2. Introduction
Maintenance leads to long life of equipment. We, in
India continue to make heavy capital investments, but
not careful to maintain these. The maintenance policy
is framed to answer questions like-
(I) What we plan to do about breakdown of machines
(II) What steps are we going to take to prevent
breakdowns
3. Objectives of maintenance
(I) To improve functional reliability of the production
facilities
(II) To Increase the life of asset
(III) To keep up operational readiness of all equipments
required for emergencies
(IV) For safe production
(V) It prevents wastage of spares, tools and materials
(VI) More automation calls for sophisticated
maintenance.
4. Failure analysis
Newly installed machines show a very high rate of
failure as well as very old machineries because of wear
and tear.
In these two extremes machines also fail but there rate
is very low and it happens because of factors external
to equipment.
7. Maintenance planning and control
(I) Scheduling of maintenance work
(II) Cost control of plant maintenance
(III) Maintenance crew
(IV) Plant maintenance is continuous production and
automation
