Values of social work1
Values of social work2
 Values o social work
 Every profession o human behavior has some values and
on the basis of these values it achieves its objectives.
Social values have significant role as they maintain social
equilibrium, unity in behavior, psychological foundation of
life, determination of role and evaluation of social events
and problems. The basic value of social work do not
spring up like wild flowers by the wayside; they are,
instead, rooted in the deep fertile belief that nourish
civilization.
 Kohs has divided the value o social work into primary and
secondary. He described ten values as the primary
values o social work. They are:

Values of social work3
 i. The worth and dignity o man
 ii. The capacity of human nature to achieve full human
potentials
 iii. Tolerance of differences
 iv. Satisfaction o basic human needs.
 v. Liberty
 vi. Self-direction
 vii. Non-judgmental attitude
 viii.Construction social co-operation
 ix. Importance o work and constructive use of leisure
 x. Protection of one’s existence from the danger caused
by man and nature
Values of social work4
 Misra has described 12 primary values of social
work.
 1. Social work believes in the redistribution o
economics and political power in more egalitarian
manner.
 2. Social work believes in the social feasibility o
production and in the subordination o production to
social purposes.
 3. Organized labour makes a positive contribution to
community life and should be accepted as
constructive rather than a destructive force.
 4. Social work believes that economic role should
not be assigned by ascription, or according to status,
but by the standard o achievement
Values of social work5
 5. Social work believes in the removing economic
imbalance by plugging the sources o black money
protecting the public sector and taking sincere and
honest measures for the establishment of socialistic
state.
 6. Social work believes in social planning that organized
for the welfare o the great amasses of people in a
socialist economy.
 7. Social work believes in the service state which is
oriented to well-being of everyone and makes the
acceptance of human conservation as the democratic
task.
 8.Social work believes distributive values as aggregate
value.
Values of social work6
 9. Social work believes in social justice
 10. Social work believes in distributive justice which
implies that the rewards should commensurate with
the distribution maid by an individual in society.
 11. Social work believes in religious political and
scientific deencapsulation
 12. Social work believes in modernization
Values of social work7
 VALUE RELATING TO INDIVIDUALS
 The domination concepts in early years of social work
development were individualization and the friendly visitor.
Individualization was applied not only to the charity
organization worker, but sawed up in many other area of social
work. The welfare of the individuals has always been central
values life, individual has always counted. There are nine
values related to individual.
 1. Every individual has his worth
 2. Every individual has right to get respect.
 3. Individual reacts in totality.
 4. Internal and external conditions o each of each individual is
different. Therefore, their behaviors are different.
 5. Individual has right to develop his personality according to
his choice.
 6.Individualization is essential for his concrete help.
 7. Personal value i.e. thoughts, feelings, beliefs are impotent
to be studied.
 8.Individual has right of self determination.
 9. Individual rests with total environment
Values of social work8
 VALUE RELATED TO PROBLEM
 A problem arises when an individual fails to reach his objective
through the learned habits and methods. Therefore, social
work believes in the changing of the behavior patterns and
methods of approaching the objective. Problem either effects
social functioning or is
 affected by social functioning. Social worker believes in the
importance of or strengthening social functioning of the Client.
Problem has many side effects and creates many other

 Problems. Problem has multifarious effect on human life.
Internal and external factors o the problem not only happen
together but may be a cause of one another. Everybody feels
problems. The person who solves these problems dose
become client therefore social work believes that problem
solving capacity may be increased in the individuals
Values of social work9
 VALUE RELATING TO RELATIONSHIP
 The person who come for help- to the agency is accepted
by the worker as an individual nit as a case. The
relationship is established on this basic assumption.
Client is accepted as he is. Social worker does not have
subjective feeling about him. The relationship is
established in such a way the feeling of the client is not
hurt. He has right of expression. The relationship is
established on the basis of equality. There is on feeling of
subordination in the client. The basis of relationship is
love, co-operation, sympathy, and help. Through
relationship client are stimulated and insight developed.
Social worker use relationship as a tool for the solution of
the psycho-social problems of the client
Values of social work10
 VALUE RELATING TO SOCIAL AGENCIES
 The nature of social agency is always
welfare and humanitarian. Ten proper use of agency
recourse may solve the problem. There are a number of
agencies for the welfare of the needy but they are
ignorant. Social agency is competent in dealing with
maladjustment problems. Problem can only be solved
with the help of agency through using its service and
opportunities.
 The objectives of the agency are fulfilling through
programmers. The agency which has faith in democratic
values may use social work services. Social agency
generally helps those individuals who voluntarily wish to
solve their problems and have desire to become self
dependent.
Values of social work11
 VALUE RELATING TO SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE
 Social work believes in scientific knowledge and scientific
practice. Since the begging of the society there had probably
been some degree o some concern from the man in distress.
It might have depended on religious, moral, political, and
economic consideration of the area. Social work has
humanitarian attitude. It offers both social treatment, and
psychological education depending on human needs. Social
works accepts the basic needs of all children of all parents
irrespective of class and caste. Social work methods believe in
democratic behavior. The purpose of social work is on one
hand to strength the individual and on the other to provide for
such arrangement in society it is in the background of social
philosophy o justice, equality and fraternity that the method of
social work has been depend by the practitioners. Social work
believes in social justice it equal opportunity to all to develop
ones personality in the way one likes approved by the society.
