For the past 9 years, I have practiced as a member of a team that serves as national coordinating
corporate counsel for some of the countryâs leading healthcare companies. This unique role â which,
at times, more closely resembles being in-house than outside defense counsel â has: (i) provided me
the opportunity to hone my research, writing, and analytical skills by requiring me to address a wide
variety of legal issues in jurisdictions across the country; (ii) demanded that I effectively communicate
with stakeholders throughout dynamic, multi-tiered organizations (which include hospitals, behavior
health facilities, physician practice groups, staffing companies, standalone laboratories, and support
service companies); (iii) required me to coordinate and collaborate with and among counsel
representing other affiliated defendants; and (iv) instilled an enterprise-wide perspective conducive to
taking a business-minded approach to solving legal problems. More specifically, I:
- Defend clients against claims of alleged corporate liability in litigation involving medical
malpractice, employment issues, contract disputes, credentialing and background checks,
purported class actions, premises liability, corporate negligence, intentional torts,
hospital/pharmacy software and technology, and the corporate practice of medicine;
- Advise client representatives, as well as other outside counsel, as to issues concerning
corporate structure, intercorporate and contractual relationships, and employment status;
- Prepare persons in leadership positions (at local, divisional, and national levels) for
depositions;
- Manage multiple aspects of the litigation process, including due diligence investigations;
- Direct ESI reviews in coordination with outside vendors;
- Draft motions and supporting briefs, including dispositive motions;
- Assist area hospitals comply with HIPAA and other federal and state statutes regarding
the disclosure of protected health information; and
- Update and revise system-wide corporate compliance policies.
