Directions
 A word or phrase is missing in each of the
following sentences. Four answer choices are
given below each sentence. Select the best
answer to complete the sentence. Then mark the
letter (A), (B), (C), or (D) on your answer sheet.
Types of questions
 Most of the questions will test
 grammar
 word usage
 Both
問題の種類
問題のほとんどは以下について見るものである。
・文法
・単語の用法
・その両方
Grammar example 1
 _____ to sign the application before you send it.
 Because the missing part is placed at the beginning of the
sentence, it must be an imperative sentence and the verb
needs to be in the dictionary form. So the possible choice
is either remember or remind. The answer is (B) because
you have to keep in mind that you have to sign the
application. (Someone reminds you to sign.)
 空欄が文頭にあるため、この文は命令文で、動詞の辞書
形を必要とすることがわかる。そのため、答えは
rememberかremindということになる。そして、この文は
申込書に署名することを自分で記憶にとどめて(keep in
mind)おくよう求めていることから、答えは(B)となる。
一方のremindは誰か・何かが思い出させてくれるの意。
Grammar example 2
 Even though I ordered the gift three weeks ago, it
still hasn’t _____.
 Hasn’t is a clue that the verb tense is the present
perfect so the answer is (C).
 Hasn’tは空欄の動詞の活用形が現在完了時制で用いら
れるものであることを示すカギである。そのため、
答えは(C)。
A. arrive B. arriving C. arrived D. arrives
Word usage example 1
 _____ Tom studied very hard, he wasn’t able to pass
the test.
 The two clauses, Tom studied very hard and he
wasn’t able to pass the test, contradict each other and
so the answer needs to be a conjunction that shows
that contradiction, only although and despite do that.
(A) is the correct answer because the first clause
would have to be ____ studying very hard for despite
to be correct.
 二つの節の内容(Tom studied very hard と he wasn’t able to pass
the test)は矛盾している。そのため、答えには逆説の接続詞が必
要である。選択肢中ではalthoughとdespiteがこれにあたる。
despiteを正解とする場合は、一つ目の節が____ studying very
hardとなるため、正しい答えは(A)である。
A. Although B. Because C. Due to D. Despite
Word usage example 2
 The city assembly passed a new traffic law and it
will go into _____ on April 1.
 The answer is a noun. Affect and effect have
related meanings, changing or influencing
something, but affect is almost always a verb and
effect is usually a noun. The correct answer is
(D).
 答えに用いられるのは名詞である。affectとeffectは何かに
変化や影響を与えるという意味を持つ点で似通っている。
しかし、affectがほとんどの場合動詞として用いられるの
に対し、effectは一般に名詞として用いられる。そのため、
答えは(D)となる。
A. affection B. effective C. affect D. effect
Strategy
 Use your grammar and vocabulary knowledge to
help you find the best answer.
 Look at the question
 What is the topic of the sentence?
 If the question has two parts, what is their
relationship, contrast, comparison, addition,
conclusion, reason or result, etc.?
 What word form (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.)
is needed to complete the question?
 What words come before and after blank?
 Look at the possible answers
 Which ones fit the topic, relationship, or required
form?
解答のための方策

・問題文を完成させるには、名詞、動詞、形容詞、副詞な
どのうち、どれが必要か。
・空欄の前後にはどのような単語があるか。
