3. Introduction
• Cosmetics are described by the Federal Drug and Cosmetic
Act as "articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled,
sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human
body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or
altering the appearance.
• " Skin care, creams, lotions, powders, lipsticks, fingernail
polishes, eye and face makeup, hair colours, deodorants, infant
goods, bath oils, and a wide range of other products are all
considered cosmetics. Soap is not a part of it.
• The newest fashion and beauty trend is using herbal cosmetics.
4. • The market for and sales of the items made by the herbal
cosmetics business is expanding globally.
• Lip colouring has been a tradition since the prehistoric era.
• The usage of herbal products has grown recently, and the range
of Some lipsticks double as lip balms, adding colour and
hydrating qualities.
• The many qualities of the herbs employed in cosmetic
preparations include antibacterial, antiseptic, anti-
inflammatory, and antioxidant effectscolour colours, textures,
and lustre options has expanded.
5. Objective
• Herbal colours are employed in leucoderma, namely in the
lips, since they are non-toxic, highly lipophilic, antioxidant,
and anti-microbial.
• Purplish red, ruby red, beetroot purple, dark violet, pastel red,
light red, purplish red, rose red, deep majenta, dark purple,
orange, and deep violet are just a few of the original colorant
hues.
• Additional shades can be created using different combinations
of these colours.
• Organic and inorganic acids and bases can change colour to
distinct colours.
6. Material and method
1.WAXES
• The function of waxes is to give structure to the lipsticks and it
solid, even in warm climates. Glossy and hardness of lipstick
are largely depend on the characteristics and quantity of the
waxes used.
7. 2.Cocount oil
• It effectively soothes sunburn and blisters , remove dead skin ,
and promotes the growth of newer , healthier skin for a
glowing complexion. moisture to soften , lubricate and cool
skin such as those affected by the discomforts of condition like
Athlete’s foot , psoriasis , and warts.
8. 3.Beetroot juice
• It consist of multiple biologically active phytochemicals
including betalains, flavonoids, polypenols, saponins and
inorganic nitrate, it is a rich source of diverse minerals such as
potassium, sodium, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium,
copper, iron, zinc.
• Uses: - It is used as colouring agent. It is used as a binder. It
gives glossy appearance to lips.
9. 4.Olive oil
• Olive oil is cracked ,dry , chapped lips are regular part of life
for many people , especially during dry weather. .
• Olive oil might make you think more of pizza and roasted
garlic than a lip balm , but it’s an excellent moisturizer and is a
popular ingredient in many skin conditioning product.
10. 5.Castor oil
• Castor oil is commonly added to shampoo , moisturizer ,
lipstick , the Balm Dotcom , you name it –to provide gental
hydration without adverse reaction.
• In pure , bottle form it’s thick , cough syrup-like , and perfect
to smear on lips and cuticles as an all-natural solution for
anything chapped.
11. 6.Vanilla essence
• Vanilla is a flavoring derived from orchids of the genus Vanilla
, primarily form the Mexican species , flat – leaved vanilla
(V.planifolia).
• Pollination is required to get the vanilla fruit from which the
flavoring is derived.
12. 7.Rose essence
• Rose oil is the essential oil extracted from the petals of various
types of rose.
• Rose ottos are extracted through steam distillation, while rose
absolute are obtained through solvent extraction, the absolute
being used more commonly in perfumery.
• Beta-damascene’s presence & quantity is considered as the
marker for the quality of rose oil.
13. 8.Lemon juice
• Soft & pink lips are something we all desire. Not only does it
improve your appearance, but also is a sign that your lips are
health.
• Chapped or dark pigmented lips are a concern to many, but
with simple remedies, you can easily lighten your lips, make
them soft and pinky.

15. Formulation of lipstick
• The herbal lipstick was formulated as per general method of
lipstick formulation.
• In this formulation, white bees wax, butter, coconut oil, olive
oil, were melted in porcelain dish on water bath with
decreasing order of their melting point.
• Edible colouring matter like beetroot juice mixed with Castor
oil and heated.
• Both phases were mixed at same temperature. Vanilla & rose
essence and lemon juice were added at 35°C.
16. • Then mixture was poured into lipstick mould in excess amount
and mould was kept on ice bath.
• After solidification surplus amount was scrapped with blade.
Lipsticks were removed from mould and flamed.
• Prepared Lipsticks were fitted in Lipstick container and used
for further evaluation.
• Composition and importance of different ingredients used for
preparation of herbal lipstick is shown in Table 1.
17. EVALUATION TEST FOR
HARBAL LIPSTICK
1. Colour and Texture –
• Formulated lipsticks were checked for colour, glossy and
smooth texture.
2. PH-
• The pH of formulated herbal lipsticks was determined
using digital pH meter.
18. 3. Determination of Melting Point-
• Determination of melting point is an important
parameter for lipstick formulation; as it is an indication of
the limit of safe storage. The melting point of formulated
lipstick was determined by capillary tube method.
4. Skin irritation test-
• The formulated lipstick was applied to skin for 10 min
and tested for irritation of the skin.
5. Perfume stability study-
• The prepared herbal lipstick was tested for 30days, to
record fragrance.
19. 6. Solubility test-
• The formulated lipstick was dissolved various type of
solvents and determined its solubility like acetone.
7. Stability study-
• Performed to evaluate the spread ability and organoleptic
properties like (colour, odour and appearance) are studied for
30 days. Formulation was stored at room temperature for 48
hours. According to the study parameters were checked at 3, 5,
7, 15 and 30 days.
8. Determination of spread ability-
• It was tested repeatedly by applying the formulated lipstick
over a glass slide to observe the uniformity of the formulation
and observe whether there is and sticky fragment, deformation
or broke during applications.
20. 9. Softing point test-
• Lipstick should be able to withstand range of conditions to
which it will be subjected in the customer’s bag. It should be
resistant to varying temperature conditions and be just as easy
to apply in hot and as cold in weather.

22. Result
• Herbal ingredients are used for formulation of herbal lipstick
that containing colouring agents which are natural colorants
obtained from beetroot juice . Lipstick have been evaluated
for different evaluation parameters. After evaluation of it was
found that the herbal lipstick of both formulations of beetroot
juice were found to be safe and effective in desired properties.
Hence from present investigation it was concluded that this
formulated herbal lipstick having minimal and no side effects
and thus showing maximum local effect on lips.
23. Summary and conclusion
• The benefits of Herbal based cosmetics are their nontoxic
nature. It nourishes the lip skin. This lipstick supplies vital
nourishment to the lip. It helps in the elimination of wrinkles,
cracking, dryness and folds on lips. Lipstick exfoliates little
and provides a soothing, calming and cooling effect on the lip.
They restore the natural shine of lip in the optimum time
period. Frequent Uses of natural lip improve lip texture and
Attractive colour. Pollution and harshclimates badly affect the
lip and these effects can be countered by the regular usage
ofHerbal lipstick.
