INSTITUTION
INTRODUCTION
What is group?
According to oxford dictionary
“A number of people or things
that are located, gathered, or
classed together.”
WHAT IS GROUP WORK?
Group itself doesn’t have significance unless and
until it involved in certain activity, thus the role of
group work come into existence. Group work
as defined as “as a method of social work
which help individual to enhance their
social functioning through purposeful
group experience and to cope more
effectively with their personal, group and
community problems.” (Giselle Konopka)
BENEFITS OF GROUP WORK
• Personality develops gradually through
interaction with different people.
• Helpful in decision making.
• New ideas will flow
• Work load will be distributed among
members.
• Promotes democracy.
NEED OF GROUP WORK IN
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
• There is requirement of holistic
approach to make student a
responsible human apart from being
qualified.
• To develop coping skills with the
present days stress.
• To overcome stress recreation along
with purposeful and meaningful
message is necessary.
We will narrow our scope and
concentrate to understand the single
aspect i.e. how group work is being
done in school?
WHY IN SCHOOLS?
There are following merits of practicing group
work in schools:-
• Students spend a lot of time in groups and are
comfortable working in it.
• Students are familiar with the school
environment and no special efforts are needed
to make them participate in the group.
• Group work can be expected to improve the
relationship between students and teachers and
between students; it will improve the quality of
learning.
BUT IT ALSO ACCOMPANIED BY
Challenges
• Shortage of time between students is the
biggest obstacle in practicing group work.
• There is no separate place for practicing group
work.
• The scarcity of staff filled with necessary skills
and attitudes.
• If only children with problems will be forced to
participate in the group work, there may be
resistance as they may feel that they being
highlighted among other children.
AIM OF GROUP WORKER
• Sensitizing the teacher to understand
the common emotional problems of the
student.
• Training teachers in basic counselling
skills.
• Training teacher to identify and refer
student who need professional mental
health intervention.
• Training students in sex and sexuality.

• Promoting conducive environment and to
eliminate problems like ragging, teasing
and bullying.
• Helping students to cope with academic
stress.
• Training teachers to adopt non aggressive
style of promoting discipline.
• Interacting with parents as a group and to
educate them on the psychological needs
of their children
PRINCIPLE TO BE FOLLOWED WHILE
WORKING WITH CHILDREN
• To maintain confidentiality.
• A group worker should not be biased.
• Purpose and goal of a social worker should be described.
• Listen to the opinions of the group members whether you agree
or disagree.
• Choose those activities which are useful and enjoyable for the
members.
• Starts preparing for the termination process before a student
start showing the sign of dependency on the group worker.
• Homogeneity in terms of age, sex, and class is a prerequisite for
the success of group work in children.
Types of groups can be used
• Educational group.
• Recreational group.
• Personality development group.
• Treatment group.
GROUP DESIGN WHICH CAN BE USED
Wyre's suggested five kinds of group DESIGN:-
• CLUSTER GROUP.
• CLASSROOM GROUP.
• SPLINTER GROUP.
• TELESCOPIC GROUP.
• SOCIAL EDUCATIONAL GROUP.
POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES IN GROUP

• PSYCHODRAMA
• DANCE.SONG ,EXERCISES.
ROLE OF A SOCIAL
WORKER

• TEACHER.
CONCLUSION
• GROUP WORK IS THE NEED OF A TIME
WHERE THERE IS A LOTS OF STRESS.
• A TECHNIQUE OF SOCIALISATION
WHICH HARNESS TEAMWORK AND
FAITHFULLNESS.
• AVOIDS THE CONSEQUENCES OF
ISLOLATION AND PROMOTES POSITIVE
EFFECTS OF INTERDEPENDENCY.
