CONTEXT
The TV market is at a crossroad with stagnating unit volume sales, commoditization and looming extended excess capacity. All
translate into shrinking profitability while the industry remains extremely capex intensive.
The industry therefore is striving to develop new features to trigger a replacement cycle and compel consumers to upgrade their
TVs with newer and more expensive models. Individual players are all striving to differentiate.
LCD technologies dominate with close to 99% of the market by volume in 2018. However, an unprecedented number of new
display technologies are emerging, all credible potential candidates to deliver those new, high added value features and steal the
crown for the next generation of TV display technology.

A FLAT TV MARKET
The TV market
has been
essentially flat
since the end of
the cathode ray
tube replacement
cycle at the
beginning of the
decade.
• The TV market has been essentially flat since the end of the cathode ray tube replacement cycle. The industry faces
lower margins and slower growth. It needs ways to compel consumers to upgrade often fairly-recent flat panel TVs
and spend more on newer models.
• Through the past decade, a variety of design and technological improvements have been introduced. While some have
allowed TV makers to combat price erosion, none were disruptive enough to trigger a major replacement cycle akin
to the transition from CRT to flat panel. The industry must therefore keep developing more new and compelling
features.

CHINA SUBSIDIES
In China, local governments are granting generous subsidies to
panel makers. New fabs are often JVs between panel makers
and local governments. Access to capital is relatively easy via
local banks and financial institutions.
Ultimately, Chinese firms’ own funds invested in new fabs is
typically in the XX% range of the total fab cost. Additional
subsidies in the shape of free land, infrastructure and tax
holidays can further ease the financial pressure.
As a result, China has rapidly grown from the status of minor
player to being the dominant region in terms of production
capacity. The investments are more recent and geared toward
larger Gen. 8+ and 10.5 fabs better suited for the
manufacturing of 55”, 65” and 75” panels.
With China now a dominant player and the market heading
toward an extended period of oversupply, we anticipate
subsidies to be more selectively allocated and focused on
highly strategic projects at dominants players.
Projects for Gen 10.5 fabs at the tier two players XX and
XXX are on-hold or cancelled for failing to obtain funding.
Both, however, recently XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
Generous
government
subsidies have
helped Chinese
companies
become
dominant
players and
provide them a
significant
depreciation
cost advantage.
But we expect
subsidies to
slow down.

LCD AND OLED
White light from a LED backlight unit (BLU) enters a matrix of
independently controlled light valves (LC cell) which block or let the light
go through patterned R,G,B color filters which create the individual
colored subpixels.
OLED delivers
superior black
levels, viewing
angles and
response time
while LCD wins
for peak
brightness and
cost.
The WOLED architecture uses white OLED emitters combined with color
filters to create the R,G,B individual subpixels.

QD materials QD film
BLU, panel makers, and
OEMs [1]IP
[1] In most cases, OEMs purchase LCD panels and backlight units (BLU) from separate vendors (“open cell model”). QD film suppliers typically sell to the BLU maker. But some panel
makers assemble their own BLU and sell the complete panel (LCD cell + BLU) to the OEM.This vertically integrated model is more common in Korea and at certainTV makers likeTCL

ASSEMBLY
Various equipment companies are working on die bonders with faster throughput in order to reduce assembly costs.
o K&S introduced a MiniLED assembly tool based on Rohinni technology with a throughput of XXX with XX micron
accuracy and XXXX% yields. The company plans to rapidly double the throughput.
o Rohinni and BOE have set up a JV to develop miniLED BLUs for displays 30” and above.
o XXX is working with partners to develop tools with up to 250-300k/hr throughput.
Various other technologies also developed for microLED assembly could trickle down to miniLED (next slide).
Adoption in TV
will initially be
limited to high-
end market.
However as
costs come
down, adoption
could cascade
toward mid
range models.

WHITE OLED
For large panels (TV), LG Display uses architecture licensed
from Kodak in 2009, where yellow/green, blue and red are
stacked to realize a white source.
The white light then goes through R,G,B color filters (CF) to
produce the individual subpixel.
LG Display developed special architectures to compensate for
the lower brightness related to the color filters:
o XXXXX
o XXXXX
This multi-stack architecture increases the number of layers to
more than XX, making the panels expensive to manufacture.

Panels
• XXX, XXX and XXX are all developing solution-based OLED materials. In April 2019,XXX sold the activity to XXX.
• XXX is the dominant player in small molecule phosphorescent yellow, green and red OLED emitter materials for evaporation-based
processes. It is also developing materials for solution processes. In addition, the company is developing a vapor-based printing process (next
page) in order to enable printing of traditional small molecule materials.
• XXX and XXX are startups developing new generations of high efficiency blue emitters. Initial focus is on evaporation process, but
solution processes are on the roadmaps.

