2. Objectives:
Determination of physiological targets for selection of varieties of Coffea arabica
better adapted to AFS
To provide a toolkit for the identification of metabolic and molecular predictors for
desirable traits to AFS and the prediction of superior parental crosses for
generation of new C. arabica hybrids suited for AFS
To validate these molecular markers and the new breeding strategy through the
selection of a new wave of C. arabica hybrids before the end of the project
To investigate the C. arabica F1 hybrids grown in the end-users’ environment, i.e.
within coffee farmers’ fields with their specific local edaphic and climatic
conditions
To assess the performance for yield, disease resistance and cup quality of
C. arabica F1 hybrids in AFS under different climatic settings (Vietnam, French
Guyana, Cameroon and Nicaragua)
BREEDCAFS (H2020): Development of new BREEDing strategies
for Coffee trees under current and future climates and
adressing sustainability issues (AgroForestry Systems)
3. WP1: Understanding responses of F1 hybrids of C. arabica to biotic and abiotic stresses
Identify robust markers (allelic, molecular, metabolic…) for prediction of best genitors and early
evaluation of F1 hybrids with high-quality and high-yielding under AFS (Partners: ISA, Cirad, Nomafsi)
WP2: Integration and analysis of phenotypic and molecular data via the development of
an interactive bioinformatic platform for assisting coffee breeding
Evaluate the performance for yield, tolerance to heat and water stresses (Partners: NUIG, Max Planck..)
WP3: On-farm assessment (performance and profitability) (“demoplots”)
Assess the productivity and profitability of the new Arabica F1 hybrids in AFS (Partners: Nomafsi, IRAD.)
WP4: Ensuring large-scale dissemination of F1 hybrids in the context of AFS through
technological transfers and economic incentives
Ensure large-scale vegetative propagation of Arabica hybrids by SE (Partners: AGI, NicaFrance, ILLY…)
WP5: Sustainability and scaling-up challenges of the novel breeding strategy
developped in BREEDCAFS
Develop a scaling-up plan of the novel breeding strategy of BREEDCAFS that ensures dissemination
beyond the project (Partners: UCPH, ICRAF, SVN, NOMAFSI,…)
WP6: Management, communication, dissemination
Structure, coordinate and monitor the implementation of BREEDCADS by facilitating
collaboration within and between project partners and WPs
