2 Xavier Saints: Celebrating 20 Years of God’s Grace!
As a parent of four gradu-
ates and outgoing Founda-
tion Board Chairperson, it
has been a true blessing to
watch Xavier grow over the
last 20 years. Back in the
1980’s, seeds were planted to
merge Regis and LaSalle into
one unified, strong Catholic
high school for the Cedar
Rapids community. Financial
and spiritual commitment
from the community along
with courage and effort from
a group of forward-thinking individuals helped bridge the
two high schools into one unified entity called Xavier High
School. Since that time, Xavier has graduated thousands of
young adults and established itself as one of the premier high
schools in the state and the Midwest.
This last year, the Foundation and the School Board took
another big step for Xavier in transitioning to a President-
Principal model of governance. With 60-70% of Catholic
high schools nationwide using this model, we embarked on
researching and evaluating the pros and cons. One of the key
advantages in moving to this model was allowing for much
closer alignment between the Foundation and Xavier High
School. In the end, both boards felt this new governance
structure would be best for tackling enrollment issues, diver-
sifying the revenue base and positioning Xavier High School
for the long-term. We are thrilled to be moving forward with
Tom Keating at the helm as our first President and Angela
Olson as our new Principal. Tom’s role is to steer the ship to
ensure the long-term financial viability of Xavier and ensure
our core, Catholic mission is embedded into each and every
fabric of the school. Angela’s role is to lead a talented, faith
filled staff to deliver a rigorous academic curriculum and offer
a broad set of extracurricular activities to develop the total
person in a Catholic environment. Two clear roles with specific
objectives to help keep Xavier strong for the next generations.
As a Catholic school, Xavier has the unique luxury of instilling
all school programs and activities with the teachings of Jesus
Christ and his love for us. His love shines through in the many
graduates from our 20 year history as they become hardwork-
ing community and parish members/leaders. His love also
shines through in the many donors and friends who have so
generously given to Xavier over the past 20 years. We are
truly blessed to have a wonderful Christ-centered school with
so many generous and caring supporters.

We are pleased to present to
you the Xavier Foundation’s
2018 Annual Report. Our 20th
year brought many changes,
both in the Foundation and the
High School. These changes
involved new personnel in the
Foundation, Director Mary Har-
ken completing her first year
and Elizabeth Wright beginning
her work as Donor Relations
and Appeal Coordinator. Also,
Xavier High School moved to
a President-Principal model of
governance, one that the majority of Catholic High Schools in
the U.S. utilize. I feel blessed to serve as Xavier’s first presi-
dent and equally blessed that Angela Olson was selected to
serve as Xavier’s third principal.
Both the Foundation and High School enjoyed another suc-
cessful year thanks to the efforts of so many. We thank our
pastors and our parishes for their commitment to Catholic
education. We thank our Foundation and School Board
members who help set the direction for us. We thank our
faculty and staff for their tireless work to “develop the total
person in a Catholic environment.” We thank the families of
our “Saints” for their belief in the mission and the support
they offer. We thank our wonderful volunteers who assist us
through our Foundation (Parish Appeal, Business Appeal,
Alumni Appeal, Dancing With the Saints), our Booster Club,
Xavier Parents for Xcellence and the many, many team and
activity parent rep programs. And we thank our wonder-
fully generous benefactors who support us financially so that
we can continue to offer a quality Catholic education to our
young people.

A Season of Giving Thanks for our Gifts!

On August 7, the Xavier Foundation hosted its 27th annual
Donor Appreciation Reception with the theme of “Celebrat-
ing 20 Years of God’s Grace.” We welcomed members of
the Foundation’s various giving societies: Heritage Society,
Endowed Scholarship Circle, Archbishop’s Circle, Corner-
stone Society, and School Tuition Organization donors.
Guests were treated to a reception and program in the
Regis-LaSalle Theatre.
A special “thank you” to Archbishop Jackels for joining us
for this very special event. Archbishop Jackels offered a
prayer and remarks about the beautiful work of our Catholic
schools in forming our young people. Xavier Foundation
Board Chair, David Schimberg (R91), opened the program
by offering a message of sincere gratitude for supporters,
noting that their support is important not only for current
students, but also for the many future Saints who hope to
one day walk Xavier’s halls. Xavier High School President,
Tom Keating, offered his thanks, noting that making the
dream that is our school become a reality (and keeping the
dream alive) is possible through the support of our gener-
ous donors. The evening closed with a powerful address
from Xavier faculty member, Jaclyn Richmond, who chron-
icled the impact of the Xavier community on her family,
mentioning that Xavier’s existence far exceeds its monetary
value when it’s filled with students ... and each dollar gener-
ously donated to Xavier is worth more than its value when
it’s washed over those students in the form of an excellent
Catholic education.
Thank you to all who attended this event. We offer special
thanks to Xavier art teacher, Jess Budde, who painted a por-
trait (start to finish - pictured left) of St. Francis Xavier during
the event; recent XHS graduate, Tristen Perreault (X18), who
served as our guest piano player; and XHS principal/resi-
dent artisan cake baker, Angela Olson, who made a special
cake and crafted over 200 cupcakes for the event.
We have been truly blessed with God’s grace over the past
20 years. We are ever grateful for the continued generosity
of all who believe in our mission.

