Swimming
Ancient history about swimming does not tell
us a particular date or time or origin for the
game.

First swimmer probably watched was a dog
swimming.

Then suddenly one day a person fel in water
and from there dog paddle was born.

The Egyptians were first to use crawl
breaststroke instead of dog paddle. There is
no evidence as to where they learned this art
form.

Universal population was quite conservative in the

Considering as one of the most ancient and
oldest sports in the world, Wrestling in India
has a glorious past.

Journey of Wrestling started in India several
centuries back, during Middle Ages.

Counted as most prestigious and oldest
events in Olympic Games, as it was included
in Olympics in 708 BC.

Wrestling in India is most famously known as
‘Malla-Yuddha’.
These can be
found in great
epic of Indian
history.
Mahabharata
has a huge
mention about
the game
wrestling in
India.
Archery
The game of Archery has got historical
significance as all royals in the ancient days used
to practice archery.

Modern day archery started in early 1970s before
its Introduction in Olympics 1972.

Formalized in 1973 when Archery Association of
India(AAI) came into existence.

AAI has since been promoting an organization for
the sport.

India has been producing some world class
players who are medal hopefuls in International
events of Archery.
SHOOTING

In India, shooting is generally regarded as an
expensive sports which only the affluent, powerful
and the talented with institutional support can
pursue with a serious career.
This is the reason why the sport remains as a
secondary choice of the sports enthusiasts.
With good work of Indian shooters coming into
limelight, more youngsters are attracted towards
the sports to build up a career.
Abhinav Bindra won the first individual Olympic
gold for India.
Major Rajyavardhan Rathore won the silver medal in
Men’s Double Trap at the 2004 Summer Olympics in
Athens.
Eleven Indian shooters qualified for London Olympics.
India has been most successful in this categorey this
year with Gagan Narang and Vijay Kumar winning
bronze nd silver medal respectively.
These people has become the role models of young
Indian shooters.
The national Rifle Association has played its part in
uplifting the standard of shooting as a sport in India.
IT has helped the Indian shooters a great deal in getting
international exposure and concentrate on their
horning skills.
CHESS
Chess has risen in popularity in India in the
last few decades primarily due to its star
player GM Vishwanathan Anand.

It is believed that the game originated from
India as a successor to Chaturanga or
Shatranj.

The All India Chess Federation is the
governing body for chess in India.

According to the WORLD CHESS
FEDERATION Vishwanathan Anand ranks No.
2 after Magnus Carlsen ( 22 years old chess
Grandmaster).
FOOTBALL
Football was introduced in India during the
British Rule and in some parts of the country,
it is equally popular as cricket.

India was an Asian powerhouse in 1960’s,
finishing as runners-up in the 1964 AFC Asian
Cup.

India ranks 154th in the FIFA rankings as of
February 29th, 2012.

The All India Football Federation was formed
on 23rd June 1937.

Domestic competitions for men’s football
include the I-league and the I-League 2nd
division. For women it is the Indian Super
The period from 1951 to 1962 is considered the
golden era in Indian football.

The 1948 London Olympics was India's first major
international tournament, where a predominately
barefooted Indian team lost 2–1 to France, failing to
convert two penalties.

The Indian team started the 1950s with their
triumph in the 1951 Asian Games which they
hosted. Later next year they went on to participate
in the 1952 Olympics, but lost 10–1 to Yugoslavia.
Like before four years earlier, many of the team
played without boots !
Participating for the first time,
the Indian hockey team stunned
the whole world by winning a
gold medal at Amsterdam
Olympics in 1928.
Thereafter, the country
maintained the streak of
winning gold medals at-
   Los Angeles in 1932
   Berlin in1936
   London in 1948
   Helsinki in 1952
   Melbourne in 1956.
Pakistan, for the first time,
halted the winning spree of
Indian hockey team at Rome in
1960 but the Indian hockey
team snatched the Gold medal
back from Pakistan at Tokyo
Olympics in 1964.
By this time, Indian hockey had
established a proud record of
winning as many as eight gold
medals at the Olympics which
has not been paralleled by any
hockey playing nation so far.
The period from 1928 to 1964
can reasonably be described as
the ‘Golden Age’ of Indian
hockey.

India won a medal in every
following Olympics till 1980
except in 1976 where She
finished 7th. The last gold which
was India's last medal in hockey
came in Moscow Olympics in
1980
After the glorious rise of the
Indian hockey, the standard of
hockey playing skills started
diminishing slowly but steadily.
India‟s performance after 1980
was as follows- „84- 5th, „88- 6th,
„92-7th, „96-8th, 2000- 7th and
also 7th in 2004.

For the first time, Indian hockey
team failed to qualify to play at the
Beijing Olympic hockey
tournament in 2008.

India‟s performance at the 2012
games was the worst as it failed
to win even a single match.
