Road signs provide essential information to control and guide traffic. They achieve orderly traffic movement by controlling speed and behavior, and directing routes. The Indian Road Congress sets uniform design standards for signs, including shape, color, dimensions and illumination, to ensure consistency. There are three main types of signs: regulatory signs provide legal requirements; warning signs call attention to potential hazards; and guide signs give directional and informational details. Signs are generally placed on the left side of roads but may be on the right or overhead in some situations. Together, road signs aim to reduce accidents by clearly communicating traffic rules and conditions.

2. ROAD SIGNS
 Traffic signs or road sign is the most used and least
costly of traffic controls devices.
PURPOSE OF ROAD SIGNALS;
– To achieve orderly movement of traffic.
– To control speed of vehicles.
– To control traffic behavior such as parking.
– To direct traffic routes.
– To guide road users of hazardous conditions.
– to reduce the chances of accidents.

3. DESIGN AND LOCATION OF ROAD SIGNS
The I.R.C has the code for road signs with
an intensions to achieve uniformity of
design and applications of road signals.

4. The uniformity of design include shape,
colour, dimensions and illumination.
The details of standard signs including letter
style, size, colour are prescribed.
The standard legends consisting of symbols
and word messages are also mentioned.

5. The general rule is to locate signs on the left
hand side of the road.
But under certain circumstances such as sharp
curves to the left, the signs are placed on the
right hand side or channelizing island.
The overhead signs are used on wide
expressways.

19.  These warnings are provided to call attention to
conditions which are potentionally hazardous to
traffic operations.
 These signs require caution and may warrant a
reduction in speed for safety
 The cautionary signs which have a significance
during dark hours must be reflectorized or
illuminated.

20.  As per the I.R.C standardization, a warning sign is in
the form of an equilateral triangle with side of 450mm
supported on post at a height of 2750mm above the
ground level up to the base of triangle.
 Some of the typical warning signs are;
Cross roads;
Narrow bridge;
Dead end or side road;
School;
Steep hill;
Hair pin bend;
Zig zag turns;
Men at work; etc

22.  not capable of providing continuous guidance through
complicated areas and hazardous locations which
road markings can do under normal conditions.
 not capable of being read at long distances which can
be done with flashing or continuous traffic signals
indications.
 They are not capable of spacing vehicles platoons on
busy streets so that the same traffic performance is
obtained as with traffic signals.
