and you don’t need to change or upgrade. - Do I really need to buy a new TV? No, most analog TVs will be able to receive digital TV by connecting a digital set-top box or digital TV recorder. So unless your analog TV is too old to be connected to a set-top box or digital TV recorder (and that would be REALLY old), it won’t need replacing. So it shouldn’t cost you much at all to get access to digital TV. However, just remember that if your TV isn’t high definition you won’t be able to watch the high definition (HD) channels. But it’s only a few channels right now so it isn’t too much of a problem. Later on, when you are ready, you can always buy a new HD TV that has an integrated digital TV tuner. PDFmyURL.com
  • 16. The first and most important step is that you have a digital set-top box and, if your picture quality is bad, you might need to get an antenna booster or, you might need a full digital TV antenna installation so you can receive the digital signal loud and clear. If you have any questions, we’d be happy to talk to you about your most affordable options. Thu, 12 Apr 2012 Thousands Of North Queensland Complain About Bad Digital TV Reception An old or incorrectly placed television antenna is one of the reasons nearly 5000 North Queenslanders have lodged calls to the Digital Switchover Taskforce. One in five complaining about picture freeze, no sound and blue screens. PDFmyURL.com
  • 17. Weather can be a factor with both analogue or digital TV reception, and North Queensland certainly gets it fair share of bad weather. However, if the skies are clear and they’ve still got a frozen screen then chances are high their antenna just isn’t up to snuff. "People may also want to check their antenna and cabling are in good working order. A faulty or incorrectly placed antenna can cause reception issues, like pixellation or `blue screen' when the signal cannot be received,'' a Taskforce spokeswoman said. Down here in Melbourne we also get our fair share of bad weather, but unless it’s torrential rain with thick cloud cover the weather shouldn’t stop you watching your favourite programs. So the Taskforce’s advice to check the quality and positioning of your antenna and cabling is relevant to us ‘southerners’ too. So, here is a good way to know what the problem is: if you’ve gotten a nice new digital television and the weather is perfect outside but you’re still having picture problems, don’t blame the signal… blame the antenna. Now one thing we would recommend here are New Image Antennas is not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Digital is coming whether we like it or not. There’s a few fixes for your antenna problems though. You might just need an antenna amplif ier; Your existing aerial might need realignment; or, if your antenna is more than 10 years old you will likely be best served by having a new digital TV antenna installation . Don’t worry, even if you do need a new antenna, an aerial installation doesn’t have to cost the earth. An easy way to tell if you are watching digital TV, is whether you can receive ABC2, ABC3 or GO. These are all standard definition digital channels, so if you can view them (and you don’t have subscription TV like Foxtel), it means your TV is capable of receiving digital TV. If you’re lucky enough to already have a digital TV, there’s one more question you should ask: How good is my reception? Your existing television antenna may be able to receive digital TV without any problem. However our experience tells us that most people have antennas that are old, broken or are simply not suitable for getting quality Digital TV reception. We all remember the fuzzy images our analogue TV gets when reception gets bad. However with digital, the signal is often all or nothing. It’s either perfect or it’s pixelated (that’s means little coloured squares on your screen) or there’s no signal at all. If you get the occasional pixilation and no signal message that probably means your antenna either isn’t positioned correctly or it needs replacing. If it’s been quite a few years since your antenna was installed and you’re experiencing these problems we would suggest it’s time to PDFmyURL.com

  • 23. Antenna Installation f or your digital TV may seem "old school" to some, however, a growing number of customers who know better are f inding this to be necessary in getting the best experience f rom their digital TVs. The slow but sure switch to digital TV broadcasting has eliminated most annoying picture distortions what we consider as snow or ghosting. This technology allows the TV reception to have the best quality, and if the highest quality isn't achieve, it will not display anything at all. With digital TV signals you will see either a crisp, ghost-f ree picture or no picture at all. Since a lot of local and syndicated programming has not yet been crossed over to high-def inition, it is typical f or local stations to broadcast their digital signals in standard-def inition during the day, then switch to f ull widescreen HDTV during primetime. Below are some of the basic but crucial guidelines