The document discusses whistleblowing or blowing the whistle, which refers to informing superiors about malpractices or wrongdoings in the workplace in order to protect the general public, colleagues, and contractors. Whistleblowers can report concerns confidentially and will not face penalties for informing management. Malpractices can include improper, illegal, negligent, or dangerous behaviors. Employees should report issues to their direct manager or a more senior manager if their own manager is involved. Whistleblowers must make disclosures in good faith and reasonably believe the information is true and being reported to the appropriate person. Managers must take all reports seriously, investigate malpractices, provide progress updates, and implement necessary actions.

What is ‘whistleblowing’? Most people will have heard of 'whistleblowing' from the high-profile cases reported in the media. Following the recent economic crisis there have been numerous examples of whistleblowing in the financial and banking sector. Put at its simplest, whistleblowing occurs when an employee or worker provides certain types of information, usually to the employer or a regulator, which has come to their attention through work. The whistleblower is usually not directly, personally affected by the danger or illegality, although they may be. Whistleblowing is therefore ‘making a disclosure in the public interest’ and occurs when a worker raises a concern about danger or illegality that affects others, for example members of the public.
