Music Video Analysis
Devlin - Brainwashed With the title of the music video it clearly states someone of something is being brainwashed. The video starts off with a classic white transit van which has represented as a criminals van for many years pulling up into what seems to be an abandoned office. The people inside the van get outside and we then see it is at night time which is when most crimes happen with them putting masks on to cover their identity. Showing they don’t want their faces to be revealed which could be because something bad is going to happen. They then go into a room and put a camera into it with the performer/artist (Devlin) walking toward the camera with a double camera effect (a camera looking thought another camera) to put some realism in the video. When we are looking thought the double camera Devlin then walks out and starts to sing. During the video it seems as if they are trying to broadcast a message set up camp in the whole of London. This is because towards the beginning we see some people is masks and balaclava’s marking out locations to which they will most likely be travelling to. We then see a camera view from inside the van in the passenger’s seat looking to the left side of it, showing all the suburb’s of London which might be an indication that they are looking for the area’s they were marking on the map earlier in the video. We then see them stop and get out of the van with projects and aerials, with the workers putting the aerials up outside and the projectors inside the vans, with them finally putting tape round the van suggesting danger is around.
With the lyrics of the song he raps the line saying “I’ll Brainwash your mind like Derren Brown or Charlie Manson”. With Derren Brown being a famous illusionist and Charlie Manson being a notorious serial killer by brainwashing people to kill for him. This is showing that Devlin is willing to use these methods to wreak the reward which he is seeking for. He then says the line “Dirty like Lesley Grantham this is my manipulation”. Lesley Grantham was a well known actor who then was a convicted murderer and jailed for 10 years with him having significant press converge when a sex scandal was released about him. This shows that Devlin is willing to serve these sentences to get him rewards. He then goes on to talk about “I’ll kidnap your vocabulary till my names the only thing that man remembers” and “This is my manipulation so forget the speculation of all the trials and tribulations” This is clearly stating that he wants to take over people’s mind to control them to gain something and if it doesn’t go his way he will wipe them minds and that they shouldn’t worry about anything else because he’s their problem. He also says “Hypnotism with a different frame of mind when he picks the pen up”. This then suggests that he isn’t brainwashing people by hypnotism but using his still of writing to alter their chain of thought. With the choice of camera shots we never see below the waist of Devlin. This is because there is nothing significant about his lower body. But when he goes into the chorus a female singer is involved. But during the duration of the video we never see her face only her lower face, this could be because she is trying to hide her identity because of the illegal activity they might be performing.
Black Eyed Pea’s – Where is the Love ? This video starts off with a person running with a crumpled black sheet of paper with a red question mark on in his hand. This could represent someone stealing something or wanting questions to be answered. We then see a group of people running down the road and sticking the signs to any wall, sign and poster they can find. This might be representing that they are looking for answers and letting everyone know about it. We then see the signs which had been vandalised by the question marked stickers with one of them saying “im not a minority” and with the rest of them saying “don’t” or “no” showing that the world has been restricted to posters saying what people can and can’t do.
Within the lyrics we get a strong hint of religion involved. When the band goes into the chorus they say the line “father father father can you help us with some guidance from above” This is referring to Jesus In the heavens. And with what seems to be a black man preaching about the word of god with him raising his hands to the sky whilst holding a bible showing that he is raising his hands to the heavens, which fits in with the classic story telling of the bible according to Michael Shore’s theory. Also during the chorus we see close up of faces of many young children which all look unhappy. This could show that modern society is ruining the lives of all children. With the black eyed pea’s trying to tell people what’s wrong. But during the end of the video we see the children smiling and singing along to the music. This then shows that the children are much happier with what’s going on. We also see a black man running away from the white police which fit the stereotypical view that every black man is doing something illegal.
