  3. 3. A complement is A word or group of words that completes the predicate of the sentence.
  4. 4. The “SC” is a word or word group that tells the reader more about the subject of a sentence. SCs require a sentence to have a linking verb, not an action verb. Subject Complement

  6. 6. 1. Predicate Nominative  The predicate nominative is the noun following a linking verb that restates or stands for the subject. Angela will be our soloist. A whale is a mammal.
  7. 7. A Hint You should be able to reverse the subject with the predicate nominative. Think of a mirror image. Angela is our soloist. Our soloist is Angela.
  8. 8. 2. Predicate adjective This is a special type of adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies (directly refers to) the subject of the sentence. The soup is too hot. The plant looks dry.
  9. 9. Objects Objects are nouns or pronouns that receive the action of the verb in some way. Also a complement that do NOT refer to the subject,

  11. 11. 3. Direct Object Noun or pronoun that receives or shows the result of an action. Answers the question “what”? or “whom”? Follows an action verb Her poem won an award. “poem won what”?
  12. 12. 4. Indirect Object The indirect object identifies to or for whom or what the action of the verb is performed. Follows an action verb You can’t have an IO without a DO Sam sold him the football tickets. ( “sold tickets to whom”?)

  14. 14. Gerund Subject: Exercising is good for our health. Subjective complement: Lyka’s favorite exercise is jogging.
  15. 15. Gerund Object of preposition: Merla keeps herself in good shape by dancing. Direct object: Lester does boxing in the gym twice a week. Appositive: My only exercise, walking, is not taxing.
