CI librarians use various online tools like Delicious for social bookmarking, Wikis for collaborative information management and project planning, and Twitter and Drupal for social networking. They find information through databases, alerts, RSS feeds, Google Scholar, open access repositories, and images/videos through repositories like Flickr. These tools allow librarians to share resources and expertise with other professionals through tagging, blogs, forums, and collaborative authoring on integrated websites. Libraries, archives and museums are sites of community memory. The first public computerized bulletin board system was called community memory. Trevor’s talk will explore the connections between the development of the web as a global knowledge base, the open source software movement, and digital strategy for libraries, archives and museums. This keynote talk will synthesize research on the history of online community software with practical experience working on open source digital library projects. This exploration underscores the essential role cultural heritage institutions need to play in this era of the web and some important distinctions between how the concept of community is deployed in discussions of the web.

Libraries and universities are discovering ways that social networking and virtual environments can extend the reach of librarianship. Second Life and Twitter are two virtual tools that can help libraries build global and local networks. They enable information seekers to discover, disseminate, and contribute information in interesting and novel ways. Second Life is a virtual world in which librarians can interact with a global audience while transcending physical boundaries. Several institutions have established virtual libraries in Second Life; for example, we worked with the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science to build a virtual Second Life library where writers from our International Writing Program could share their work via live virtual readings. Twitter is a microblogging tool that librarians can use to strengthen their professional networks and discover valuable local information in real-time. We recently implemented Twitter in the classroom to demonstrate how a group of people can use Twitter to share and discuss information about an event as it is unfolding. Our presentation addresses the main features and concepts of both Second Life and Twitter. For Second Life, participants will learn how to create an avatar and learn about the virtual library community within Second Life. For Twitter, participants will learn how to make professional contacts, tweet effectively, and use specific search strategies to find relevant local information. Whether your library is trying to reach a global or a local audience, Second Life and Twitter offer innovative possibilities for reaching your patrons and marketing your library.

Presentation at Stellenbosch University 14th Annual Library Symposium Stellenbosch Institute for Advance Studies (STIAS) November 3, 2016 – November 4, 2016 http://conferences.sun.ac.za/index.php/sulis_symp14/SUALS14 Shaping the academic library of the future: adapt, empower, partner, engage The tradition of the Stellenbosch University Annual Library Symposium of being a platform for discussing new library and information services and developments will continue at the 14th Annual Library Symposium in November 2016. The discussion will be turned to the shaping of the academic library of the future. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of adapting to users’ needs, adapting to new roles as librarians, adapting as a library, empowerment of staff and clients and the importance of partnerships and engagement. The theme is partly based on the recent OCLC report, Shaping the Library to the life of the user: adapting, empowering, partnering, engaging. In this report it becomes clear that “research and learning needs are changing. Higher education is reconfiguring. As a result of these massive changes, the library must pivot and adapt”. The following core themes are mentioned in this report: to empower users, to empower the library, form partnerships and to engage the campus community. The report advises libraries to be able to “move from offering a fixed set of services to a ‘constant beta’ mode of service evolution” . Three different sessions will focus on the following themes, all related to the shaping of the academic library of the future: Digital innovation: Topics of this session may include Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Research Data Management, Big Data, E-learning, Digital Humanities, Next Generation Systems. Collaboration / Partnerships : Partnerships with OCLC, SANLIC and other consortia as well as other collaboration possibilities will be discussed. The user experience: Academic staff, researchers and students of local universities will share their expectations as users of academic libraries.

JSTOR Labs, a team at JSTOR that build experimental tools for research and teaching, sees itself somewhat as conducting "applied digital humanities." In this talk, I describe what I mean by that term and showcase examples of how the tools and methods from the digital humanities (or DH) have informed our work. Abstract Caribbean libraries are being challenged to adapt to changes in the external environment. Challenges in the form of budget cuts and shrinking resources, retraining staff and reorganizing workflows, delivering traditional and innovative services to an Internet -savvy consumer, and competition from aggressive rival information services such as Google. As a result of these and other challenges in this increasingly complex and virtual environment, library administrators have been coerced into becoming more creative in their attempt to provide new and improved facilities, products and services. This paper analyses the linkages between Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and Librarian 2.0 and discusses the benefits of developing library services centered on the Web 2.0 model. The paper identifies specific Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, social networks, folksonomies (tagging and tag clouds), RSS feeds, podcasts, instant messaging and mashups and suggests ways Caribbean libraries can harness and integrate these technologies to provide innovative and sustainable library services. The paper also provides a comprehensive resource list of these emerging technologies which are available free on the Internet.

This presentation gives an introduction to digital libraries. It first explores different defintions of the phrase "Digital Library". It then looks at 11 real life examples of digital library websites (slides 44-112), including Europeana, Google Books, Flickr the Commons, Delpher, Wikisource, The Memory of the Netherlands and Project Gutenberg. Each of these DLs is assessed against five different criteria (concepts, properties) - Content/User experience - Cultural heritage domain (libraries, archives, museums, AV-institutions) - Controlled / run by - Content providing parties - User involvement Many references are made to Web2.0-concepts from Tim O'Reilly's article http://www.oreilly.com/pub/a/web2/archive/what-is-web-20.html From these 11x5 = 55 datapoints 6 trend plots are drawn (slides 116-166) to show "what is hot" and "what is not" in the current DL-landscape. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine.