Example – Kickstart (Bar9 Remix) The Scene Starts off with a televised bard and long clips due to the speed of the music with a close up a young adult looking from the eastern European origins. Walking towards what seems to be his house. When he opens the door we find a young woman, maybe his girlfriend or sister. Looking at each other in awe. This could represent young love. We then see a short clip of a group of young white males all looking at their phones as a picture of the young man who was struck earlier with all the men having the same tattoo on there body which shows that they are all part of the same group. They are also all wearing some form of clothing that hides their identity meaning that they don’t want their faces to be shown. With the speed of music suddenly quickening up with much shorter clips when two men ran into the house and stuck the young man with Michael Shores theory coming into play when he talked about violence. The typical “damsel in distress” scene comes in when the woman is attacked and the young man having to “save the day”. This also fits in with Michael Shoes theory of Classic Story telling. During this the speed of the short movies quickest up again when the young man find out that he is being chased by a gang and then having to run away. The video also fits in with Andrew Goodwin’s theory that the video is used for advertising when we see a clip of the women putting a pair of classic rebook shoes. We then see a short clip of a group of young white males all looking at their phones at night time as a picture of the young man who was struck earlier with all the men having the same tattoo on there body which shows that they are all part of the same group. They are also all wearing some form of clothing that hides their identity meaning that they don’t want their faces to be shown. The next scene is in the morning when the music is much mellow with the couple sleeping with the man giving the women some food which he had stolen fitting the stereotypical that every young person steals. The music once again quickens up when more of the gang members turn up and a chase happening with shorter clips with the camera following the man’s feel showing the viewers that he is running with a sense of urgency. We then go into a scene when the man and women are in a open abandoned warehouse and the gang is surrounding them we then have a close up of the man face with the music suddenly dropping with everyone trying to beat up the man with his eventfully winning with a long hug showing the passion they have for each other to end the video off.
CD Cover Analysis
Katy Perry – One of the Boys Clouds which might represent something bad is coming or he judgment is clouded Bubble font showing that she is fun and happy Flamingo showing that she is unusual and has a love for animals Fence which could represent she is trying to keep something out ? “One of the Boys” might be saying that she wasn’t excepted by her own gender Colorful cloth’s which might show that she is a fun person and open about herself shown by her clothing
Eminem – Recovery Sign of recovery as mentioned in the title of the album. Suggests he might have been thought a bad illness Walking toward the light showing that he is coming from a dark place and is getting better Spelling the letters unconventionally showing that he doesn't’t conform to everyone else. He is by himself and looking away from us showing he has no friends and doesn't’t really want to acknowledge us Nothing on the road showing that his life is empty A yellow line near where Eminem is which might represent a good and bad side of him, and because he is close to it, it might show that he has come to the good side because with all the positive impute the rest of the hints give.
Jack Johnson – In Between Dreams The tree could represent life or a heart for the music genre Plain yellow background which represents nothing but pure happiness Single solid coloured man showing the power of man and the kind nature of man trying to fix the tree and the hole in the middle, also with the guitar in the frame it could show he needs nothing to perform just his guitar. Hole in the middle of the heart showing that something is missing Only 2 colour's showing the simplicity of the type of music Performing on a platform ?

Location Pictures
All the pictures which I have chosen are designed to take into account the lighting, mise – en – scene and time. With lighting if I needed to have a scene with high levels of light then I would of used an indoor room rather than an outdoor one. But for some scene’s I needed to be outside so I had to have the right timing to make sure the sun was in the right place. With the mise en scene I had to make the image right to make sure that everything was in the right place as well as the lighting. With the time I had to make sure that when I went outside there was light but not too much light to ruin the picture and video.

CD Album Covers
Original Album Cover - Busted This is the album cover of Busted and on this album was the song I am doing. This front cover is very basic. Showing that the band is in trouble with the law, with a big red mark ironically giving the name of “Busted” This also follows the contemporary type of pop album covers of the singers in the front cover
Other examples of CD Covers within the genre I am studying
Analysis of Pop Album Covers The one similarity between all pop album covers is that they have the artist(s) face on them. This is because it is the main selling point for the buyers. The front cover also depicts the style of the pop music. So for the sugerbabes album cover which has a fire background it could show a aggressive type of pop music. While the McFly album cover could represent a happy and a immature type of pop music.
Digipak Digipak’s are the new form of album covers. The traditional Digipak offers 4 sides of art work on the album covers with a traditions one having one the main picture, another one being where the disk goes, another being the track listings and the final one normally being different for every band, these could be a bit of information on the band a few pictures or just a plain side following the theme of the Digipak. Digipak's were created to give the consumer more to buy than just a CD. The digipak offers information about the artist/s. This could be consumed by the editors making an extra CD or making more than one CD for the consumer to get to know their artist more.
Example of Digipak’s.
Analysis of a Digipak Multi-CD’s for the extra contents Colour scheme to fit the type of music More writing for extra contents Folding to make the Digipak more compatible and to look more like a music album when folded.
