• The black tapes -
http://theblacktapespodcast.com/?offset=1441746399343
– The black tapes are a fictional, horror, investigative journalism podcast. Anyone
connected with the show is going to tell you weather its fictional or not due to the
intentional blurring of the truth however the characters are defiantly fictional. It takes
you through a story that interviews different people including ghost hunters about
paranormal life in a documentary style. They always come back to the main character
acted as a narrator to explain what is happening visually.
– The black tapes use little amounts of sound effects. They use different background
noises to portray where abouts the characters are (outdoors = distant motorway) as
well as different microphones to show the characters situation ( press conference =
loud echo microphone, phone call = record through phone). All microphones are high
quality. The tone of the podcast obviously builds tensions throughout each episode
because they are talking about a horror discussion but it also builds tension in the
way you feel like a character will suddenly break or start shouting. The music behind it
plays a key role in this. They have happy (or happier) music for when they want to
stop the story and separate it and tension building music for when they are creating
suspense.
– I quiet like the documentary style and the way the story is presented so depending on
my story, I will try familiarise myself with more of there stories and include the tone in
my own work. I might do this by using music like they do or even changing different
microphone settings. The only think I would ask to improve is more background nose
to explain there surrounding

• Ambient worlds – Hogwarts potions class
– The ambient worlds are content creators that create nostalgic atmospheres of
some of the most iconic fictional worlds. You can relax. Sleep or studying while
listening to there pieces.
– The different elements of the music behind it (strong violin, flute and trumpet)
and sound effects gives the audience a feeling of nostalgia oof wating the films
and creates images for the listeners.
– The sound effects as we as the music s the key thing that give that nostalgic
feeling.
Some sound effects include:
• Potions boiling
• Fire crackling
• Doors closing
– The music is changes the whole product to the piece. That is what differentiates
and determines that is harry potter but the sound effects give it that realistic
effect of imagines your there.
– I think that the creators know what they want to do for there content so the only
improvement that I would ask for would be a more variety of sound effects.

• Pages folding

6. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• When having to research York ghost and horror stories, I found it
hard to find a story that I thought was realistic which made me
uninterested with the project. I learned that we were doing audio
and had to create an audio assessment to tell a chosen York ghost
story. The initial thought was what can I do with story and the audio
that would make it fun and interest me as I have a short attention
span when listening to audio books. When researching different
project ideas I came across different genres of audio books, audio
dramas and audio documentary's. Some of these were more
interesting than others however I felt like my attention focused
more on background noises and foley. That’s when I found more
interest in the soundscapes and creating a story just based of the
surrounding sounds. This meant I was quite happy doing the
experimental task and getting to use the equipment.
Positives:
• Get to experiment with background sounds
• Listening to a range of audios including
podcasts
• Using recording equipment
• Using premiere pro is a different way
Difficult aspects:
• Finding a story interesting
• Creating a story without
reading
7. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• After looking at York ghost stores from the York ghost
merchants, haunted york and other press stories, I found it
difficult to find a story that I wanted to create a
soundscape to and purely tell through sound and not
through commentary. The trouble I was having was
creating all the sounds and description to tell the listeners
the story. After my experiment I found it easier to imagine
which stories were easier to tell than others. Another thing
I wanted to take into consideration is the time of the story.
The assignment was given to be a short story so when
looking at different ghost stories I thought about which
stories I could tell within the timeframe.
Stories I considered:
• Fresh phantoms
• 5 college street
• Treasurers house, minster yard
9. Foley – ratatouille scene
• I chose to do the cooking scene from ratatouille because I
felt like I has more opportunity to experiments with the
different sounds of one lace rather than trying to create the
sounds of going to a from different locations.
• I felt like the overall product came out well and a lot of the
foley worked well.
• When listening to it back I think it sounds fairly stop and
start but in the real production I think they would have
added background music to full those silences.
• I think I achieved getting the right volume of the different
sounds compared to each other. I did this during the editing
process and it was more efficient and easier.
