SETTING GOALS
FOR YOUR ENGLISH
Do we need to set goals to learn a language?
Why do you think so?
Is “I will learn English” a good goal?
Is “I will learn English” a good goal?
What does it mean exactly?
How do you know you have achieved it?
What should a good goal be like?
How can SMART goals help us learn?
I will work on my grammar.
I will practice Business English.
I'm going to improve my writing.

A.
I will read at least 2 news stories in English every week
and choose 3-5 phrases to learn from each story.
I will put the phrases into my notebook and write
sentences with them. I will revise all the phrases in the
notebook each time before adding new ones.
In 3 months time I will have read at least 25 stories in
English and I will have learned about 100 new phrases.
B.
I will listen to podcasts about marketing in English
for at least 15 minutes a day.
I will choose the one that was most interesting and
discuss it with my English tutor the following week.
C.
I will write a blog entry in English every other day.
On Saturdays I will edit the posts from the previous
week– check them for grammar and spelling mistakes.
Once a month I will print the edited posts out and go
over them with my writing tutor.
By the end of the semester I will have written and
edited at least 50 posts.
D.
Week 1: I will choose 5 topics that are good for starting
a conversation and prepare a list of questions I could
ask / be asked about the topics.
Week 2: I will prepare short answers to the questions
from previous week and make a list of phrases that
could be helpful.
Week 3: I will practice the phrases and answers every
day for at least 30 minutes.
Week 4: I will start a short conversation with at least
3 people during my holiday in Sweden.
E.
This month I will focus on mastering the past tense.
I will start every week by watching a youtube video
explaining how to use the tense.
Every day I will listen to the “irregular verbs song”.
On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I will spend 45 min
doing exercises and making sentences with the verb
forms I have problems remembering.
By the end of the month I will be able to talk about my
past using the most common verbs.
What exactly do you want to achieve?
Why is it important?
How is it relevant to other things in your life?
When do you want to achieve it?
What’s the deadline?
How can you achieve this?
What are the specific steps?
What exactly do you need to do every day, week,
month to reach your goal?
Is doing that realistic?
Do you have the necessary time, will-power and
resources?
Who / what can help you reach your goal?
What can make it more difficult to achieve it?
How can you measure your progress?
How will you know you reached your goal?
How will you reward yourself after reaching
your goal?