My Digipak 3 4 1 2
Analysis of my Digipak The location of digipak pictures are obviously in a school. This then goes with the rest of the theme that the music school is based in a school. With the front cover (1) we see an image of the three main artists. This is because in most pop/rock front covers we see the main artists so we had to follow the convention of album covers. With the back cover (2) we see the teacher. The teachers face has a very seductive look suggesting that she is planning something erotic. Also because the typical back cover of an digipak has the song selection we needed to follow this convention so we did. With the inside right side cover (3) a lot of other Digipak's followed their own conventions so we drew up a few optioned and decided to go for the image we had displayed. We chose this because we thought the image of them all sitting down with a essence of intimidation was good. The fact that in both 1 and 3 the image of the pupils looking scruffy shows that they have no real need to look good which could represent the image they are going for. For the inside left cover the image of a guitar is an iconic image. The reason why we chose this is because the CD goes in that area of the Digipak so if it is partially covered then people will still be able to recognise the image.

Questionnaire ResultsDuring the questionnaire we tended to aim towards the younger aged market (13 – 19)
The Results of the Questions are as follows : What is your favorite Genre : Pop 40% R&B 36% Rock 21% Other 3% This then shows that a large amount of the people who we asked said that they prefer to listen to Pop music rather than any other type of music which is why we chose a Pop video.
With your favourite genre what do you like in a video? : Action 18% Romance 45% Adventure 9% Crime 23% Other 5% The Pie Chart shows that the most liked story in a music video is a Romance Story. This is because a very large majority of women picked this rather than the boys all choosing different types.
In a music video do you prefer a solo or a band playing ? Solo 30% Band 54% Don’t Mind 16% This research show’s that a majority of the people I asked said they preferred a band rather than a soloist. This could be because with a band more people are in the video so there are more things that could happen.
In a music video do you prefer just a story line or just the band playing ? Story Line 21% Band 5% Both 64% Neither 10% With this question a majority of the people said it was both of the band and a story line in the video. This could have been because if you were to have one or the other then it would of made a very boring video.
What platform do you listen your music on ? MP3 3% IPOD 80% YouTube 17% CD 0% Tape 0% The biggest majority of the people listened to music was on their IPod. This is because the makers of the IPod, Apple have done a good job of making a unquiet method of lisening to music this enables high sales of the IPod with it being the main method of
Where do you get your music from ? Internet 51% Friends 18% Albums 29% Other 2% A large majority of the modern day media listeners said that they get the majority of there music off the internet. For a large majority they do this illegally by downloading them off illegal sites or convert video’s from video to music. For the rest of the choices Albums are slowly decreasing due to the internet but is still an sound investment for collectors.
What’s the biggest reason for you buying music ? When I was asking the volunteers they said the main reason for them buying music was liking the way their particular type of music sounded. They also said that they liked the celebrities in the video so they followed them in all the video they are in.
Audience Profile Stats I have compiled the data and composed a fact file about a typical audience member. Name – Sophie Angel Age - 16 Gender – Female Preferred music – Pop and Rock Money spend on – Clothes, music, going out
Audience Profile Sophie takes the bus to an all girls school. Throughout the day she listen's to her IPOD and talks about upcoming new artist, new songs and festivals her friends and herself want to go to. Sophie buys all her music off ITunes and normally buys her music on a Sunday which is the only time she isn't tired or busy.
Audience Feedback 1. class and teacher feedback on your initial treatment 2. rough cut- class feedback and teacher feedback 3. class feedback on your digipack roughs 4. final version of everything- class feedback and feedback from anyone else
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals The line goes “She's packed her bag it's in the trunk, Looks like she picked herself a hunk” We then show the teacher pulling the pupil and then kissing him, like the lyrics suggests. We decided to do this because in most video’s in are genre we see the lyrics matching what we see on screen.
2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented The reason why I chose this video is because it shows that the “artists” working hard with there school studies. For the recording company this shows the artists to be working hard as well as having fun. THIs is the way in which the company which the artists to be seen.
3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre The type of genre the band is is a rock pop band. Typically in the video’s are guitar's and drums. This video only shows guitars due the video which we took are idea’s off only have guitars.
4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference In the actual video we see one of the band members climb tree to get a view of the teacher. We have then put one of are actors in a tree to re-inact that part.
5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera With the camera we put the camera angle front on so that we could see all four actors in the clip. This enabled us to portray that the boys are working whist thinking of the teachers.
6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting With this scene we used the natural sunlight because we were outside. IF we were to do a scene inside the I would have had to use artificial light which would of not been as good. This is why we tried to used as many outside clips as possible.
