BOOKS AND JOURNALS TOGETHER AT LAST
History of WSUP Journals program
 2011 Journals expansion program
 From 6 to 11 Journals in a very short time
 Increased staff from part-time person to 2 full-time staff, including Journals
Manager and Journals Marketing positions established in 2012 and 2014
Collaboration is key
 Where is the crossover in content with books and journals? Finding similar
audiences is important.
 Subject areas
 Fairy Tales, Film, Jewish Studies
 Some that just don’t fit (MPQ, Human Biology)
 Where to include journals with things books marketing already does?
 Conferences, advertising, mailings
 Crossover with authors, editors, contributors (customer service is important overall)
Examples of collaboration
 Fairy Tale Review
 Exists as annual journal but we made available as ebooks
 Challenges of having to convert files from journal format to
book format
 ISBN vs ISSN challenges
 Different data required and issues of whose content does it
become? Issues of ownership/process.
Was it successful?
 Still to be determined, playing with pricing model and outreach
Examples of collaboration
 Conferences
 Sharing travel, exhibit spaces, conference advertising
 Books sends monthly report for upcoming conferences,
events to Journals
 Advertising
 Books has a budget for advertising and can help Journals
where it makes sense, slipping in a Journals ad with books if
there is a shared audience
 Joint advertising to defray costs
Social Media presence
 Journals is currently incorporated in the
overall Press social media outreach
 Journals inclusion in monthly e-newsletter
 In the future Journals may find a need to
create independent social media
platforms, but for now it’s a way to
continue to share resources and promote
content to a joint audience
Internship programs
 Journals and Books shares interns and intern
spaces. Many of our responsibilities for
interns cross over and we can share resources
this way.
 Internship Workshops
 Conducted by Journals staff for book
interns
Other ways to collaborate…
 Other ways to include Journals
 Front lobby display case
 Window clings on building
 Bigger presence in seasonal/subject
catalogs and mailings
 Other ways to include Books
 JSTOR online advertising
 Advertising Books in journal issues
 Journals sends books team upcoming
TOCs so Books might try to
find/match content with upcoming
events, other books, etc.
We’re done!
Any questions?
