2. Lyrics
Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
When routine bites hard,
And ambitions are low,
And resentment rides high,
But emotions won't grow,
And we're changing our ways,
Taking different roads.
Then love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Why is the bedroom so cold?
You've turned away on your side.
Is my timing that flawed?
Our respect runs so dry.
Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through our lives.
But love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
You cry out in your sleep,
All my failings exposed.
And there's a taste in my mouth,
As desperation takes hold.
Just that something so good
Just can't function no more.
But love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
3. Initial ideas
Joy Division are a post-punk band from the mid
70s. The song is about falling out of love so it has a
quite dark, gritty side to it and being Joy Division it
is quite a slow paced song with dreary vocals. Due
to the nature of the song I want the whole video
to be in black and white to represent the dullness
of the song. The pace of the video and the length
of the takes will be quite long, this will match the
vocals with the occasional cut on the beat which is
a little faster. I want to use locations that are built
up with a lot of greys, like concrete, as the song
isn’t about happiness and colour, it fits with a
darker setting. I want the video to be a concept as
I don’t want to have any performance in it and
there isn’t really any story to my video idea either.
4. Concept
The video will be a concept video as there isn’t going
to be any performance, due to the actual music
video being performance so it doesn’t look too
similar, and there isn’t really a narrative to the video
either. The video will be similar to a ‘day in the life
of’ video where it will just be following what is going
on in a typical day, this idea came to me because of
what the song inspires me to do. The video will
include a time-lapse of the journey to the place
where me and the people in the video will be going
as well as clips of what the actors would be getting
up to in a typical day, to help the continuity of the
video the main actors will be required to wear the
same outfit on each day we shoot.
5. Location ideas
Outskirts of city centre: The picture
to the right is one of my possible
locations, I will use the footage from
this location in either the choruses,
instrumentals or both. I think that
with all of the colour in the area,
once in black and white there will be
a large range of different shades
which will be aesthetically pleasing
in the video
Thorpe Marriott: This is where the
video will start, on this path, from
that it will go on to the stairs in the
other photo, the camera will follow
the actor as he goes along the path
and up the stairs.
Eaton skate park: This is another one
of my main locations, here is where I
will get clips for verses. The greyness
of the area will work really well with
the style of the song.
6. Representation
The representation of skaters is usually a bad one, they’re often represented by society as wasters, not doing
anything with their lives, criminals and disrespectful, however this is usually the complete opposite of the
truth, with the nature of this song I will show skaters with an atypical representation to how they’re portrayed
by society. The song, which is about falling in and out of love, isn’t something that would be associated with
skateboarding, however the upbeat tempo of the song and the fast pace of the drums and bass can be related
to skating in a sense. The song meaning and the instrumentals doesn’t fit together as it is a sad song however
you don’t easily pick up on this due to the uplifting tune, similar to skating it has a lot more to it than what can
be seen, or in the case of music heard, to most skaters it is more than a hobby, it is their way of escaping
reality, when you’re on your board you feel different to how you do in day to day life, whether someone is
escaping their 9 - 5 job, family, or their mental health, I want to try and represent the happiness in skating
while still showing that there is an underlaying darkness to it which isn’t visible to a bypasser thinking “what a
waste of time”, or “that person is going nowhere” as it is a lot deeper than just what can be seen.
