Exponential data growth in data centers will propel silicon photonics to take off into other applications, like lidar. Big data is getting bigger by the second. Transporting this level of data around with existing technologies will soon reach power consumption, density and weight limits. Photons will continue to replace electrons throughout networks, including in the data center, in the rack and very soon on the board. Silicon photonics is an exciting technology mixing optics, CMOS technology and advanced packaging. It combines silicon technology’s low cost, higher integration and interconnect density and higher number of embedded functionalities with lower power consumption and better reliability compared to legacy optics. Massive R&D investments have been made in silicon photonics, but today there are still few products on the market. However, this technology has been strongly pushed by large Webcom companies such as Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook, with investments that will overtake the traditional service providers’ investments in a few years. These Webcom players are targeting $1/Gb prices and are principals for the development of cost-effective photonics technology for future generations of data centers.

After completing the initial year, I4MS has hosted its first public international event on 18th June in Berlin, in cooperation with the launch of the German manufacturing programme, Autonomik für Industrie 4.0". I4MS has brought together more than 150 professionals from industry and innovation, who have attended to several presentations about what has been achieved by I4MS and further funding opportunities for SMEs and middle size corporates (mid-caps) under the Initiative. The event signified the importance of SMEs in Europes manufacturing industry and their role in the reindustrialisation process for Europe. At a glance: SMEs are providers of around 45% of manufacturing added value and roughly 59% of employment in the manufacturing sector.

Combo sensors continue their growth in a market expected to reach $1.4B in 2019, overcoming discrete sensors. Cellphones and tablets still drive the market but wearables will soon take their place in the landscape. THE ‘BIG 4’ COMPANIES IN INERTIAL MEMS SHARE 75% OF THE MARKET; STMICROELECTRONICS LOST HIGH-END SMARTPHONE SHARE; STRONG CHALLENGES CAME FROM INVENSENSE & BOSCH SENSORTEC WHO WON APPLE’S BUSINESS STMicroelectronics (ST) is still the global leader in the inertial consumer sensor market with 40% market share - InvenSense and Bosch Sensortec (Bosch) hardly compete with it today. InvenSense grew strongly, reaching more than 12%, going ahead of Bosch in the inertial market. The ‘big 4’, including AKM, are preparing for the future, with InvenSense holding an advantage as it seems to be ahead in the competition on 9-axis sensors, which are found in a large numbers of products in development, including Google Glass. Prices are still dropping sharply, with 6-axis IMUs sold to some large volume customers at less than $1 in 2013. To stay in the race, leaders are going to introduce technical innovations: monolithic integration of 6-axis IMUs into 9-axis IMUs, TSVs, chip scale packaging, and active capping. Current challengers and newcomers are eyeing this combo opportunity and expect to take market share, even though the supply chain is consolidating. Kionix, Freescale, Alps Electric, Fairchild, Maxim and more than 10 other companies are targeting this market space, but the leaders are well established and competition is hard. New business models are developing and more fabless companies are likely to be involved in the combo market. Details on newcomer technologies and roadmaps are provided in the report. THE REAL VALUE IS IN SENSOR FUSION, MOVEMENT WITHIN THE VALUE CHAIN IS ESSENTIAL Value is moving to function delivery with embedded sensor fusion. Recent acquisition of companies like Movea, Wifislam or CSR is proof of high interest in sensor fusion and also the ‘internet of things’ trend. A lot of actors are considering fusion sensors as a way to make sensors smart, because competition isn’t on performance any more, but in functions/applications. Companies need to add value to their sensors with software solutions. There has been hype about this for many years, but now we’re starting to see commercial implementation. The first real products with sensor fusion are already on the market, such as sensor hubs in the latest smartphones and tablets from Samsung and more recently from Apple, with the M8 processor in the iPhone 6 & 6 Plus. In addition, GPS chipsets with indoor navigation capability relying on MEMS sensors are now available from CSR, Qualcomm and Broadcom.

Beyond all of the hype and tumult, market drivers and technological developments are converging to ensure a bright future for Si photonics. THOUGH THE SI PHOTONICS MARKET HAS JUST KICKED OFF, VOLUME PRODUCTION IS ALREADY CLOSE Big data is getting bigger by the second, and transporting it with existing technologies will push the limits of power consumption, density and weight. Yole Développement analysts are convinced that photons will replace electrons, and that Si photonics will be the mid-term platform to assist this transition. Si photonics offers the advantages of silicon technology: low cost, higher integration, more embedded functionalities and higher interconnect density. It also provides two other key advantages: 1. Low power consumption: particularly when compared to copper-based solutions, which are expensive and require high electrical consumption. 2. Reliability: especially important for data centers, where a typical rack server’s lifespan is two years before replacement. Back in 2006, VOA were the market’s first Si photonics products. Today, there are still a few Si photonics products on the market (i.e. VOA, AOC and transceivers from Luxtera, Kotura/Mellanox and Cisco/Lightwire) but big companies (i.e. Intel, HP and IBM) are close to realizing silicon photonics products. Yole Développement also sees big OEMs such as Facebook, Google and Amazon developing their own optical data center technology in partnership with chip firms (such as Facebook with Intel). In this report Yole Développement shows that, in the short-term, silicon photonics will be the platform solution for future high-power, high-bandwidth data centers. Silicon photonics chips will be deployed in high-speed signal transmission systems, which greatly exceed copper cabling’s capabilities, i.e. for data centers and high-performance computing (HPC). As silicon photonics evolves and chips become more sophisticated, we expect the technology to be used more often in processing tasks such as interconnecting multiple cores within processor chips to boost access to shared cache and busses. Analysts also analyzed silicon photonics’ chances of being used for telecom, consumer, medical and biosensors applications, compared with competing technologies.
