1. COMENIUS BILATERAL PROJECT 2012-2014
March 2013
Every country has got a history, a culture and traditions. Popular games and sports belong to this heritage, and are living evidences. To discover, to share and to learn our traditional sports and games are
a way to find our own roots again, our own identity, but also to get out of the isolation, to know each
other better, to develop the idea of membership in a new community of destiny through a consciousness that has a European dimension.
Our project is aiming to inspire every young person to have healthy bodies by participating in more
sport on a regular basis. We want to create an energy and enthusiasm for sport through the observation of favourite local teams and through learning new sports and traditional sport games and to encourage young people to do sport. In addition, it will give pupils and teachers from two participating
countries an opportunity to work together on a project, to learn about and experience traditional
sports and games of the partner country.

of the project and each partner has the task to coordinate one of the planned achievements of the

Lithuania is in northern
Europe, on the eastern
shores of the Baltic Sea.
The capital of Lithuania is
Vilnius. Beginning at
about the same time as
movements in the other
Baltic republics of Estonia
and Latvia, Lithuania
quickly surged ahead. In
March 1990 democratically elected representatives voted for independence, lost in 1940 with
annexation by the Soviet
Union. Lithuania joined
both the European Union
and NATO in 2004. The
official language is Lithuanian.
Šiauliai is the fourth largest city in Lithuania, with
a population of 133,900.
The city was first mentioned in written sources
as Soule in Livonian Order chronicles describing
the battle of Saule. Thus
the city's founding date is
now considered to be
September 22, 1236, the
same date when the battle took place, not far
from Šiauliai.

In Lithuania
School year 2012/13
has brought a new
challenge to us. A project prepared by our
and our partner‘s
schools: “Generational
link: playing and learning” was accepted by
national agencies.
We launched the project work by announcing it in front of our
colleagues on the staff
meeting for this school
year. It was accepted
with interest and we
started preparations
for the project realization from establishing
a team of teacherscoordinators and students to work on the
project activities. Also
we presented the project and its activities
on the school website.
The first week of December we had our Comenius week. Special
lessons on European
citizenship and the
lessons with the subject
“What I know about the
country partner of our
project?” were held in
our school. Students
were introduced with
the main information
about Portugal. And
then started gathering
information about our
traditional sports and
games. Before Christmas the exhibition of
Christmas cards with
congratulations in Lithuanian and Portuguese
made by our students
was held. The best
cards were sent to Portugal. In January the
students started to
create the logo of the
project, and the exhibition of the best logos
was held at school as
well..
The next steps of the
project were the creation of the multilingual
dictionary and the beginning of researching
work. Students with
the help of their teachers tried to find out as
more as possible information about Lithuanian traditional games
and sports and then to
learn how to play these
games during the physical education lessons.
