CCS Seriously Green Project
1.
2.
3. Objective
To reduce the carbon foot-‐print of our office to zero by eliminating unnecessary waste and by reducing
or off-‐setting unavoidable waste.
What is waste?
Unnecessary waste: anything that needs to be discarded after single use or cannot be recycled. E.g.
plastic glasses, platic bags.
Unavoidable waste or acceptable waste: anything that can be reused over long periods of time or can be
easily recycled. E.g. paper, ink cartridges.
What aspects of the office are covered?
Garbage disposal
Paper and stationery
Air-‐conditioning and electricity
Computer and electronic equipment
How do we do this?
We will implement this initiative in a phased manner to avoid undue burden on company time and cost,
starting with hygiene things and moving on to more advanced ways to conserve and maybe even give
back to the environment.
Phase 1:
Garbage Disposal
1 Garbage bags We will not be using plastic bags for our garbage bins anymore. All “wet”
garbage should be thrown directly in corridor garbage bins.
2 Plastic glasses Everyone should use a water bottle / glasses to drink water and other liquids.
If you don’t have one, it will be provided to you.
3 Plastic cutlery No plastic cutlery will be allowed in the office. Please get reusable cutlery
from home if required.
4 Plastic bags When someone brings an item to the office in a plastic bag, take the item and
return the plastic bag. If not possible, store plastic bags in the pantry for
future use. Do NOT throw a plastic bag in the garbage.
5 Mats for Lunch There will be reusable mats placed in the pantry, to be used instead of
newspaper.
Paper and Stationery
1 Recycling Paper ALL DRY PAPER must be stored in the recycling bin and is not to be thrown
away in garbage. This will be handed over to recyclekaro.com
2 E-‐billing Do not send printed invoices unless expressly asked by the client. Educate the
client about how paper billing is no longer required by the govt.
3 Recycled Printing Only recycled printing paper will be available in the office for printing from
Paper now on.
4 Stationery Do not discard plastic pens after the ink is over. Get a refill from the
stationery.
4. No more wood-‐based pencils to be purchased. Only lead refill pencils to
be purchased from henceforth.
5 Notes Purchase only notebooks which claim to be recycled – if the stationer
doesn’t have them, insist he get them for us
Try to conserve paper when writing notes – two column format
Do not throw away old notebooks and briefing templates – store in one
cabinet for recycling
Airconditioning and electricity
1 Airconditioning Air conditioners are to be used only between 24-‐26 degrees Celsius
2 Electricity Before leaving, ALL switches at your workstation must be turned off,
including switches for peripherals and UPS back up.
No overnight charging of laptops.
The last person to leave the office should check if all switches at
workstations and main switch board are off.
The last person to leave the office should also turn off the internet
modem in the cabinet below the visitor’s seat.
3 Refrigerator The refrigerator should be set for “Winter” at all times.
Do not over-‐crowd the refrigerator; keep excess items in the storage and
move to refrigerator only when space opens up.
Do not keep freezer door open
Computer and Electronic Equipment
1 Energy saving Do not keep a computer or printer on unless required
During lunch put your computer on hibernate / or shut off. This is also
good to refresh your cache
Maintain your power settings on “energy saving” mode, which is
available in Power Options of Control Panel on all PCs
Make sure Energy Saving Mode has the following options selected:
o Dim the Display after 2 minutes of inactivity
o Turn off the Display after 5 minutes of inactivity
o Put the computer to sleep / hibernate after 10 minutes of inactivity
(except the central computer)
Keep your monitors at the lowest brightness that is comfortable for you
– good for your eyes as well
Next Steps
Appoint an eChampion to enforce the policies outlined above
CCS has tied up with Recyclekaro to collect and recycle paper garbage from our office; paper
and non-‐paper garbage bins will be implemented for their collection.
Old computer equipment will be either provided to charity or to a recycling centre.
Implement skype / video conferencing for client meetings and educate the client about the
same instead of wasting fuel to travel to client unless absolutely required. Use public
transportation if possible.
