Baseball trading cards first emerged in cigarette packages shortly after the National Baseball League was founded in 1876. Many new tobacco users, especially young people, were influenced to use tobacco after seeing their favorite players chewing and spitting tobacco on the field. Over 500,000 kids between ages 12-17 try smokeless tobacco for the first time each year in the United States.
