4. Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each
SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help you in
guiding the learners.
8. What’s New
Look at the artwork below. Can you see the difference? Can you identify
which one is done by hand and which one is done using a computer software?
Do you see the elements and principles of art applied in both artworks?
Whether an artwork is done by hand or using a computer, the elements and
principles of art are applied.
What is It
Elements of Art
When a piece of art is created, you see the different elements of art applied.
You see different colors of various tones applied. Different shapes are used to
form an object. These elements are applied even when using new technologies.
Colors and Tones
Colors make a drawing or painting attractive and beautiful. But using a single
color may not be very pleasing.
Blending several colors to form a new color makes the artwork more attractive.

9. Blending colors may be done manually. There are also computer programs
that allow you to blend color easily.
Shapes
If you look around, many objects are formed from different shapes. Even those
that you think have no regular shapes are formed from a shape. New artists
learn how to draw by using shapes first.
Look at the figures below.
Whenever you create a design, all the elements and principles of art are
applied. Whether you do it manually or with help of a computer program, the
elements and principles are applied.
