2. On the MDGs, Goal 2 (Achieve
universal primary education ~ Ensure
that all boys and girls complete a full
course of primary schooling) is one
target to be met with 2010 report stating
that nearly nine out of ten children are
now enrolled in school and rapid
improvement in youth literacy. This can
be attributed to the curriculum.

7. In the early years of 20th century, the
traditional concepts held of the

teacher, and also learned by the
students.

10. Caswell and Campbell viewed curriculum as
“all experiences children have under the
guidance of teachers”. This definition is
shared by Smith, Stanley and Shores when
they defined “curriculum as a sequence of
potential experiences set up in the schools
for the purpose of disciplining children and

lesson, planned or otherwise. Humans
are born learning, thus the learned
curriculum actually encompasses a
combination of all. Many educators are
unaware of the strong lessons imparted
to youth by everyday contacts.

17. One of the best known curriculum models is The Tyler
Model introduced in 1949 by Ralph Tyler in his book Basic
Principles of Curriculum and Instruction in which he asked
4 questions:
1.
What educational purposes should the school seek to attain?
2.
What educational experiences can be provided that are likely
to attain these purposes?
3.
How can these educational experiences be effectively
organised?
4.
How can we determine whether these purposes are being
attained?

18. Another approach to curriculum development was
proposed by Hilda Taba in her book Curriculum
Development: Theory and Practice published in 1962.
She argued that there was a definite order in creating a
curriculum. She believed that teachers, who teach the
curriculum, should participate in developing it which led to
the model being called the grass-roots approach.
She noted 7 major steps to her grass-roots model in
which teachers would have major input. She was of the
opinion that the Tyler model was more of an
administrative model.

19. Galen Saylor and William Alexander (1974)
viewed curriculum development as
consisting of four steps. According to them,
curriculum is “a plan for providing sets of
learning opportunities to achieve broad
educational goals and related specific
objectives for an identifiable population
served by a single school centre”.

as the changes that occur in society:

a listing of subject to be taught in school.
In a broader sense, it refers to the total learning
experiences of individuals not only in schools but in
society as well.