7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene This video shows the three main character's walking with the sunset in the background. The reason why it is such a good example of a mise en scene is because of the even spacing between the actors and the rest of the surroundings.
8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos These two clips are very similar to one another. The one main correlation they have with one another is that the band is in one clip. When a person watch’s a normal pop/rock video the artists in most shots are together. This is what we tried to do to make it as normal as possible. We also used the guitars as well to represent them as rockers.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts 4 1 2 3 6 8 5 7 9 10
The most obvious similarity all the pictures have is that fact that they are in a school. This worked out well in the video because I spend most of my time in school. With the album and poster we wanted to go for a slightly mysterious look and we did this by making the actors look scrappy and mysterious. With the front cover we wanted to keep it basic but making sure that it had all the detail as well as making it look professional.
What have you learned from your audience feedback
1. class and teacher feedback on your initial treatment Teacher – I believe the idea which the boys have shown is very cleaver. This is due to them spending a large majority of there time in school meaning that the most likely cause would be them filming in school. So I think it is a great idea them having a music video based on a school boys life. Chris Troup – The idea is good it makes sense to use the surroundings to the best of the ability of the song. I like the album cover as well with the back cover and the writing going down the board. Charlie Moffatt – The front cover looks like one I would see in the street. This is a good sign because it shows it is realistic. Overall – Overall the people all have a good response and said they like the fact that the video is in school. The one problem they found was that the poster was a little bit simplisticand generic.
2. rough cut- class feedback and teacher feedback Peter Frazer – The initial idea is very good. But the area’s you need to work on would be the timing of the edits with the clips being to long. Another area that needs to be worked on would be lip syncing with a few of the initial works being out of time. The final part which I believe needs to be worked on is the lighting. But they need to make sure that the frame is lighted well enough so that the actors will be seen well. Teacher – The one problem I have is that the lip syncing is out of time. The way which they could improve upon this would be to give the actors a script. Overall – people said they generally liked it with the video starting off well with the lip syncing being the only problem.
Class feedback on your Digipak roughs Charlie Kelly – I love the back cover it seems like the teacher has written on the board then decided to write on the walls which I see as the teacher being rebellious. I also like the pictures of the pupil 's standing and then sittinggiving a good contrast. Jordan Fergurson – The guitar I find is a good choice seeing as we will not be able to see a lot of it so that is clever. But I think that the fount cover is a little bit bare even though the initial idea was very clever. Overall – When I went around and explain the reason's behind my idea’s and why I chose to use desks and suits they then all thought that it was a good idea. The one thought a few of them said was why I didn't’t use any more locations or people in the Digipak.
Final version of everything- class feedback and feedback from anyone else Liza Anderson – I like the Digipak design of the teacher desk and the class room desk it add a real realistic touch. For the poster it just looks like one that I would see in the streets. Only problem is would be that I wouldn't’t be able to see what type of music it is. Sam Evans- I like the existence analysis of the Digipak, the research into the pops background and the finished product was to a high standard the only problem I found was that the miming might have been a little more timed. James Stratton Dobree Carey- In some places I feel there is strong analysis, the use of imagery above text enables myself as a member of an audience to digest and understand clearly what is being researched. Overall – people said that the vast amount of work is good showing that a lot of detail and effort went into the pre production. People especially liked the detail of the scenes because I t let the see step by step what is going to happen, even though it was just a plan.
How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? Apple MacBook Pro HP Scanner 2400 Vivitar Camera Samsung Video Camera SMX
PowerPoint Adobe Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 Digital Editing Software Internet Blogger
During the time where I was making my video and editing it there were a few fundamental flaws in my plan looking back at it. Firstly when I was using the camera I could of used a higher resolution camera. This would help out with the still pictures because they would of come out with much more clarity. This is the same story with the video camera because we were on a budget this meant that we couldn’t afford a better quality camera. This then means that the if we were to compare a professional video to my video there is an obvious difference in quality. With the editing of the video the only way I believe we could improve it would be to have a professional edit it with him using his own editing software. I have used a Apple MacBook Pro to do my Microsoft PowerPoint presentation on. This has enabled me to put all of my data onto one simple document which is easily digested by the consumer. To do my research I used the internet which enabled my to look into other video’s and analysing them to then create my own video.