you should know when you are considering digital antenna installation: Consider Using Outdoor Antennas Indoor digital antennas are small antennas designed to be placed on top of or near your TV. Outdoor digital antennas on the other hand tend to be signif icantly larger and are intended f or roof - or attic-mounting. Generally science would tell us that the larger an antenna's surf ace area is, the stronger the signal it will provide. The relative strength of the signal an outdoor antenna is much more ef f ective than an indoor one. Indoor antennas would usually just enhance the f unctionality of your digital TV, but outdoor antennas will usually make a dif f erence in quality. Almost all outdoor antennas will perf orm better than even the best indoor antennas. Indoor antennas will usually be adversely af f ected by the walls of a house and even by movement of people in the room. Other household appliances such as f luorescent lights, computers and cordless phones will also pose as interf erence f or an indoor antenna to be used to its f ullest PDFmyURL.com
  • 24. cordless phones will also pose as interf erence f or an indoor antenna to be used to its f ullest potential. Saf ety and ergonomics is another possible concern f or indoor antennas. Outdoor antenna installation although obviously would take more time than simply plugging in your indoor antenna, provides you with a sure and saf e way to receive the best signal f or your TV. Consider Using Amplif ied Antennas The best way to maximise your antenna installation is to make the most out of the signal your antenna is gathering. A good way to help antennas overcome size or height disadvantages is through the use of electronic amplif ication. Electronic amplif ication would also enhance the signal to your television. Most amplif iers can be built in, or it can be a separate device that installs in-line between the antenna and TV. Having an amplif ier to supplement your antenna installation ensures that you have the top technology to receive the best signal f or your digital TV. These are just basic inf ormation that you should know regarding antenna installation. These however provide the necessary steps in helping you decide on crucial procedures to complete your digital viewing experience. Tue, 13 Sep 2011 05:07:00 +0000 - TV's used to be simple things. Kind of like a f ish bowl sitting in a box, showing 4 channels and a couple of other ones that were usually covered in snow. We started of f with some f airly cold weather, with the opening of the ski season in early June blessed with plenty of the white stuf f . Then we had quite a mild stint, with some beautif ul sunny and (relatively) mild days. This week, however, the thermometer has headed south. Its the unsung hero of our cold winter evenings, standing outside in the wind and the rain, on top of the roof , doing its job without complaint. That is, unless its getting a bit long in the tooth. Or it wasn't f itted properly in the f irst place. Or the wiring is a bit dodgy. Then you might no be quite so warm and snug. You might in f act be quite grumpy. There's nothing worse than sitting down of an evening to relax and instead of it snowing (well in Melbourne its more likely to be rain or hail) outside, you f ind that there's snow on your TV! • 47. Recycling Your Old TV Wed, 20 Apr 2011 14 :51:00 +0000 - As more and more people switch over to digital TV by upgrading from their existing TV, the next question to aks is, "What do I do with my old TV?" Well, if you live in the Albury region, one solution, as reported by the ABC Murray Goulburn, is to take your old box to to the Albury-based recycling workshop. Here, Kalianna, a not-for-profit organisation that supports people with a disability, will pull apart a range of electronics including TV's for a second life. Employees at Kalianna recycle copper wiring, cent ral processing unit s (CPU's), mot herboards and most met als f rom t elevisions and comput ers. The ABC report quotes Kalianna's supervisor, Ross Weeding: "People deliver their TV's to us and then the employees pull them to pieces, out of that we are able to recycle the wiring and everything else inside the television apart from the screens. "Because of the heavy metals that are in the screens; led and mercury, we are unable to do anything with them here so we send them off to South Australia where they are recycled." As there is a cost to send the screens over to South Australia for processing, you're charged a small fee of $10 to handover for TV's and $6 for computers. Not much really when you consider the benefits to the environment, and all money earned from recycling goes back into running the workshop. "If you can get a tonne of CPU's that is worth $70,000, but you need a lot to make a tonne. That money is reinvested back into the workshop and we try to better the workshop and conditions for everybody here." What a great way to manage the huge numbers of TV's we all see lying on nature strips. Reduces the amount of landfill, provides employment and income and minimises our impact on the environment.