What’s New at Xavier High School
1. President-Principal Model
The President-Principal Model, a model adopted by many Catholic high schools across the
country, was instituted this past July at Xavier. Longtime principal, Tom Keating, assumed
the mantle of our school’s president following a search by a joint executive committee of
Xavier High School and Xavier Foundation board members. In this model, the president
serves as the executive officer of the Xavier High School Board of Education and Xavier
Foundation Board. The president will have the ability
to fully address the wide variety of areas essential to
Xavier’s long term success. These areas include lead-
ing our Catholic mission, student success, visioning,
long-range planning, financial management, public
relations and marketing, and development. A search
to fill the vacated principal position yielded the hiring
of Xavier associate principal, Angela Olson, to serve
as the school’s third principal and first female princi-
pal in Xavier’s 20-year history. Congratulations Tom
and Angela!
The 2018-2019 school year represents an opportunity to look
back at how far Xavier has come since opening its doors to
students in 1998, but it also marks the beginning of a new
chapter as we look forward to our next 20 years. As the
world around us continues to change more rapidly with each
passing day, the need for excellent Catholic education can-
not be understated. Xavier remains committed to its mission
of developing the total person in a Catholic environment. ‘
The school also works to cultivate the gifts and talents of its
students so they may take those gifts and serve as the light
of Christ for others. Xavier not only challenges its students
to become better versions of themselves, but also seeks to
continually improve as a school to better serve its students
and ensure the long-term viability of a first-class Catholic
education option for all in our community. This commitment
to improvement has yielded several significant changes this
school year:

2. Block Scheduling
Up until this school year, Xavier operated on a daily
eight-period modular schedule whereby students
would attend eight classes throughout the course of a
normal school day. After much research by administra-
tors, faculty members, and students, a decision was
made to adopt block scheduling with the 2018-2019
school year. This schedule features four “blocks” or
classes throughout a school day. School days oscillate
between “A” days and “B” days with four respective
blocks. Block scheduling also allows for students to
better engage with course content, presents a greater
opportunity for students to obtain in-class help from
teachers, and reduces the stress on students as it
relates to homework and day-to-day activities. The
longer class periods enable Xavier to better incor-
porate project-based learning and officially launch
Engineering courses with Iowa Project Lead the Way.
A typical school day features an “Xcel Hour” which
give students an opportunity to seek further help from
teachers, work on homework/projects, or attend mass.
3. XCEED Conference
XCEED (Xavier Catholic Extraordinary Encounter Day)
is a new school-wide conference for Grades 9-12.
The conference, held on September 26, provided all
Xavier students the opportunity to hear from keynote
speaker, Matt Fradd (above left), attend breakout
“impact” sessions and end the day celebrating mass
as a Xavier community. This conference allowed stu-
dents the opportunity to choose the topics related to
the Catholic faith they would like to hear more about.
XCEED also featured parent sessions focusing on
“parenting the high school Catholic student.” Outside
guest speakers consisted of Fr. Thom Hennen (St. Am-
brose University), Anne Scherrman (X15), Mitch Fick
(X05), Zach Gignac (X09), Chris Mautino, Tony Lavora-
ta, Charity Hansel, and Sue May. Faculty/staff present-
ers included Andy Umthun, Tracie Marshall (X02), Dr.
Jason Reed, Kellie Wagner, Jess Budde, Jaclyn and
Mark Richmond, Erica Ireland, Mike Goldsmith, Jenny
(Murtha) (X11) and Andy Augustine, Stacy Mickelson,
and Tom Keating. XCEED was conceptualized and
implemented by XHS Campus Ministry.
“XPLORE XAVIER”
& ITS ROOTS
Visit the new interactive touch screen near the Schubert
Commons at Xavier to “xplore” our history. The display
features sections about: Faith (alumni pursuing religious
vocations), Academics (academic award winners), Athletics
(state champion teams/individuals, all-state student-athletes
& school records), Fine Arts, Alumni Hall of Fame, History,
Clubs & more!

Dancing with the Saints
Season 4
Dancing with the Saints, now heading into its fourth season,
features ten Xavier community stars who pair up with local dance
professionals to compete for your vote via an online donation. All
voting donations go to support a specific need/project at Xavier
High School.
Dancing with the Saints culminates with a high-energy live event
in which our stars and their dance pros perform in front of nearly
1,000 attendees who are treated to a full sensory experience of
dinner, dancing, music, lights, fellowship and fun. We invite you to
plan to vote for our stars AND save the date for our live event on
January 19, 2019. You won’t want to miss it!
This year’s proceeds from Dancing With The Saints will be used
to supplement our tuition assistance program and to enhance
Xavier teacher and staff compensation.

2018 Parish Appeal
Approaches Goal

More than 2,000 parishioners from our 11 area church-
es have come together to kick-start our 2018 Parish
Appeal, Celebrating 20 Years of God’s grace through
Catholic education at Xavier High School. We are
excited to announce that we are close to the finish line
– more than 90 percent to our goal of $525,000! Thank
you for your prayers, gifts, time, talent, and for the
extra work to keep the momentum flowing.
We still need your support to reach our goal – please
