What is a Critical Essay? This type of essay begins with an introduction section that includes a thesis—the main argument or point you want to make. The next several paragraphs consist of the main body of the essay—your reaction to the main points or arguments concerning your thesis, and support for your response to these arguments. Simply put, critical thinking is sound thinking. Critical thinkers work to delve beneath the surface of sweeping generalizations, biases, clichés, and other quick observations that characterize ineffective thinking. They are willing to consider points of view different from their own, seek and study evidence and example, root out sloppy and illogical argument, discern fact from opinion, embrace reason over emotion or preference, and change their minds when confronted with compelling reasons to do so. In sum, critical thinkers are flexible thinkers equipped to become active and effective spouses, parents, friends, consumers, employees, citizens, and leaders. Every area of life, in other words, can be positively affected by strong critical thinking. Released in January 2011, an important study by Richard Arum of college students over four years concluded that by graduation “large numbers [of American undergraduates] didn’t learn the critical thinking, complex reasoning and written communication skills that are widely assumed to be at the core of a college education” (Rimer, 2011, para. 1). Kaplan University designs curriculum, creates support programs, and hires faculty to help ensure you won’t be one of the “36 percent [showing] no significant gains in . . . ‘higher order’ thinking skills” (Study, 2011, para. 4). This boredom is spreading even to what was once called the underdeveloped world. The riots and suicides at Foxconn are just the tip of the iceberg. Nobody much likes to do this sort of work if there's any option. In the overdeveloped world, work is only one of the ways of creating a value chain and extracting a profit. The more advanced form of spectacular economy extracts value from play. Through observations of 7 parks, plazas, and markets in 4 North American cities, and surveys of wireless Internet users in those sites, we explore how this new technology is related to processes of social interaction, privatism, and democratic engagement. Findings reveal that Internet use within public spaces affords interactions with existing acquaintances that are more diverse than those associated with mobile phone use.
