Developmental Issues
One of the Backward Regions of Assam
50% tribal of which 90% are Bodos
90% dependent on Agriculture
Mainly mono cropped- paddy
Productivity very low-1-1.6 ton/Hac
Mixed Community and intra community tension
Poor Infrastructure – Improvement in Roads
Frequent Bandhs disrupts work
No/Less monitoring of Govt schemes because of
 Law and Order
Conditions of poor
Bodos—Agriculture based, Rain fed paddy, 30% land
less, 50% small and marginal Education is good. Low
 productivity-traditional cultivators. Each household has
loom and some homestead land that produces
vegetables, fruits and Areca nuts. The families have 6 to
9 months food sufficiency and the produce from the
homestead fulfills most of the consumption need.
BSM :Asset less but have encroached government and
forestland. Very hard working people, less mix up with
other communities due to social tension.
Tea-tribe :- Worst off. Settled in the isolated area
bordering to Bhutan, encroached Forest lands.
They are asset less, faced acute problem of
drinking facilities and absence of medical
facilities. Death –Malaria, Jaundice, Diarrhea and
typhoid. Wage earner. Since they didn’t have their
permanent land they are also deprived of the
 government facilities.
Koch Rajbangsi- Same as Bodos, slightly
advanced in agriculture specially the bengali
 speakings, involved in petty trade
Agriculture Scenario

Majority of the farmers are small
     and marginal holders
    Paddy productivity very low
     (Chirang-1.2 T/H; Assam-1.6 T/H)
Only 22% of net sown area is
     irrigated(Assam-37%)
    Knowledge base in agriculture poor
    Extension mechanism-very weak
PRADAN Assam Initiative
Selected 4 Bodo Territorial Council (BTC)
    districts as target area
BTC was created in 2003 after 2 decades of
insurgency, but law and order still major issue
50 % of 27 lakh population are tribal of which
    90% are Bodo.
Initiated SRI Demo in Chirang & Kokrajhar
    district in 2008 khariff
   
Background….
SRI Pilot project from June ’08 with
 support from SDTT
81 farmers-10.7 Hectare in khariff ’08
 and
Results are encouraging
 (4-9.8 Ton/Hectare )
We are trusted in villages, demand
 from more farmers and NGOs…..
Khariff 2009
2009-10 : Plan
3 BTC District (Kokrajhar, Chirang
and Baska) with 3 partner NGO
Partner NGO -150 farmer - 20 Ha

Processes Followed
Awareness meeting at villages-leaflets, colour
folder in local language, flex, SRI movie
Presence of SRI Farmers / VRP, Agiculture
officials, Panchayat Presidents in such meetings
Preparation of Farmers list by VRP

Arrangement of Mandowa weeders from North
 Bengal (Courtesy : IDE, Kolkata)
Training on Nursery raising in each villages
Follow up of same by Professional, VRP
Training on Transplantation -use of low cost
 Rope Marker
Difficulties we faced
Partner NGO opts out due to
 unprecedented draught last year
Heavy rains during April and May
 damaged the summer crop
 considerably
Partnership – Building common
 perspective
Outcome
Continuous draught
 hampered SRI progress ,
specially dry spells after Sept affected
production and farmer took less interest in
 later part.
SRI Crop yield is better than normal
paddy ! but SRI paddy withstand 30 days
 draught which farmers liked much
Existing Farmers increasing their SRI area
Summer coverage increased considerably
Khariff 2010-11 Plan
Target
Supporting 1100 Farmers directly
       PRADAN - 700
       DISHA - 300
        A ST - 100
 Converting 30% of Seed village
beneficiaries to SRI (600 Farmers) in
 Chirang District
Strategy :
Progress So far

 youth organisations
400 potential farmers visited Summer SRI
 field for practical knowledge
Training conducted in more than 40 villages