10. Recording
• Write about your experiences of recording in different places.
• I chose to do this specific scene rather than the one given to me due to I wanted to
focus of creating different sounds accurate due to the weight and material the
objects were made with. Because of my chosen clip, it didn’t have any different
locations of filming however when picking where I filmed my audio clips, I had to
make sure there was as little background noise and no interruptions. I also chose
different background noises depending on what shot it was doing the scene. For
example when you could see the pot steaming I added boiling water noise. The
main concern was making sure the audio quality was as good as it could been as
well as making sure my movements were in synch with the scenes sounds. I found
that aspect quite hard as I was by myself and had to multitask. The end product
came out as well as I hoped though.
• For my adobe audition experiment I used lord Voldemort voice so that I could
spend time focusing on experimenting on the app and using different effects. I
watched a YouTube tutorials on creating different different voice effect and came
across a demon one which is something I may have used for my project. I adjusted
pitch an sound and then reverbs it as well distortion. I wanted to hard limit the
audio to -0.1db t make it louder and scarier however It sound more comfortable
on normal.
11. Proposal
Working Title:
Stick man
Audience:
Aimed at age 16-24yrs and appeal to all genders,
• This age range would be appealed to this audio because people who are most likely to listen to
it are students. Gender isn’t relevant to the project as it aimed for everyone in the age range.
Appeal to the working class and skilled working class C2DE
• The man was a working class member of society, therefore C2DE would have some relatability.
• The main reason for this would be that C2DE would be threatened by the loss of material gain.
As the working class are mainly labourers and usually work more physically demanding jobs,
therefore would be protective and conservative with their money and assets.
Psychographic group of Balanced/totally integrated
• Because this group ranges from a mix of other different groups, this benefits my project as it is
aimed for the general public
• The story is based around fear of robbery, therefore the achievers would be threatened by loss
of their material wealth. This would also benefit the story, as the socially conscious in the
group, as they would be more susceptible to the horror aspect as they aren’t as comfortable in
society and are over-concerned with how their actions effect the world.
Geodemographic aimed at families in rural villages in York
• By aiming at younger families, I am suggesting the families to watch together.
• By specifically targeting villages in York. Creating an relatability and increasing the horror aspect
due to them living near where the story is taking place.
14. Story
• The stickman- his ghost is locally known in York
as he was a living man in the 18th century and a
resident of 35 Stonegate. He was a very
paranoid old man with a fear that turned into a
habit. The man was terrified of being burgled in
his sleep so every night when the clock turned
midnight he wacked his stick against the wall.
Apparently to this day, the thudding of the stick
can be heard in the dead of night.
15. Script Draft
• Rain and thunder sounds and then door shuts
and the get quieter. Fire crackle and background
noise like dogs barking an kids screaming in the
distance. Footsteps up the stairs and close door.
Light switch off wit heartbeat. Silence until the
midnight clocks . Then distant banging of stick
against wall in same rhythm of heart beat. Light
switch turns back on and heavy breathing. The
banging sound increases in volume. Door
creaking and creepy laugh. Then nothing until
one final hit.

22. Daily Reflection
Day 1
• Day 1 for me was about being able to get my audio recordings on
adobe audition and adjusting pitch and tempo to certain mp3s. It
also helped me know which sounds I still needed to get.
• I played around with change of pitch, tempo and volume as the
more complex methods with be don in day 2 production.
23. Daily Reflection
Day 2
• After getting most of my own recording on the mix
track, I wrote a list of all the recordings I need to
download from online as I couldn’t record them
myself. I applied the music and adjusted the
volume and with the voice effects I downloads,
used a YouTube tutorial to make the laugh sound
more demon like.
