2,100 youth and young adults become daily

3. Why is smoking harmful to

 General Health :
• More than 16 million people
already have at least one
disease from smoking.
• 8.6 million people live with a
serious illness caused by
smoking.
• On average, smokers die 13 to
14 years earlier than
nonsmokers.

4.  Respiratory Health:
• Nearly 9 out of 10 lung cancers are caused by smoking.
Smokers today are much more likely to develop lung
cancer than smokers were in 1964.
• Smoking increases a person’s risk of getting diagnosed
with tuberculosis and dying from it.
• A study suggests that youths who smoke are more prone
to develop asthma.
• Smoking slows down lungs growth in children and teens.

5. Disease causes
 Cancer:
• Smoking causes many other types of cancers. These
include cancers of the throat, mouth, nasal cavity,
esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and
cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.
• If men suffering from prostate cancer smoke, it is
considered to be life threatening to them, may be
more likely to die from the disease than nonsmokers.
 Diabetes:
• Smokers are 30% to 40% more likely to develop type 2
diabetes than nonsmokers.

6.  Fertility:
• 18 million males over age 20 suffer from erectile
dysfunction (ED). Smoking is a cause of ED, as
cigarette smoke alters blood flow necessary for
an erection.
 Heart Diseases:
• Tobacco smoking increases the levels of
triglycerides and clotting factors and reduces the
levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)
cholesterol in the blood, leading to coronary
heart diseases, stroke, cerebrovascular diseases
and atherosclerotic peripheral vascular diseases.

7.  Lung Cancer:
• It is the leading cause of lung cancer. Smoking accounts for
about 80% cases of lung cancer. In addition, smoking also
increases the risk of cancer of other body organs like mouth,
esophagus, pancreas, stomach, kidneys, bladder and cervix.

8. Passive smoking
• Passive smoking means breathing in other
people's tobacco smoke. Second-hand smoke is
a danger to everyone, but children, pregnant
women and the partners of people who smoke
are most vulnerable. Passive smoking increases
the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS
or cot death), middle ear disease, asthma,
respiratory illnesses, lung cancer and coronary
heart disease.
• Second-hand smoke is a common indoor
pollutant in the home, making passive smoking a
serious health risk for both those who smoke
and those who do not. Children are particularly
at risk of serious health effects from second-
hand smoke.

9. Prevention and control measures
• Eliminate as much stress as possible. Stress
makes a smoker run to a cigarette.
• Try alternative methods. Chewing gum helps
you get through the craving, sucking on a
mint also helps.
• Drink plenty of fluids. Keep a glass of water
or juice by you and sip it steadily. Try
different flavors.
• Try to avoid the shop you usually buy
cigarettes. Try doing something totally
different.
