21. "The North of England is home to a very significant proportion of the UK's population and yet we currently invest less there than in almost anywhere else. Yet from File on 4 to Granada's Royle Family, Manchester has delivered some of Britain's best network programmes. We want to build a great media centre populated with some of the strongest parts of the BBC, the parts which we know will still be strong twenty, thirty years from now. We want to create a new media lab for the north, working with an established academic and applied research community. We want to create an environment which is great to work in, which is state-of-the-art in terms of kit and working practices and which offers brilliant opportunities both for programme-making and for career progression". Mark Thompson, Director General, BBC
