5. When my husband I got married in 2007 it not only meant
the union of our lives it also meant the union of our
furniture and belongings. When we merged our lives
together, under our first home, the result wasn't pretty.
Mismatched furniture, black leather couches (that were
promptly sold on Craigslist), and lots of family hand-me-
down pieces filled the empty rooms of our new home.
Before the days of blogging and Pinterest I perused a few
woodworking stores, got inspired by the TLC television
show Trading Spaces, and talked to the not-so-helpful
guys who worked behind the paint counter at the
hardware store, I finally worked up enough courage to
paint my first piece of furniture.
I sanded, primed, distressed, sponged, layered paint,
and sealed our dining room table and four chairs. When
my project was complete I felt the process left a lot to be
desired in terms of fun. I kept thinking- there has to be a
better way!
I prodded for answer by asking woodworking
professionals, antique restoration experts, carpenters,
contractors, faux finishers, authors of books, and anyone
who would listens. I

INTRODUCTION
6. I quickly found that there are two
types of people – those who are
willing to lend their expertise to help –
and then those who are closed off
and unwilling to share any “trade
secrets” to a fledgling little DIYer
eager for advice.
Soon my creative hobby of refunking
junk had turned into teaching monthly
furniture painting workshops and
writing a creative blog.
After years of trial and error painting
my own furniture I was passionate
about showing others that anyone,
even a corporate banker of 14 years
like myself, could create beautiful and
custom looking furniture for a fraction
of the cost.

After teaching more than 600 students in my furniture painting classes and reaching over 4 million page views on
my blog I wanted to give you the gift of being a lazy girl - 115 tricks of the trade I have learned over the years to
make my furniture painting process enjoyable, easy, and stress-free. Out of my frustration and search for the “right
way” to paint furniture I found the most imperfect, cost effective, and flexible methods to save me time, money, and
headaches in the process. This book is for you – the beginner and the pro- who want to find joy in painting
furniture. The Lazy Girl way.
8. HOW DO I
PAINT
FURNITURE?
7
Whoops! You bought the wrong book. This
book is not a how-to-paint-furniture guide.
There are tons of great books on the market that
will teach you how to paint furniture but this is
not one of them. This is a guide to helping you
save time, money, and your sanity through
quick to implement furniture painting tips and
tricks. The Lazy Girl’s Guide is for beginners
and advanced painters alike. There is no
experience needed to use the knowledge in this
book.

I notice that you sell
Heirloom Traditions
Paint & Miss Mus-
tard Seed's Milk
Paint. Are these tips
only applicable to
projects where those
brands are used?
WHAT TYPE
OF PAINT
DO I USE?
No, I am a firm believer in using what you already have! I sell those
brands because I think they are some of the best paint available for
furniture painters. This book can be used with any brand, in any color,
made by anyone. Feel free to use whatever paint you prefer. At times I
will mention a specific brand name, for example: FrogTape, because I
think that brand is the most reliable when it comes to painter's tapes. I
only recommend what I believe will make you successful in tackling your
own projects but feel free to swap out any brand you prefer.

HOW WILL I USE 115 TIPS,
TRICKS, & SHORTCUTS
ON EVERY PROJECT?
You won't. My goal is you take away a few
tips that will save you time and money on
each and every project. Money saved and a
few less Advil taken is a win in my book.
12. “IF IT’S NOT FUN YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG.”
GEORGE DI CARLO
There might be many reasons why you are painting
furniture. You may want to paint furniture to save money
on decorating your home. You may want to earn extra
money by starting a side hustle business flipping
furniture. Or you may be completely frustrated by the
whole process – hence why you bought this book.
The main reason why I paint furniture is because it is fun!
Keep these fundamentals in mind while you are working
on your project. Half of the creative battle is a good
attitude!