JOLED: FIRST TOVOLUME MANUFACTURING
In July 2014, Investment fund “Innovation Network Corporation of Japan” (INCJ) joined forces with XXX(XX%), XX
(X%) and XXX (X%) to form JOLED. XXX brought its TFT backplane technology and XXX its RGB printing process
and equipment.
In mid XXX, JOLED started seeking $XXXM of additional funding. In XXX, it raised US$XXX from XXX($XXX), XXx
($XX), XXX($XX) and XXX($XX). In XXX, it added $XXXm from XXX, XXX and XXX.
JOLED now has close to XXX employees. The investment will enable setting up a GXXfab (1XX x XX mm2), based on
XXX TFT with a XXk substrate per month capacity, starting production of XX to XX panels by XX [1].
The company is also making its technology available (licensing and equipment) to other display makers for TV
applications, through an agreement with XXX and XXX Finetech Solutions.
Despite significant progress, the company still faces many challenges. It is still $XXX short of its initial XXXfundraising
goal to execute its long-term business plan. Production cost is still high, process and materials immature. We estimate
that initial cost target for its XX panels is in the XX range, at least X times more than LCD.
JOLED is the
first company
to offer
commercial

panels.
[1]The site was sold to investor INCJ for XXX by XXX to reduce its financial burden. INCJ then transferred it to JOLED.

MicroLED DISPLAY ASSEMBLY
Bulk LED epiwafers are processed into an array of micro-LEDs to be picked up and transferred to a receiving substrate,
for integration into a heterogeneously integrated system: the display (which integrates LEDs, transistors, optics, etc.)
The micro-LEDs can be picked up and transferred individually, in groups, or as an entire array of 100,000’s of µLEDs:
MicroLED
chips can be
singulated and
transferred
individually or
as large
monolithic
arrays
Massively parallel transfer (“pick-and-place”) Monolithic integration of µLED array
Individual µLED dies or small chips comprising small amounts of
µLED emitters (<10) are singulated and individually picked up,
transferred, positioned, and assembled on a backplane containing the
pixel-driving circuitry (typically TFT on glass, or a flexible substrate).
The pitch on the display is typically lower than that of the donor
wafer.
Big chips comprising large quantities of µLED emitters
(>10,000’s to millions) are hybridized onto a backplane
(typically Si CMOS). Individual pixels are not physically
singulated. The donor array’s pitch matches the display’s pitch.

  • 5. 5 CONTEXT The TV market is at a crossroad with stagnating unit volume sales, commoditization and looming extended excess capacity. All translate into shrinking profitability while the industry remains extremely capex intensive. The industry therefore is striving to develop new features to trigger a replacement cycle and compel consumers to upgrade their TVs with newer and more expensive models. Individual players are all striving to differentiate. LCD technologies dominate with close to 99% of the market by volume in 2018. • 11. 11 A FLAT TV MARKET The TV market has been essentially flat since the end of the cathode ray tube replacement cycle at the beginning of the decade. • The TV market has been essentially flat since the end of the cathode ray tube replacement cycle. The industry faces lower margins and slower growth. It needs ways to compel consumers to upgrade often fairly-recent flat panel TVs and spend more on newer models. • Through the past decade, a variety of design and technological improvements have been introduced. While some have allowed TV makers to combat price erosion, none were disruptive enough to trigger a major replacement cycle akin to the transition from CRT to flat panel. The industry must therefore keep developing more new and compelling features. • 14. 14 CHINA SUBSIDIES In China, local governments are granting generous subsidies to panel makers. New fabs are often JVs between panel makers and local governments. Access to capital is relatively easy via local banks and financial institutions. Ultimately, Chinese firms’ own funds invested in new fabs is typically in the XX% range of the total fab cost. Additional subsidies in the shape of free land, infrastructure and tax holidays can further ease the financial pressure. As a result, China has rapidly grown from the status of minor player to being the dominant region in terms of production capacity. The investments are more recent and geared toward larger Gen. 8+ and 10.5 fabs better suited for the manufacturing of 55”, 65” and 75” panels. With China now a dominant player and the market heading toward an extended period of oversupply, we anticipate subsidies to be more selectively allocated and focused on highly strategic projects at dominants players. Projects for Gen 10.5 fabs at the tier two players XX and XXX are on-hold or cancelled for failing to obtain funding. Both, however, recently XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Generous government subsidies have helped Chinese companies become dominant players and provide them a significant depreciation cost advantage. But we expect subsidies to slow down. • 29. 29 MicroLED DISPLAY ASSEMBLY Bulk LED epiwafers are processed into an array of micro-LEDs to be picked up and transferred to a receiving substrate, for integration into a heterogeneously integrated system: the display (which integrates LEDs, transistors, optics, etc.) The micro-LEDs can be picked up and transferred individually, in groups, or as an entire array of 100,000’s of µLEDs: MicroLED chips can be singulated and transferred individually or as large monolithic arrays Massively parallel transfer (“pick-and-place”) Monolithic integration of µLED array Individual µLED dies or small chips comprising small amounts of µLED emitters (<10) are singulated and individually picked up, transferred, positioned, and assembled on a backplane containing the pixel-driving circuitry (typically TFT on glass, or a flexible substrate). The pitch on the display is typically lower than that of the donor wafer. Big chips comprising large quantities of µLED emitters (>10,000’s to millions) are hybridized onto a backplane (typically Si CMOS). Individual pixels are not physically singulated. The donor array’s pitch matches the display’s pitch.