  • 1. Pre-Production Folder By Alexander Philip Humphreys

With lighting if I needed to have a scene with high levels of light then I would of used an indoor room rather than an outdoor one. But for some scene’s I needed to be outside so I had to have the right timing to make sure the sun was in the right place. With the mise en scene I had to make the image right to make sure that everything was in the right place as well as the lighting. With the time I had to make sure that when I went outside there was light but not too much light to ruin the picture and video.

  • 50. Other examples of CD Covers within the genre I am studying
  • 54. Analysis of a Digipak Multi-CD’s for the extra contents Colour scheme to fit the type of music More writing for extra contents Folding to make the Digipak more compatible and to look more like a music album when folded.
  • 55. My Digipak 3 4 1 2

  • 61. Questionnaire ResultsDuring the questionnaire we tended to aim towards the younger aged market (13 – 19)
  • 62. The Results of the Questions are as follows : What is your favorite Genre : Pop 40% R&B 36% Rock 21% Other 3% This then shows that a large amount of the people who we asked said that they prefer to listen to Pop music rather than any other type of music which is why we chose a Pop video.
  • 63. With your favourite genre what do you like in a video? : Action 18% Romance 45% Adventure 9% Crime 23% Other 5% The Pie Chart shows that the most liked story in a music video is a Romance Story. This is because a very large majority of women picked this rather than the boys all choosing different types.
  • 64. In a music video do you prefer a solo or a band playing ? Solo 30% Band 54% Don’t Mind 16% This research show’s that a majority of the people I asked said they preferred a band rather than a soloist. This could be because with a band more people are in the video so there are more things that could happen.
  • 65. In a music video do you prefer just a story line or just the band playing ? Story Line 21% Band 5% Both 64% Neither 10% With this question a majority of the people said it was both of the band and a story line in the video. For a large majority they do this illegally by downloading them off illegal sites or convert video’s from video to music. For the rest of the choices Albums are slowly decreasing due to the internet but is still an sound investment for collectors.
  • 68. What’s the biggest reason for you buying music ? When I was asking the volunteers they said the main reason for them buying music was liking the way their particular type of music sounded. They also said that they liked the celebrities in the video so they followed them in all the video they are in.
  • 69. Audience Profile Stats I have compiled the data and composed a fact file about a typical audience member. Name – Sophie Angel Age - 16 Gender – Female Preferred music – Pop and Rock Money spend on – Clothes, music, going out
  • 71. Audience Feedback 1. class and teacher feedback on your initial treatment 2. rough cut- class feedback and teacher feedback 3. class feedback on your digipack roughs 4. final version of everything- class feedback and feedback from anyone else
  • 72. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
  • 73. 1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals The line goes “She's packed her bag it's in the trunk, Looks like she picked herself a hunk” We then show the teacher pulling the pupil and then kissing him, like the lyrics suggests. We decided to do this because in most video’s in are genre we see the lyrics matching what we see on screen.
  • 74. 2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented The reason why I chose this video is because it shows that the “artists” working hard with there school studies. For the recording company this shows the artists to be working hard as well as having fun. THIs is the way in which the company which the artists to be seen.
  • 75. 3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre The type of genre the band is is a rock pop band. Typically in the video’s are guitar's and drums. This video only shows guitars due the video which we took are idea’s off only have guitars.
  • 76. 4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference In the actual video we see one of the band members climb tree to get a view of the teacher. We have then put one of are actors in a tree to re-inact that part.
  • 77. 5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera With the camera we put the camera angle front on so that we could see all four actors in the clip. This enabled us to portray that the boys are working whist thinking of the teachers.
  • 78. 6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting With this scene we used the natural sunlight because we were outside. IF we were to do a scene inside the I would have had to use artificial light which would of not been as good. This is why we tried to used as many outside clips as possible.
  • 79. 7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene This video shows the three main character's walking with the sunset in the background. The reason why it is such a good example of a mise en scene is because of the even spacing between the actors and the rest of the surroundings.
  • 81.
  • 82. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts 4 1 2 3 6 8 5 7 9 10
  • 84. What have you learned from your audience feedback
  • 85. 1. class and teacher feedback on your initial treatment Teacher – I believe the idea which the boys have shown is very cleaver.
  • 86. 2. rough cut- class feedback and teacher feedback Peter Frazer – The initial idea is very good.
  • 89. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? Apple MacBook Pro HP Scanner 2400 Vivitar Camera Samsung Video Camera SMX
  • 90. PowerPoint Adobe Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 Digital Editing Software Internet Blogger
