Accommodation
Lev Vygotsky: Developed Social

significantly by social development;

John Dewey: Part of Progressive
Education movement in 1900’s which

KEY POINTS OF
CONSTRUCTIVISM
Students learn by doing
Learning is an active constructive process.
Knowledge is gained through personal experience
Great emphasis on Social Interaction
Constructivism is applied both to learning theory and to epistemology.
Epistemology is defined as “The theory of knowledge, esp. with regard to
its methods, validity, and scope.” They both are connected to how people
learn and the nature of knowledge.
Each learner individually constructs meaning, it is learning, there is no
other kind.

KEY POINTS OF
CONSTRUCTIVISM
CONTINUED…
There are two ways that we construct learning:
1) We have to focus on the learner in thinking about learning (not on the subject or
lesson to be taught.)
2) There is no knowledge independent of the meaning attributed to experience by the
learner of community of learners.
We construct knowledge for ourselves as we learn.
Adaptation is the learners cognitive understanding or development at any given time.
Assimilation is when children assimilate new knowledge as they experience new things
and learn new information.
The way in which children fit the information into their lives to change their knowledge
and make sense of their environment is called Accommodation.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT
CONSTRUCTIVISM FOR MY
OWN TEACHING:
I would use constructivism in my classrooms because I enjoy engaging in
activities for my own learning. Handing a students a textbook or handing out
worksheets do not always work for most students. Obviously, teachers
cannot incorporate all different types of learning in one lesson. Therefore,
throughout the school year I can use different activities for each lesson
learned. Which is how I can use constructivism in my classroom. I would
make my classroom a student centered classroom, which I would become
involved with each student and their learning habits. For me, it is a good
feeling to watch students gain knowledge in the best way that fits them.

                                                                      The End!
