ESl Pedagogy Research Project 2011. Beverly HIlls Intensive English Centre. Francine Harvey, Michael Harmey and Lisa Lum. Funding by Multicultural Project Unit. Newly arrived ESL students on transition to mainstream high school move from a commonly strongly supported learning environment to a commonly independent learning environment. This study explores ways to give high challenge and high support (through rich assessment tasks and wiki scaffolding) to equip students with the language of self and peer assessment for the purpose of developing learner independence in preparation for high school. Also to develop students awareness of high school expectations regarding assessments and marking criteria. Artworks by Chris Lawrie

While the viewpoint of the key stakeholders may differ, assessment is a vital component of any educational programme. For students, assessment shapes and determines the focus of their learning. Lecturers view assessment as an important part of learning, but will also focus on other aspects such as module content. Assessment provides a lecturer with feedback on the effectiveness of their instruction. The policy maker views assessment as a tool to measure the success of instruction in achieving learning outcomes. Assessment can also trigger warning signals for programme teams within the online distance education context. Due to the lack of contact between students and the programme team, early indicators can alert administrators to ‘at risk’ students. In 2012 a project with the aim of improving assessment writing in an online BA (Hons) in Humanities began with the development of a guide for designing and writing assessments for online distance education students. In 2013 the appropriate assessment types required to provide students with reasonable learning opportunities to achieve the programme learning outcomes, as well as module learning outcomes, were identified. This resulted in the creation of an assessment matrix, for the programme’s modular structure, which provided a detailed overview of the appropriate assessment types from a programme level perspective. Currently, to progress the project, an online course and associated training workshops are being designed for assessment writers. This paper examines the process involved in: the creation of the guide; identifying the appropriate assessment types for the achievement of the learning outcomes; the development of the assessment matrix and; the ongoing development of an online course and training workshops. The paper also details the lessons learned from the project thus far and outlines the future plans that have emerged following the implementation of the assessment matrix.

The use of contemporary English language teaching methods and the use of British and American textbooks are affecting classroom culture and student behavior in ways unexpected by the educational systems which have adopted them. While this has sometimes been analyzed solely in terms of cultural or linguistic imperialism, the changes can also be seen by local observers as positive and in keeping with behaviors valued by the local culture. In educational systems which have traditionally stressed recitation and a teacher-centered classroom, the language development activities of communicatively based classes are producing not only increased fluency but also increased student confidence in forming and expressing opinions in their first language. From simple (and amusing) examples such as the eight-year-old picky eater trying a new food “because Jack in my English textbook eats it” to high school seniors with clearly increased critical thinking skills, the cultural influence of the English class extends beyond the ability to communicate in a new language.

Interdisciplinary Research Projects and World Conference on Existential Harmony - 2014 The world is facing many a challenge like pollution of air, water and soil. Natural resources are fast depleting. Population growth-rate is outstripping resources worldwide. There is an uneven distribution of sources of livelihood. Multinational corporations are putting undue pressure on governments and twisting their policies. Nuclear weapons pose an imminent threat to the survival of mankind. Confrontationist policies and use of military power to resolve economic and political interests are on the rise. Genocide, racism, fundamentalism and terrorism have wrought havoc worldwide. Issues relating to personal life like rising divorce rate, depression, stress and lifestyle diseases etc., are causing an unbearable tension in the society. Therefore, a holistic approach is needed to grapple with the current unhealthy syndrome. IASE (D) University and Gandhi Vidya Mandir, Sardarshahar, Rajasthan, India has launched a hydra-headed Interdisciplinary Research Project on peace and harmony. Approximately 100 interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research projects would be undertaken under the guidance of eminent professors and research scholars. The University has established Six Harmony chairs (Harmony Professors) to co-ordinate these projects namely Chair of Philosophical Harmony, Religious harmony, Harmony through Science & Technology, Social Harmony, Political Harmony & Economical Harmony. This will be followed by a World Conference on Existential Harmony 2014 to explore the philosophy of existential harmony. The Conference will also highlight the scientific aspects of the universal order and examine social, economic and political theories with the objective of drafting a universally acceptable curriculum for college and school students. Research studies, right from the earliest literature down to recent times are focused on the essential cosmic harmony - interrelatedness and interdependence of all planets and all beings. There is divine unity in the phenomenal diversity. There is continuity in the process of evolution in the four stages of the Natural Order - material order, respiratory order, animal order and knowledge order. Every unit in the Nature is coherent from within and correlated to the Cosmic Order from without. All existing living and non-living objects are self-controlled and inherently balanced by the Laws of Nature. The Earth planet is an important part of the whole cosmos. It is essentially governed by the Laws of Nature and it functions in a harmonious manner. It serves as the most important natural source to the survival of ‘N’ number of material bodies. On the Earth planet, there are billions of objects, comprising human beings, flora and fauna, the atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere, which are interdependent and interrelated in a harmonious Order. This Order has its own intrinsic laws, which regulate its functioning, articu

In the field of Information Technology the need for students to be career ready upon leaving University is more important than ever. Employers are reporting a shortage of graduates with adequate skills, arguing that students are often unprepared for the workforce. In an effort to address employability concerns tertiary curriculum is looking towards portfolios as a way of presenting a picture of students skills. This presentation will focus on the efforts of the School of IT at Deakin University in using a course wide portfolio approach to support and produce graduates that meet the requisite skill set as required by industry. Using resources provided in the Information Technology Course Hub, hosted in the Learning Management System Desire2Learn, IT students build a portfolio that provides evidence of their achievements with respect to relevant learning outcomes, and showcases their skills, achievements and career competencies. The process of building the course hub, and outcomes so far, will be presented in this session.

As a student in this class, it is important that you know this information and that you use it as a guide to support your learning throughout the semester. Professors will place the Syllabus and Course Guide in Banner Course Files and will upload it into the Desire2Learn (D2L) Online Learning Management Platform so that students can access this Reading in the Content Area is a course that is designed to assist the enhancement of students’ competencies in reading and learning. Emphasis will be placed upon methods and procedures for use with interdisciplinary readings designed to provide a link across the disciplines for directive work in all fields of college study. The course will not only strengthen students’ literal comprehension but also the development of inferential comprehension in content area courses, the media, and socio-technical systems. Strong learning strategies will be formed by connecting new knowledge with prior knowledge, as well as connecting with social issues and events. Rationale Because many students have not read widely or deeply, they cannot be active independent learners. They have not learned and practiced the strategies that meaning is constructed by the reader as he/she engages with the various texts. College materials necessitate proficient reading skills; an effective college reading program, then, must help students to develop and master those essential tools so that they can achieve their higher education goals and lifelong learning. General Course Goals To assist students with the mastery of specific skills in reading comprehension and logical relationships that lead to the development of high order thinking ability. Particular emphasis is given to understanding main ideas, facts versus opinions, direct and indirect statements, inferences, categorizing ideas, and organizational principles to construct meaning from a variety of texts. Course Competencies: Learning Goal.

Assessing Pupils’ Progress (APP) is the new national approach to assessment that equips teachers to make judgments on pupils’ progress, fine-tune their understanding of learners’ needs, and tailors their planning and teaching accordingly. QCA have recently piloted this approach in ICT to compliment those already developed for Science, Mathematics and English. The pilot has been greeted enthusiastically by the teachers involved. This session will introduce the methodology and some of the materials developed in addition to hearing from one of the pilot schools about their experience.
