2. Sex & Violence
The purpose of this survey is to try and
understand why violence is less censored in
the media when compared to sexual acts.
I want to understand if sexual acts bother
people more than violent acts, hence the
censorship.
I’d also like to learn why sex & violence on TV
bother people.
3. Facts
A recent poll conducted by TIME showed that 53%
of those polled wanted stricter guidelines of what
can be shown.
Ina study about media affecting kids, 54% of kids
said they have a TV in their room.
Inthe same study, 66% of children (aged 10-16)
surveyed said that their peers are influenced by
the TV.
In
another study,77% surveyed that said that too
much premarital sex is on TV.
4. Hypothesis
I feel that the media shows much more
violent acts when compared to sexual
acts.
I’d
assume watching violent act bothers
people more than sexual acts do.
I think most people in my age group are
okay with the media portraying both acts
meaning we watch shows full of them.
5. Why a survey?
I really wanted to figure out what actually
offended people so I decide a survey or
doing interviews would be the best
choices.
Doing a survey allowed me to get a lot of
peoples opinions in a short time.
Getting a pretty good sample wasn’t that
difficult either.

Sex
Violence
-Matches some of my hypothesis

Sex
Violence
Both
Neither
Sex:6 -A lot of younger people answered “both”
Neither:10
Violence:9 -All people aged 46+ answered “neither”
Both: 25
12. Which is worse?
Neither is that bad to show on TV, media
doesn't’t affect minds.
Sexual scenes are really uncomfortable to
watch.
Violence rarely has any positives.
Both are equally bad and should mostly stay off
airwaves.
It depends on how the act is being portrayed.
13. Why is violence less censored?
The media has de-sensitized us from it.
Tomake war look great and trick people into
enlisting.
Is it? / It isn’t.
Because it’s less imitable.
It’s really not that bad to show on air.
14. What I’d do differently
I would of asked more people, and I’d
get a more even sample of ages.
It’dwould been interesting to ask what
kind of TV people see that has sex and
violence.
I should of ask a question that pertained
to children’s television.
15. Conclusion
Nearlyeveryone I surveyed between 12 & 20
are okay with media portraying violence and
sex.
Violence is more prominently portrayed.
Sexualscenes make people feel more
uncomfortable when compared to violent
scenes.
It
seems the inclusions of these themes in the
media may be a generational gap.
