1. ACEDEGBEGA, QUENNIE MARIE M.
BACR 2-1
Blue Bustamante
1st Telephone call from George to his wife. George is expecting that his family might not be proud his work in Japan. His wife know that he is an engineer in Japan, but not really sure of it because George don’t tell her. So as the conversation goes, they talk about their son’s favorite show. This show is Force Five, which he is working as a stunt man of Blue Force. And Blue Force is his son’s favorite character. His expectation was violated but in a positive way, knowing that the show is airing in the Philippines and his son’s favorite was his character he know that if he confess that his job is not engineer but a stunt man of Blue Force, he know that his family will be proud of him specially Kiko, his son. This is an example of expectancy violation theory.
There is also a time where Roger got drunk in Beer Garden and Roger confess that he is jealous with George’s life, because he have family and work for them. He said he is jealous because he think that he is irresponsible and no one love him. George asked Roger about the girls he is sending mails but they are not his girlfriends but his grandma’s friends. In this situation, Roger confesses a very personal information. And this scene best explain social penetration theory. Roger and George are already friend, and they spent time together. That is why Roger is confident enough to self-disclose to George.
At first George doesn’t want his job, because he think that being a stunt man is lame, but Roger explained to him that his job is cool and if he have the capability he would have be the Blue Force (the character that George was portraying) and Roger also made George realize that his job is not just a job, it is saving planet earth which is a metaphor but somehow he has a point and it made George love his profession too, to the point that he doesn’t want to lose his character in the show. This is a cognitive dissonance theory because George does not believe that his job is not a job that someone should be proud of, but because of his situation, and there are no other work for him, it made him believe that his job is important and he should be proud of what he is doing. It’s a kind of no-choice situation.
2. Kabisera
Andres doesn’t want to sell the drugs that he found, but because his son needs to undergo in operation he decided to sell drugs. This is an example of peripheral route, there is a quick decision. He immediately decides to sell drugs, and he does not think of consequences that might happened. To be more specific this scene is an example of scarcity, there is a quick decision because they consider time. If Aj, don’t undergo in operation as soon as possible, he might die or might cause infection that is why Andres immediately decides to sell drugs for Aj’s operation.
Andres meet Paolo in canteen near in the place where Andres and Jose collect money. Andres meet Paolo again in Jose’s house, Andres was so uncertain with Paolo, he think that they might be betrayed by Paolo because Paolo is a policeman. But Jose explained that Paolo is worth-trusting person that he can’t betray them. So as their activity goes there is a verbal communication between Andres and Paolo, reducing Andre’s uncertainty to Paolo. That is why this scenario describe uncertainty reduction theory. Andres talked to Paolo and Paolo talked to Andres and reduces uncertainty.
There is an increase of anxiety for Andres in selling drugs because he know that it’s against the constitution. There are times that he want to stop it because it’s illegal and he is already an ex-convict and he didn’t want to go back to jail. Andres was torn between two things, selling drugs to give the needs of his family or stop doing this because it’s illegal. Andres had a hard time thinking about these things. This scenario best explain cognitive dissonance because Andres is acting something that is outside his beliefs, he sell drugs against his will. Especially when his son, Aj got into a car accident he has no choice but to sell drugs for his sons operation.
3. Woman of the Ruins
It’s very normal for Catholic to sacrifice specially in holy week. In Woman of the Ruins there is a scene where males are hurting themselves in part of the penitence. It is an example of elaboration likelihood theory and to be specific it is under the peripheral route. Pasyon, Maria’s husband joined the penitence because it is a part of their culture. This scene is a social proof, Pasyon did that because everybody do so. Though it’s a part of their religion I think Pasyon did that because there is a big consideration or acceptance of the society of what they are doing even though it is hurting their own selves.
Maria's only hope is her last child in which she draw her strength. But when she deliver it turn out that the child is dead, it’s a violation of Maria’s expectation. Before she deliver the child, Maria is a bit excited because after her daughter died this is the time that she will be a mother again but it turn out she didn’t expected, the child is already dead. So the reaction is negative because of the negative outcome or opposite of her expectation. It is an example of expectancy violation theory.
Olga and Sol was talking about the incident in their island, Sol says, I thought Maria is the key to the success of our island, she gives us hope but look what happened. And then Olga says, maybe we are cursed not Maria, but us. This is an example of attribution theory, Olga is saying that the incident happening in their island is because they are cursed. If we will only analyze there is no direct relationship between curse and their island at least for science. She is attributing that, so she can blame something for what is happening in their community.
4. Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?
Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon is trying to present the way people live in Spanish to American occupation era. It portray the culture and the character of every clan in the film. It also tell people how education is important even in that era. It is really good movie because of its truthfulness, and I would like to characterize Kulas as innocent in many things specially when it comes to immorality because there are many things that he did not notice specially when Diding is obviously using him for getting money and fame. But on the other hand, Kulas is a happy person and full of enthusiasm until he he was slap in reality as he observed and had realized that the world is so cruel. And also, Kulas is the kind of person who can be contented in what he have even if he is poor. And even if got rich, Kulas attitude didn’t change, proving that he have a good heart, compared to Diding that is just pretending that she is like Maria Clara, that she is a good heated woman, and that remind me of saying, “money don’t change us it shows our real attitude” which is very accurate for this movie. It also present the good relationship between Filipino and Chinese. And the movie characterize Chinese as hard working people which I think Filipino should simulate. But Filipino chose to be just a simple citizen with no identity, maybe because they have confusion because there are a lot of people who are occupying the Philippines. I remember Kulas asking can I be called a Pilipino. And said no, you can be called Pilipino if you are willing to take responsibility. Which can be a motivation for every Pilipino to persuade in life because they wanted to be called a Pilipino. But on the other had it’s like the Spanish is taking our own identity, it makes the people like they are not welcome or they don’t have their own identity in their own country. It’s a Spanish strategy for the native Pilipino to lose power in governing their own country, but because of the bravery of the other Pilipino people they fought for our countries freedom from foreign. The movie represent Pilipino in 2 aspect at least for me, it’s a contrary aspect. One is that Pilipino is letting foreigner to govern their country, and be like the foreigner because they think that that is much respectable that being a Pilipino. The other aspect is opposing to those foreigner and fighting for the democracy or freedom of the Pilipino people. But at least the brave Pilipino who knows how to stand in their own fit was emphasis in the movie. Pilipino fought and won. I think this movie evidently portray the expectancy violation theory. There are many expectation that was violated in the movie, first is the priest thought of Kulas is tulisan which might kill him because he is a priest, next and the one I will highlight in my explanation is when Kulas is already rich, of course if somebody will get rich that person will expect that his life will get better with the help of money. But it turned different for Kulas which I think will make us realized that money is not the most important thing in the world. And for wanting to be rich, expectation of Diding got violated also, she thought that if she have money she can have power and she will be respected by others, but unfortunately it turn out in contrast. But because the way she did in getting money is bad, that is why people hated her, and no one love her, she even lose Kulas who love her so much, and because of her greediness she loses everything. Every expectation that is violated in this film results into sadness of the person who expect except for the priest who thought of Kulas being a tulisan.
