Exercise “Individual practice with peer evaluation”
1. What is the problem they are trying to solve and what decision do they want to analyze?
The problem they are trying to solve is to permit marihuana to be legalized.
They want to analyze the decision of legalizing marihuana.
2. What are the affirmations, arguments and inferences they are both making?
The argument and the affirmation made by person ‘Y’ is that the survey done
shows a 61% in favour of the proposal.
Further, person ‘Y’ argues that clinical studies show that “smoking marihuana is
not harmful when using it properly”.
Whereas person ‘Z’, in his ‘critical thinking’ challenges the ‘Logic’ of person ‘Y’ as
to his interest, and concludes that person ‘Y’ brings the argument for his own
benefit.
In addition, person ‘Z’ brings a significant and fair argument on what it means by
“using it properly’!
3. How sound is the conversation as a whole? Is it a critical discussion?
As a whole, the conversation is not sound! The reason being, no scientific
evidence is provided by person ‘Y’ in his claim “…not harmful when using
properly”
It certainly is a critical discussion. Legalizing marihuana, if permitted, can have
devastating effect on those who have absolutely no limits in gratifying their own
desires. Whereby, the proposal needs to be well debated.