25. Research
• Researching about the black tapes were the most useful to me as they were the most on
theme as its genre is horror investigative journalism. They gave me a clearer idea of how to
present a horror story through audio. However, a weakness to listening to the black tapes is
that there was dialogue to help you guide you through the story and a commentator to
always explain anything that could be misunderstood. The research on the project mainly
just helped me realize which stories would work and which ones would not. Once I did
audio experimentation with adobe audition and used an audio downloaded, I realized that I
could use these voice effects within the final product, and they can bring back the horror
aspect of the story. My research in soundscapes helped massively as that helped me gather
a better understanding of how to tell the story just through sound and without the
commentary. A weakness with this research was just the lack of soundscapes on the subject
so my research was limited. However, it helped me improve my planning when it came
writing down every sound for the story I was creating. Due to the lack of soundscapes, I
moved on in my researching and came across lots of ambient sounds, especially when trying
to create nostalgic feelings. I found most YouTube videos that created content that included
ambient sounds, it was to create sounds that were familiar to an action or feeling. For
example, studying would have ambient sounds of pages flipping and background noise of a
house. The weakness with this research was a lot of this media had music behind it, so it
lacked the story telling. However, I did find it useful as it helped the overall outcome in
which sounds, I wanted which people don’t always notice. For example, rain and the clock
ticking. Finally the research on the ghost stories themselves which I found quite difficult. I
found it hard to find I story I was interested in and a story I could create. After reading
multiple story and found one I liked and could see myself making, I decided I wanted to
create a different version of the story
26. Planning
• The first step in my planning was making sure I had a story. I found it hard
to find I story I was interested in and a story I could create. After reading
multiple story and found one I liked, there was the weakness of creating it
without commentary and understanding what was happening. After
picking my story I decided to tell it from the perspective of being haunted
by the ghost instead of the ghosts story. So I wrote a brief notes of
someone waking into 35 Stonegate and went from there. Once I had a ruff
idea of my story it was easier to plan and make a clearer idea of how I was
going to tell it. Making a detailed story after helped my determine which
sounds I need to walk through this perspective. This includes the
background sounds, which sounds I wanted to be louder and quieter. After
writing down the final story as a final script, I found it difficult to
understand every sound I needed to record. I found it easier to a list as a
timeline of the story almost as a checklist to make sure I record everything
necessary
27. Time Management
• Compared to the last project, I manage time a lot better. The planning for
this project was a lot more direct and easier for me to understand making
it easier for manage time. There was no additional time needed for the
project. After experimenting in adobe audition, I got a better perception
of how much time the editing was going to take and knew it would be a
within 3 hours so easy enough to complete in college. After making the
ratatouille foley, I also got a better perception of how much time the
sound creating was going to take and was able to complete within the
time frame. If I had more time with my work and was able to make the
story a longer project, I would have written a script for a longer story and
had a friend commentate over it as well as ambient sounds over the top
(something like the black tapes).
28. Technical Qualities
Voice changer effects
Change of pitch and tempo
Reverbed
Volume changes
Demon voice
With YouTube soundscapes all sounds were downloaded and artificial
I used foley and made most sounds myself
Used a microphone
Foley methods included rice of paper to create sound, wooden box to make creaking and
foot steps
I could have made it more detailed
29. Aural Qualities
My work is clear and sounds clean. Some sounds sound more realistic as I use a
foley approach to my piece. The piece itself did lack creativity however the concept
of the story is created by me and the foley makes it more original. I like how
accurate the ran sounds which was dropping rice onto piece of paper into a bucket.
I also like the voice a sound editing. For example, making it distort, echoing and
pitch changer.
Now I have ore confidence, I would create more f an audio book style ting as it suits
better for this project. I would keep some ambient sound and background noise.
With the narration of the audio, I would keep and ad more music to build up
tension.
30. Audience Appeal
I feel like now I've created my piece, I would aim for it younger years like 10-13yrs as my
story failed to build big amounts of tension making it less scary. The new targeted
audience will be more appealed with the loud banging and the shouting. They are also
most likely to associate babies cries and something wrong and something is bad is going
to happen. However, feel like it would be difficult to follow the short story which is why I
would do narration next time. The narration would make it easier for me to build tension
and the target audience would be of higher age, but also easier for the younger ones to
understand.
