1) Farag Khodary (2015) “Comparitive study of using steel slag aggregate and crushed lime stone in
asphalt concrete mixes”
 Studies the effect of using steel slag aggregate in the properties of asphalt concrete mixes.
 Comparative study of using steel slag aggregate and crushed lime stone in asphalt concrete
mixes.
 Marshall stability for asphalt concrete mixtures using steel slag is 1.5 times higher than
mixture with crushed limestone aggregate

2) Ibrahim M. Asi et al (2017) “Use of steel slag aggregate in asphalt concrete
mixes”.
 The effectiveness of using steel slag aggregate in improving the engineering properties of
locally produced asphalt concrete mixes.
 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the limestone coarse aggregate were replaced by steel
slag aggregate.
 Replacing up to 75% of the limestone coarse aggregate by steel slag aggregate improved
all the tested mechanical properties of the asphalt concrete mixes.

3) Mohd Rosli Hainin et al (2012) “Steel Slag as an Aggregate Replacement in
Malaysian HotMix Asphalt”
 S Marshall mix design was according to Malaysian specifications.
 Samples were subjected to resilient modulus test ,creep test & rutting test.
 Steel slag show significantly better results than conventional aggregate.

4) Perviz Ahmedzade et al (2008) “Evaluation of steel slag coarse aggregate in hot mix
asphalt concrete”.
 Mechanical characteristics were evaluated by Marshall stability,indirect tensile stiffness
modulus,creep stiffness and indirect tensile strength tests.
 Observed that mechanical properties and electrical conductivity improved .
 The influences of the utilization of steel slag as a coarse aggregate on the properties of
hot mix asphalt

 To propose an effective way of utilising the steel slag which is generated as a by-product of
steel production in an efficient way
 To propose an effective alternative to the bituminous mix used at present, in terms of cost,

 To compare the engineering properties of natural aggregates with that of steel slag
 To compare the strength characteristics of bituminous mix with steel slag utilised as replacement
for aggregates and filler, with that of conventional mix

CONCLUSION
 Steel slag produces a high quality aggregate which can benefit asphalt materials in a
number of ways.
 Steel slag aggregate can out perform natural aggregate in terms of
- Shape
- Resistance of crushing
- Skid resistance
- Durability
- Adhesion
 The use of steel slag can be a win-win result for the environment
- Reduction of waste
- Conservation of natural resources
